A Wonder of WWII - The Advanced Base Sectional Dock (ABSD)
The Historical Society of Santa Rosa kicks off 2024 with another in our series of free webinars, A Wonder of WWII - The Advanced Base Sectional Dock (ABSD) with Andy Werback.
When the US Navy started operations in the South Pacific in 1942, the ship docking facilities were limited to ports in New Zealand, Australia, Pearl Harbor, and a few ports on the west coast of America. This required trips of thousands of miles for servicing or battle damage repairs.
The need for a “portable” floating dry dock resulted in the Advanced Base Sectional Dock (ABSD) - a self-sustaining design that could be built rapidly and deployed to safe areas near the battle zone. This saved many damaged ships and allo...

To be honest, Santa Rosa is a terrible place to live. Crime, sideshows and bad cops. The traffic and parking anywhere in the main city area is pretty bad.

Relatively timely information, lots of incredible knowledge condensed into the presentation. Remarkable. Thank you. I am a model builder and am in the middle of a spat of WWII ship builds. I came across the ABSD-1 model manufactured by Takom in 1/350 scale, same scale I work with ships in, and of course, Advanced Modeler Syndrome (AMS) kicked in immediately due to the obscure nature of the subject. No out of the box build here. I also am planning a trip to the National Archives in College Park to do some research and view the blueprints so again, thanks for the advance work up laying the groundwork for my visit. There are several models, mostly in 1/700 scale - due to the size of the subject, originally all photoetch metal but several plastic kits were recently released in the last few years and of course, the Takom 1/350 kit in plastic (mostly) last year. The kit and base will measure about 12" x 24" when complete. Keep it up, love the video and looking forward to hearing more.

Fascinating history. I've watched the Bennett Valley area grow over the last 40 years, but hopefully not too much. I love the open spaces, the beautiful trees and grasses and wild mustard plants. That's what makes Santa Rosa so desirable along with the best weather in the country.

    1. Not big city 2. Traffic isn't terrible, drivers are 3. Weather is good is you coming from Montana or Buffalo 4. Diversity means White vs Mexicans 5. Not family friend at all, full of weirdos close from children area, marijuana smell all over the city including in children playing area, neighbors don't give a simple hello, bullying with new residents kids at clubs, schools and parks. 6. Restaurants suck, no matter the food is always spicy because the chef is Mexican 7. Cost of living is pathetic, there's nothing except arrogance and entitlement to explain prices 8. Public transportation is worst than Sri Lanka 9. Homeless and drugs everywhere 10. A lot of people drink and drive or smoke pot while driving, even teenagers. 11. Allergies, terrible the entire years. 12. Corruption system between city employees and local parks & structures 13. Scams are constant in any business in the region, many trying to outsmart people with little scams. 14. Pathetic healthcare system 15. Very low level of education and values on public schools. Sonoma County lies between a drug addict metropole with high criminal activity and a drug producing and crime-free county (Humbolt), and has a population who in general seem to live in a river in Egypt.

Interesting stories. I'm always researching old maps and newspaper articles to locate places to go metal detecting. I would love to locate some of the spots that the road houses were on and metal detect the property. It would be exciting to find some relics from those days to donate to a museum.

Serious effort. Many thanks. This man and this video deserve more attention. Hats off to Luther Burbank (1849 - 1926) and George Washington Carver (1864 - 1943)! I suppose that they are among a small number of people who were assets to North America, unlike most of their ancestors ---the Conquistadors and the latecomers.

Santa Rosa historically is a hateful evil place. It is not and has never been this little beautiful wonderful place. This Confederate Sympathizing place was built by Confederate slave owners they killed thousands of the indigenous people and murdered the black slaves that were brought there by evil slave owners. Santa Rosa is still today is haunted by its evil past.

Thanks for creating this amazingly educational history of Santa Rosa’s development. People like me who were raised elsewhere and came here to raise our family really will appreciate it, as we do our city. That Frank Doyle pushed through GGB and SRJC is great to know. I love it here & plan to stay forever. Yes modern blights like crime/homelessness/addiction impact Santa Rosa, but there’s no city in the US without that. I love NoCal and Sonoma County has the best weather, most open space, & friendliest folks I’ve found after trying three others (SF, Alameda & Marin counties).

18:51 - As always, the federal government has been nothing but a parasitical and malignant influence on the state of California, which is why we desperately need to break away at some point and become our own sovereign entity without the federal government and the rest of this crumbling backward country holding us back any longer. We need to be in control of our own future and our own resources without the two being plundered and squandered by the feds.
