Ranger Craft Mat Alternative for LARGE table. SUPER EASY CLEAN. Save $$. Protect Your Table.
#artmaterial #tablecovers #artroom I’d been looking for the perfect solution to cover my art desk to protect it from all my art materials. But it had to clean back to new each time. I mainly use, acrylic paints, gel mediums, inks, hot glue, baby oil, oil pastels, charcoal … but who knows what’s coming next!
My most important criteria were:
🌟 Easy clean
🌟Clean back to new each time.
🌟Large enough to cover my whole table
🌟Not excessively expensive
🌟A light colour that would look good on my videos
I’m happy to report that I found a solution that cleans like a dream and should be available in any country. Please write in the comments if you have any questions.

    I have used both these products. I definitely prefer to work on the white, but it does crease/wrinkle with very little use, and has developed odd pucker spots, as if it somehow stretched. The brown lasted MUCH longer, stayed smoother and after years (a decade at least) has developed 2 short (less than 2”) cracks along the lines in the fibre. I look forward to seeing the white in use on your desk.

      Hi Fran. Oh wow. Thanks so much for your feedback. It’s great to hear from someone who has field-tested them both over an extended period. So helpful. I have put down a number of lines of double sided tape to firmly adhere the white covering to my table. So it will be interesting to see if that helps with the puckering you experienced. That’s brilliant to hear that the brown covering has lasted you over 10years (and counting). Well worth the price! I could tell that the brown cloth was going to be super robust, but it was just a bit … well… brown! ☹️😆. Thanks again for giving us your first-hand insights. ❤️

    How about using Raisin table top?

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 10 дней назад

      Hello. Do you mean a resin table top? I’ve not tested out resin, but I don’t think it’s a non stick surface. My guess is acrylic paint would be hard to clean off resin. Also, depending on the type of resin it wouldn’t be suitable for hot work. Let us know if you test out a good alternative. Thanks 😊

  • @SharonPerp
    @SharonPerp 12 дней назад

    Thanks for this, nice to see some Ranger alternatives. It looked like you could even make glue gun masks on those, very handy. Although, I think the kind of buckling on the white one would drive me crazy. One thing I was wondering...seems like they would work as paint palettes same as Ranger, but could you possibly make acrylic paint skins on them? That would be fun. Also, if I could get the brown one in a neutral gray, I think I would go for that. Looking forward to seeing how it works for you when you get it. Liked and subbed!

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 10 дней назад

      Hi Sharon. Yes it would be perfect for glue gun masks! The PTFE sheet has arrived and I have installed it on my table. I was worried about the buckling too. But it has actually has gone down pretty smoothly. It will be interesting to see how it wears over time. Definitely you could use it for a paint pallet. Paint skins would definitely come off easy on the brown one. I will have to test out the white one. I’ll make a follow-up video showing the installation (it was very easy). And also seeing how it fares over time. Unfortunately I could only see the PTFE coated glass cloth version in that brown colour. However, I was reading about another company that uses the material outside, for their shade sail cloth. They said that over time it bleaches white in the sun. I think I will test that out with my sample piece. I imagine that the process might take quite some time, but I will report back with those results too. 😉😊

    Could you use a non stick baking mat

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 13 дней назад

      Hi Fran, thanks for your thoughts. I’m not sure if I would find a non stick baking mat to cover my entire table (2m x 0.75m)! And that was the main thing I wanted to do. I am guessing that a non stick baking mat (silicone?) would clean up fine. Also, if you just wanted a smaller surface to work on, then Ranger sell smaller mats in their Inkssentials range. They would work well and are easy to find. (There are also cheaper alternatives on Amazon if you search). But, I was keen to find a solution sold by the metre (or foot) so that I could cover my whole area in one piece. 😊👍

    its a pretty print off the gel plate, im new to this and this is probably a silly question but after you did the first colour and you dried it to keep it on the gel plate, how does the introduction of a 'wet' second colour, white over blue, not smudge and or reactivate the original colour? its fascinating but im confused. thanks for the introduction, the wall print behind you is beautiful

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      Hi Denise, It’s not a silly question! The nature of acrylic paint is that, once it’s fully dry, you cannot reactivate it with water or further acrylic paint. You can’t smudge the paint with your finger, and you won’t smear it by putting another layer of paint on top. People talk about that final layer of paint ‘reactivating’ the dried acrylic layer. I think it’s more accurate to say that the last layer of paint is acting as a glue. In effect, it sticks the image on the gel plate to the paper. Once the ‘glue’ is dry, peeling up the paper should peel the image off the plate too. I hope that helps to clarify? Please comment again if you are still confused. I’m glad you like my Kookaburra collage. Thanks very much. 😍

    Thanks so much for this. I really appreciated the clear explanations around letting the paint dry in between layers. And also now I understand much better how to use the plate! Also I love using a book for the excess paint. I watched your video using the plant as a mask and that was also very helpful.

      Hi Emma. You are so welcome! I’m glad you found them helpful. I find that making sure that the layers are dry is the most reliable method. Also starting with a robust paper, like the printer copier paper. Once you have got a feel for it, you can test out other papers (rice paper, wet strength tissue, deli, etc). They all have their pros and cons and it depends what you want to use your papers for. The book of roll-off sheets is fun. You find all sorts of unusual colour combinations, 😆. Sometimes I stencil or print on top of these too, for my collage stash. 😊

      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      It’s a fun technique. Yes, you can get really inventive with what you use for your final masking layer (the grass seeds). Any spindly weeds will work well. Ferns are good. Leaves you can find. You could even cut a mask shape out of paper and lay that on. And sometimes my house plants are kind enough to donate a frond or two! I hope you give it a go. 😊

    Fantastic, so much easier to understand watching you. I have never let a layer dry out on the gel plate, so ai am going to give it a try. I live in Hawai’i so it tends to be hot and dry, or wet and cold as I live at 2,300’ elevation. I will see…

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      Hi Pricille. So glad you came and watched. Yes, in Perth we have hot and dry too. It can be a problem! Mainly because that first layer dries on the plate before you get your plants down and do the first paint removal. You have to get everything lined up and work quick. It’s the same with that final pick up layer. You don’t want it too thick. But it needs to be a fully wet layer when you put your final paper down. Otherwise it won’t collect all the layers off the plate. (Think of it as gluing the dried image onto the paper). If you find you have problems with everything drying too quick, then you could try Golden Open Paints which have a slower drying time. Or I read that some people add a drop of retarder or glazing medium to slow down the drying time. I’d love to see your results. Tag me if you post in our group, so I don’t miss it! Have fun. 🤩

    Astonishing! Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻 I don’t have a gel plate yet but watching this (after seeing your FB post) certainly inspires me!! I’ve only seen a couple of videos so far - this one and one by Lavinia using ink from pads I think - but the finished results are just stunning. Thanks v much for the video. Feedback - as you ask - sometimes voice is bit muffled. You could zoom out slightly to show entire plate. Name the products you’re using…brand etc (not just colours) and where you can purchase them..? Qs - could you do this on to card rather than thin paper if you wanted to make a card with it? What sort of card? Is there a difference between the two brayers? So even if you dry the paint, when you put another layer over the top, it reactivates it?? Is that just with acrylic paint or also with water reactive ?

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      Hi Gill! I’m glad you are inspired. Gel printing is great fun (and a little bit addictive - beware 😆). The paint I was using is acrylic paint. There really is too much to say in a comment here. People find out what they love over time. However, in summary, really, you can use any! I mainly use Golden Fluid Acrylics. It’s a professional artists paint and is beautiful to use with lovely bright colours and great lightfastness for my collage work. But it a bit pricey. I also use Amsterdam standard, and Liquitex Basics especially for demos. The Amsterdam and Liquitex are both a good medium budget ranges. Lots of people use them with great results on the gel plate. But if you have already got acrylic paints then try them out first. You can buy all of them online or in art shops. Yes you can print on card or paper. A smooth surface will pick up the most detail. People often print on Bristol Card if they are making prints for framing. A good card weight might be 250 - 300 gsm. Really it’s personal preference on the quality of paper you want to get. Also some people print on paper then mount their favourites on ready made cards. You’ll find that not all prints come out as you want, so that process allows you to select the best for mounting. Stay tuned and I post a more of a beginners tutorial with some of this information included. Sorry that the sound wasn’t 100%. I may need to invest in a better mic. You should definitely give gel printing a go! 😊

    • @AmberBennisonArt

      Oh - and no difference between the brayers. 6” soft rubber brayer is good to start. Speedball brand is great but you can find cheaper. Two brayers are ideal - one for warm colours and one for cool colours. 👍

I especially love you showing how you matched up the different colored prints on the dress to continue the pattern in places, such a great idea and it looks beautiful. I do agree with the earlier comment about eliminating the blow drying by either muting and doing a voice over or fast forward or cut it out all together. Not a huge deal, it just will keep the viewer more engaged, I muted the video when you were blow drying since it does bother me. Hello, thanks for your thoughtful feedback. Appreciated. Yes, point taken on the hair dryer. I will fix that in the future. 👍 I’m glad that you liked my pattern matching. Heheh - sometimes it’s fun to indulge a love of detail! 🤭. With regards to my collage technique, yes, I do paint the image first, and then I collage on top of it. I intend to teach my process in the future,, so please do join my newsletter above, if you are interested in staying in touch. I hope you give the printing ideas a go. Thanks again. 😊

    I really love that your video wasn't too long winded and waffley ! I don't watch anything longer than 20 minutes these days as I just don't have the time (or attention span !) . The Audio could be sharper but it wasn't awful.... I have subscribed x

      Hi Claire. I really appreciate your feedback. I agree with you about the length of videos! 🤭. I was conscious to edit out most of the waffle 😆 so I’m glad that it seemed an ok balance. Hmmm - not sure how to improve the sound. I will have to look into that. Maybe a separate mic is required. 🤔. Lovely to have you as a subscriber. I’m always happy to take feedback so we can make this channel great over time. Happy printing! 😍

    Are you using the same piece of paper for each lift? It isn’t clear in the video.

    • @AmberBennisonArt
      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      Hi Annie, I’m glad you asked for clarification. So the papers I use at around the 3:31 and 4:02 time stamps, are NOT part of the final gel print. They are separate papers. Their purpose is to remove the paint around the seed head so that the image stands out and the final paint layer can show through. You can remove more or less of this background paint, depending on the look you want in your final print. Whatever paint is left on the plate at this stage, will be the top layer of the final print. If you look closely, you will see that I removed most of the paint from the top centre, but left more down the bottom of the print. This gave the colour graduation in the final print. When I lifted the seed heads up you can see that the paint trapped underneath is the image of the grasses. (This is called a ‘ghost print’). Once this is dry I put on the final paint layer which will become the background. I pick up all these layers using a fresh clean sheet of paper. By the way, the sheets I used to remove the paint from around the seed heads are not wasted. I continue to use them in this way. The layers build up and you end up with another interesting paper that you can use as a background or a collage paper. Sorry for such a long answer. you may have been looking for a simple yes/no! 😆. In which case the answer is simply NO! (Heh heh - a bit late if you have already got this far!). Does that help?

    Happy I found your channel, and I just subscribed. I love gelli printing with plant material. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I typically use leaves so I really want to try it with grasses. You got such beautiful results! Thank you for sharing. And I’m looking forward to more of your videos.

      @AmberBennisonArt 2 месяца назад

      Yes, good point. You do have to be careful not to overheat your gel plate, as it might damage it. So the cool setting is best. My hairdryer does not have a cool setting 😬 so I just keep it moving quickly around. Thanks for the pick up. I’ll try to mention that in future videos. 👍
