You're totally right. When I directed anything, I always employ good lighting as part of getting any images to look good. If you want to see more about how good lighting (and lenses) pushed the iPhone even further, you should check out Episodes 23, 24 and 26. We really go nuts and were surprised how well iPhone did with good lighting and lenses - something smartphones 5 years ago would never be capable of. Thanks for the comment!

Great point. I can't wait to try FCCam! But when we did this episode we used rigs from cinema systems we had available. But comments like yours inspired us to try other camera setups that were less expensive - so check out Episodes 23, 24 and 25 and you'll see how we did other tests and explored reduced pricing for the camera setup. Not gonna lie - I'm a fan of Apple, yup. But I've also spent a few years on Android and tried it out and enjoyed many of the features that were exclusive to that OS. We're all fans of something - and my love for Apple only drove me to push it. I didn't go easy on the tech or the results just because I like the products. I feel you. In fact when I directed this, the accessories were what I had available to me with my cinema setups. Hence the over-done rig for this phone. After receiving comments like yours, I decided we should do another test with iPhone and use more off-the-shelf tools and show the cost of the rig. So we did this in Episode 23 and you can see the cost of the camera setup we used to achieve really great results with a talented lighting crew. The results were much better than I ever thought - but you be the judge! Thanks for the comment:)

Thanks for the comment! When I started filmmaking the only cameras available to me was the Panasonic DVX100. 20 years later, iPhone is not only much better, it's much cheaper! My point is that we all have to start somewhere and iPhone is a great place to start. My results here are just an experiment to see what can be done- and I believe the tech I showed here will soon be democratized to help people tell their stories with a bit better quality. But comments like yours are not fully off base - so it inspired us to do some other experiment with iPhone with more available (cheaper) camera equipment. So if you check out Episode 23 you can see a much less expensive approach that gets great results. I still will employ talented lighting people (because every camera needs good lighting) but Ep 23 and 26 have a lot of fun tests that get great results that point to something emerging from Apple that could be game changing for content creators of all levels. I think the analysis is virtually the same - and Resolve has a great solution too. The biggest difference is that as a compositor, After Effects can give more options for the lens effect applied in post. But they're both great options...what I want is this whole process to be about 10x less complex...and maybe someday we can help make that true:) Thanks for the comment!

You can shoot ProRes (RGB, intraframe) without the Cinema Mode enabled. Ironically, if you want the best (cinema) quality, you must avoid using Cinema Mode.

Thanks! The tool is called Blace Plugin. It's in the episode and it can be applied in After Effects to do depth analysis. DaVinci Resolve has a similar tool but I find easier to control depth-of-field blur in After Effects.

I think you're right - and I wanted to do a super deep-dive on tagging. So be sure to check out Episode 28 which is set to release on June 4th.
