    Nice video Mark, and nice job showcasing the Tandem Island capabilities. What app were you using to capture apparent wind direction and boat speed? Love how you were able to super-impose that info on the video.

    Hi Thomas the flex mast is a big problem with jibs but because spinnaker are used down wind the flex in the mast doesn’t matter. My brother has got a jib on his Ti he filled the mast with foam to stop the flex but we haven’t tried it out yet . Mark

  • @thomasglenz9137
    @thomasglenz9137 7 месяцев назад

    Mark, I've tried a furling jib twice now, once with the Hobie mast spinnaker top and the second time a pipe cross where the forward pipe attached to the jib and the sides attached to shrouds that went to the ama's. The problem that I kept having was the flexibility of the mast and the aka's. In light winds the jib worked fine In heavy winds the jib would just shake like crazy because I couldn't get the forestay tight enough and it would actually slow the boat down. Do you experience this?

    A few years ago, I did something similar with the spinnaker on my Hobie AI: ruclips.net/video/7I6PNaX_ze0/видео.html However, I've since found it much more useful to fly a furling jib, rather than the spinnaker. I find that downwind, the jib is almost as effective as the spinnaker, and at every other point of sail, the jib wins, hands down. Here is a video of my jib setup (this video shows an aluminum mast for the jib, which I've since replaced with carbon fiber): ruclips.net/video/rwNUI6AXudo/видео.html IMHO, there are a few keys to making a jib work on an AI or TI: 1) An aluminum or carbon fiber mast is necessary for the jib. A lot of people try using a wire or flexible mast (e.g., PVC pipe), and in my experience, those give very poor results, as they cannot hold the required sail shape 2) A custom bowsprit is needed. This is used to put the jib at enough of an angle to generate some lift; otherwise the jib will tend to push the nose down, and you will not gain much speed, while putting a lot of extra strain in the boat 3) I'd strongly recommend getting a quality continuous furler (Ronstan makes a good small one that is not too outrageously expensive) 4) A custom mast topper is absolutely essential (mine is made from PVC pipe, so it does not need to be anything expensive)

  • @markstamp872
    @markstamp872 Год назад

    I have an older Hobie AI, and I've added a furling jib (and have also experimented with a furling spinnaker, like yours). Under optimal conditions, I can do a steady 8 mph and max out at about 10 mph, but it's a white knuckle experience at those speeds. Anyways, great video!

    Well done. Had a spinnaker for my TI but sold it with the boat. Now without a spinnaker with my new TI. Always found the batten was getting messed up with the back stay. Hobie now has an extension for the mast topper but figure it still would interfere. I see what you did by cutting the battan. Did the cut in the batten impact sailing performance? Would appreciate links to the torsion rope and continuous reefer parts. Thanks.

    • @sailingmark51
      @sailingmark51 Год назад

      Hi John for a jib to work upwind you need to have the forstay tight enough mast is to flexible and centre board to far back. Spinnaker/ reacher will work on adventure island hobie make a spinnaker for it .Adding shrouds would have to be attached to mast about 1 metre down from the top of the mast which would stop it from furling hope this helps

  • @Sunshipsailing
    @Sunshipsailing Год назад

    Just wanted to ask....you are not using the Hobie system with a bag on the trampoline but instead a roller furler on the bow. Does this attach to the Hobie mast head swivel and if so is there another swivel at the top. I think this looks like a really good and much less complex system. Also would you dare to use this system upwind or would it put too much strain on the foot of the mast etc. I see you are using it downwind ....is this to be on the safe side and to not stress the mast.
