    I have owned a Grainfather brewing system for on 3 years also the conical, a couple of issues the high limit sensor went on mine after 4 brews could not get tech support or help with replacement parts. I removed it and pay attention when brewing problem solved. The other thing I find terribly annoying is the two screens and the silicone gaskets just a nightmare especially the bottom one. The conical is no complaints. If anyone knows were to find a replacement high limit please leave a comment. cheers

      Hi - it's a tap (faucet) adaptor for a hosepipe that is designed for gardening use really and useful if you have mixer taps. This brand is Hoselock (I'm in England). If you look at gardening suppliers you may find it or something similar.

    It seems if you remove the upper cage to use as a randalizer, then the hops would clog the beer tap line. You would have to keep the cage in to contain the upper part of the Hoprocket.

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664 4 года назад

      Aisha King Hi and thanks for watching my video. No I don't think it does work better than a whirlpool. If I want maximum hoppiness in a beer I now use all late hop additions, a big whirlpool/hop stand and then dry hopping. The HopRocket can still be a useful bit of kit in other ways but I now think it's not an improvement on a whirlpool and hop stand in my experience.

    Hello, I don’t know how to connect my Hoprocket to my GF chiller. Can you explain how did you change the hoses ?

  • @MrK-ti5lt
    @MrK-ti5lt 5 лет назад

    Also, you mentioned you were suspending a temp gauge in the beer itself for cold crashing but i noticed you were taping the thermometer to the side of your plastic carboy. Any preference in technique given your experience? I was leaning towards dipping in the solution just to eliminate the guesswork but evidently you've tried both methods and I'm curious about your results. Cheers from FTC Colorado

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664 5 лет назад

      Mr K Hi - putting the probe into the fermentation vessel gives the most accurate temperature. The down side is that it’s hard to get an air tight seal around it so your airlock or blow off tube will still bubble so you can monitor the fermentation rate. Also I often have two fermenters in the same fermentation fridge so monitoring the fridge temperature is all I can do. When cold crashing I don’t need to monitor the bubbling so can suspend the thermometer in the fermenter. Also at first I wanted to be sure I wasn’t freezing the beer! Now I’ve got the hang of cold crashing I don’t bother to put the thermometer right inside the fermenter.

  • @MrK-ti5lt
    @MrK-ti5lt 5 лет назад

    Thanks again for the video. Curious on why you use a blow off tube over a 'traditional' air lock bubbler? Also, as you use a blow off tube now: How do you (or do you need to ) deal with sanitizing the hose? Asking because I've thought about trying this method but it seemed like more work than just dipping my bubbler in the sanitizing solution.

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664 5 лет назад

      Hi thanks for the question. I use a blow of tube for two reasons. First, it can cope with a faster blow off rate than an airlock can - I have had fermentations blow all the liquid out of airlocks if it gets going really fast. Second, a blow off tube with a 90 degree elbow needs a lot less head space than an airlock. This makes it easier to get two fermenters in the fermentation fridge. I don’t routinely sanitise the whole tube I just sanitise the end that goes onto the fermenter. Now and then I’ll sanitise the whole tube by submersing it in sanitiser especially if the yeast has gone crazy and shot down the tube!

      Andy Dunn Thanks for commenting Andy. The Robobrew wasn’t around when I bought my Grainfather but I know some people have them and are happy with them. I think David Heath may have done a comparison? As to what I might buy that’s different the GF sparge water heater wasn’t around when I got my set up so that’d be on my list now. And plastic fermenters will get you started but I’ve now switched to stainless steel for easier cleaning and handling. Not the Grainfather conical though - I got an Anvil fermenter - first batch in it started this week! Happy brewing.

    Thanks for doing these videos Gary! If you get the time, I'd be interested in watching vids on water chemistry adjustments. Between your adjustments for the hard water and your description of using the weights for precision I think it'd be highly educational. Appreciate your work and attention to detail and cheers from Colorado! (Oh, and I agree on the pH meter. You have to keep the tip in a solution at all times and it's really easy to have them dry up if you're not careful. Speaking from experience there, sadly )

    You will be adding a lot of IBUs to your wort because your rocket is pre chilled wort (90c) or so would it not be better to cool your wort down to say fermentation temperatures first ?

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment David. You are right, wort at over 80 degrees could still contribute some IBUs. If I wanted to avoid this I'd chill it down to 80 degrees Celsius or less first, as I do sometimes with a whirlpool for the same reason.

    Very much enjoying your informative vids Gary, i'm a big Landlord fan and would guzzle it daily if the bride would let me get away with it, just wondering how that Landlord clone turned out taste wise in comparison to the original? i've seen a few of your fellow brewers do the TT landlord clone and they have said theirs tasted close to the original...any thoughts...

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664 6 лет назад

      Hi Gary thanks for the feedback. Yes I can get very close to Landlord now after a bit of experimentation. The key is to use Golden Promise malt, the Yorkshire Ale Yeast, and some nice Goldings hops. If I don’t want to buy Golden Promise or want to brew and don’t have any I use a standard malt and add 100g of Aromatic Malt and that is pretty much the same deal in my experience. Landlord fans tend to say my versions ‘tastes like Landlord used to be’ by which they usually mean it’s a bit more characterful/hoppy - but I think that depends on how good the Landlord is that you drink normally!

    • @gazhugs
      @gazhugs 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply bud, appreciate it, i've only tried Landlord out of the bottle and i think its a tremendous ale, lots of flavour and depth also, and according to TT its virtually the same as the recipe from the 1950's which i think is great, like a lot of us i've tried a lot of different brews and nearly always end up a bit disappointed [when compared to Landlord] which is my go to ale tbh, i'd love to try it on cask but no-where for miles sells in in pubs where i live...i'm hoping to get a Grainfather in a couple of months so the landlord clone will hopefully be my xmas ale...all the best to you...

    I've watched several of these Grainfather brewing videos, and one thing I have yet to see is anybody checking and adjusting the pH of the wort at mash time to be between 5.2 and 5.4. I am thinking I would do that before I put the mesh screen on.
