Are you thinking of buying a synth, but don't know what to get? Reading a list of specs is informative, but ultimately it's all about how a synth sounds. And so there's RUclips. Too often, you search for a synth, and you get plenty of blips and bloops that are great if you want to make your own sci-fi film. But you're a musician, and you want to know how a synth sounds in a musical context. In my experience, there isn't quite enough of that, and so this is where I'm doing what I can to fill that void. I encourage others to do the same.

Moog MG-1 Demo
Просмотров 23 тыс.10 лет назад
This video demonstrates the sounds and functions of the Realistic Concertmate MG-1. Despite the name, it's a genuine Moog! All sounds (including drums) are from the MG-1 without effects.
Moog Rogue Demo
Просмотров 9 тыс.13 лет назад
The Rogue may be a simple monosynth, but over the years, it was my most inspiring instrument. This quick tutorial shows each of the main functions and how they can be applied musically. The music is original, and every part was played on the Rogue (percussion included). I'd like to point out that while this video demonstrates the Rogue's basic functionality, I've encountered a video that shows ...
ARP Little Brother Demonstration

The ARP Little Brother is a monophonic synthesizer expander that adds an extra oscillator and LFO to any analog synthesizer with compatible control voltage.
Great video, thank you!!!
Great demo! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
stop motion demo
I thought it might be a fun way to demo a synth. Thanks for watching.
At the price of these i am glad i own a bheringer poly d.
Back when I bought this one, it was going for about $500. Not sure what the current price is. I suspect if today's Behringers were around back then, I would have gone with that route. That being said, I'm glad to see that new affordable analogs are on the market. I just got my first Behringer recently. A Cat. Hopefully I'll get off my lazy butt and do a video on it one of these days. Thanks for watching.
@@BlackTomorrowMusic yep i searched for a radio shack moog for years but most were either too broken or priced out of my budget. Restored ones are about 600 plus so when poly d hit it was a no brainer.
is it the original sound? did you add any fxs to this?
This is just the straight synth. No effects were used.
New synth demo! The Korg Minilogue. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/c1m7WdpCwWo/видео.html
I've got a new demo uploaded! The Korg Minilogue. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/c1m7WdpCwWo/видео.html
I've just uploaded a new video! I am demonstrating a Korg Minilogue. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/c1m7WdpCwWo/видео.html
Great job!!!
Thank you!!
Is this metal heart?!?
I had to look up Metal Heart. It seems to use a similar chord progression, but this is based on a song I wrote years ago. Seemed to fit what I was doing. That being said, I discovered a great song because of your comment, so thank you for that.
This is probably the best demo for a synth I've ever seen. Super thorough, great job!!
Thanks! I just uploaded a new one for the Korg Minilogue. Check it out!
2:20 I was reading something with this demo playing in the background and this tone is exactly...identical...to the Hello Kitty keyboard. It's a toy synth for small children and I don't think it's manufactured anymore. It has a Meow tone, but also has bells that are amazing.
I haven't used a Hello Kitty keyboard, but after clicking on your time stamp, I must admit I have absolutely no doubt it would sound like that.
Thanks ..great!!!

Wow. A very detailed breakdown. Thank you for that! I just uploaded a new one for the Korg Minilogue. Check it out!
A lot of people say the Rogue is much better than the Radio Shack badged synth but they're both such fun!
Having had both, I definitely agree. Though I think I like the MG-1 a little more.
This may be the best synth demonstration video ever. You got the visuals spot-on, with immediate examples of how the sound changes as you alter the settings, all set to a catchy little tune that’s perfect for the genre. Two thumbs way up! Thanks for making this video!
Thank you so much!
That was awesome. Thanks.
A non-musician friend picked one of these up from Goodwill for US$15. $200 later it was like new and I was surprised at the depth of sound and variety I could pull from this little gem. It’s easy and fun to play. Thick sound and numerous routing options means I’m still discovering sounds. I’m no Moog expert, not even close, this is my first. I can see how they thought this would appeal to Radio Shacks audience-people who built stuff, who could think linearly and follow currents. Thanks for your clever video outlining some of its features.
That's an amazing find!
sounds like something from the Nintendo system
Great work, thanks for your efforts. I love the MG-1!
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun project.
Hi I wondered whether you could help a fellow MG1 user.... I’m not sure about the Contour section, if I have Sustain set to Out, and Contoured, the Rise Time stops the sound from triggering as soon as I move it away from 0 ..... does your MG1 do that? It doesn’t seem so from your post. Thanks Jon
I'm not entirely sure I'm getting the picture here. But let me see if I can help. So Sustain is set to Out, and your Tone Sources are set to contoured (not keyed or continuous). If you hit a key, then hit another one while the first is still pressed, your note will change (if the contour hasn't already faded out) but the Rise Time will not retrigger until you release all notes. Does this sound about right? This is normal behavior for a Moog. ARP synths do retrigger when hitting a new key, but your MG-1 (or any other classic Moog) will not do this. Let me know if this helps.
Great video. It's obvious you did a ton of work making it. Thanks!
I had a ton of fun making it, too. Thanks for watching
thanks for thedemo, man this synth sounds like something i don't want lol thanks for saving me some time =)
Perhaps not, but I might not have done this synth justice. Watch ruclips.net/video/4Ynv4V09_d0/видео.html before making up your mind permanently about the MG-1. Just a suggestion.
haha this video is awesome, well done!
Thanks!
Excellent video...thank you!!
Is this on band camp/soundcloud? Its really good
Thanks. It's not on anything else at the moment. I recorded it mainly as a demonstration of the MG-1's functionality. But I might add it to SoundCloud at some point. Look up -p Catalano for some of my other material, possibly including this one at a future date.
This demo should win some sort of award.
Awesome! What a demonstration! Simultaneously classic, modern and organized at the same time!
YOU MAKE THE BEST VIDEOS
I got dropped into this video by accident after watching a demo of a crappy old Realistic Concertmate preset drum machine that I used to have. Wonderful demo of the MG-1! I still have mine--and I bought it exactly 30 years ago and would not part with it! I wonder how many people remember that the Radio Shack catalogue in the 80's had Elton John endorsing this product!?! :)
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I remember hearing about Elton John on the advertisement. The VSE forum got into a debate about it once, eventually concluding that he endorsed but didn't actually use one.
Probably true--I don't think I ever saw him using one, but that's often the way with celeb endorsements. His picture with the MG-1 was definitely in the RS catalogue for years though. Funny in retrospect.
Fantastic video
Brilliant demo!
I like the style of your vides a lot. They're fun and informative. I originally found your channel while watching videos of the moog mg-1. I hope you do many more videos like this.
Thanks! I'd love to do more videos like this. I just need to get my hands on some more synths.
THANK YOU so much for this. one of the most, if not the most, informative videos i've seen in a long time.
this is the best instrument/pedal demo I've ever seen. honestly. so tired of DIRK ROCKGUY doing blues scales over experimental ass pedals. YOU AREN'T DIRK ROCKGUY AND THANK YOU FOR THAT. p.s. I got my MG-1 a few months ago and words can't describe how much ground it covers (this video does, though).
So good!!
Holy shit this is the grooviest demo I've ever seen.
When a lesson doesn't FEEL like a lesson. Great demo. Fun.
This video is awesome!
Hilarious, nice demo!
whered the drums come from
Read the description.
Did you play this or sequence it? I'm looking into sequencing mine on stage so I can have free hands.
Matthew Breeden The drums were the only thing that was sequenced. Everything else was played.
Feel like I just watched Gumby
Every demo video should be like this. AWESOME
damn, this song's dope lol
Excellent video, nice job.
Perfect and very informative video!
A song: very interesting/intelligent way to demonstrate the synth. Thanks, mate!
***** Thank you. I think the synth can speak for itself better than I can!
Excellent well presented video...reminds me a bit of the old BBC kids Art programme Vision On at times....very informative too....you must be triggering it with a sequencer though surely.....
This video is PERFECT! Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge in such a fun, concise and thorough video! You rock!
Gaia Lyle Thanks.
