Concert Fashion: Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Cowboy Hats, Battle Jackets, & More
Просмотров 35721 день назад
If you’ve ever dressed as a musician to see them in concert, dutifully sewn metal band patches onto a "battle jacket," or decorated a cowboy hat to wear to a show, you’ll feel personally seen by this episode. This week, we discuss modern trends in concert fashion and how the threads we choose to brandish can display our fandom. Through the lens of pop and metal culture, we converse about early ...
Wellness Eras in Pop Music: Lorde, Ariana Grande, Kacey Musgraves, & More

BLINK THREE TIMES WHEN YOU FEEL IT KICKING IN... This week, we come to the consensus that the pop girlies are entering their ‘wellness eras.’ Gone are the hedonistic exploits and glamor of their prime; and welcome the newly-reformed, stripped-back songstress, complete with a bare face, neutral clothing, and an aura of calmness that looks too good to be true. Looking towards Kacey Musgraves’ Dee...
Will Artificial Intelligence Kill Art?

Tierney has called this emergency meeting to address the pervasiveness of AI. We discuss the ways that AI is affecting kids’ development, our perceptions of ourselves, aesthetically, and the potential removal of our autonomy. With the prevalence of AI-generated music, images, and artificial conversations online, we’re forced to ask: Is there an ‘end-goal’ for this technology? Or, are STEM bros ...
Rockstar Girlfriend Part 2
Просмотров 6744 месяца назад
In part two of our Rockstar Girlfriend series, we branch off from “I’m with the Band” and discuss the groupies that followed: the hair metal girlies of the 80s, the it-girls of the 2000s, the MySpace scene queens, & more. We question where & why the downfall of groupie-dom occurred, and how the modern-day iterations of the so-called “Rockstar Girlfriend” aesthetic may or may not suffice. Links:...

Loved the stroll down memory lane. I wonder how we'll look back on this era.
So fun and entertaining to listen to!
lorde will ALWAYS get the last laugh!!
This was so much fun to watch, you guys are all so articulate and interesting! Loved the point about how going to concerts is a ritual that goes far beyond the one night/artist themselves. I immediately thought of when I went to eras with 6 friends and we all bought tickets together, planned outfits, went out to eat, and got ready together. I made so many bracelets to trade, for a couple of weeks I would do 2 or 3 every night before bed like a prayer lol. I also felt like over half of the experience of the night was watching the crowd and feeling the joy in the stadium.
Live music can be such a special way for people to connect🫶
As an Ohio girlie, I def had to get the camo Midwest Princess hat <3 loved this convo!
i remember exactly where i was when i listened to solar power. its truly some of her best and most introspective writing. hold no grudge is in my opinion, her best track lyrically
solar power is a masterpiece. kisses from brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷❤️
Tomorrow never came appreciation!!
…you could also say LOUD 🌺, PRISM 💎 & Lover 💖 are wellness albums after highly publicized eras with Rated R, Teenage Dream & Reputation
I was waiting for an entire analysis on Endless Summer Vacation since this was Miley repeaking for a third time in her career and she basically disappeared. There was a lot to discuss about that era. I left disappointed
hello Joanne by queen gaga fits ur definition to a teaa
Solar power didn't deserve the hate it received. Periodt
Radical Optimism is actually neo-psychedelia, electropop, Europop, and dance-pop-- not disco. The reason for the Radical Optimism album cover isn't wellness-related. "Optimism" is essentially being hopeful about the future and "Radical" is synonymous with extreme. So "Radical Optimism" is an extreme hopefulness about the future. With a shark swimming near a calm Dua, Dua is "radically optimistic" that the shark will either not swim towards her, or that the shark will swam past her and not injure/kill her in any way. At least some songs off Radical Optimism are about being radically optimistic towards finding true love-- in Training Season, she says "I hope it hits me like an arrow" and in Houdini, she says, "Maybe you can be the one to stay." I just wanted to touch on this point, since one of the co-hosts wondered why the album cover of Radical Optimism is of Dua with the shark, and there was some wonder about the shattered disco ball in "Dance the Night." "Dance the Night" and Future Nostalgia are definitely disco, and knowing Radical Optimism isn't disco could help support that fan theory of Dua moving away from disco :)
Great point! We talked about this before Radical Optimism was released, so we were really just musing solely based off of the singles. Having now listened to the full album, it's clear that she's moving away from disco.
Just because the song is upbeat, doesn’t mean they’re disco. Houdini and Training Season are far from disco whereas the rest of album is completely laid back chill dream pop, should do more research before making these videos….
U guys should have included love + fear by marina!! She was the blueprint for wellness albums
I kinda hate that the general public and even some fans of these artists (specially female singers) love to see them struggling, having meltdowns, revealing all their hurt, their blood, sweat and tears, their most personal fears and traumas. But as soon as they start singing about feeling better or showing some progress towards happiness they couldn't care less and let the albums flop or not do as great as they should've. That's also why I think Taylor Swift is so commercially successful, in all of her albums she sings about her love struggles, and how her interpersonal relationships are not ideal at all, it's not a coincidence that out of all her recent albums the one that did the worst commercially was the one were she sung about love with a more positive focus: Lover, while all the others, specially since 1989 are really bittersweet or totally sour in regards to love and romance, I guess a majority of the pop music public is subconsciously sadistic and needs the artists to struggle and suffer in order to relate and develop an almost personal relationship with their favorite artists' latest musical project.
One thing about the release date of Solar Power single that has stuck with me through the years, here is my theory, it is a massive coincidence and I think Lorde is too smart of an artist for her to not have dropped Solar Power as a single intentionally the same day the world was experiencing a solar eclipse. This is the Lorde who once ended Liability with the sentence "They're gonna watch me disappear into the sun You're all gonna watch me disappear into the sun" and then her next album is Solar Power, again a nice nod to her previous album.
Agreed- the timing for that single was definitely intentional! Back when she was teasing its release, she said to "look to the natural calendar for clues".
Also no offense but your lying. Many people liked and were calling it her best album.
And by that I mean eternal sunshine
Eternal sunshine was really good
Many critics agreed and it's the second highest rated album of 2024. Cowboy Carter got 8.4/10 while eternal sunshine got 7.2/10. Which is impressive
ok go OFF with ur solar power analysis!!
please please please. In the Houdini video clip, notice how Dua's hair is wet as if it is symbolic to the ocean and bringing a radical sense followed by the dance that she does with her team! Notice the lighting as well, the contrast of light blue and her hair, that also represents the album's color palate!! As well as the leather looks that she is pulling to also make the reference to the shark... Her philosophy for Radical Optimism has always been here...
The algorithm doing its job right! Already suscribed
welcome!! :)
Radical optimism by dua lipa was amazing
Except there wasn't much optimism in it? It was a breakup album full of nostalgic/sad songs, just like Ariana's album. Don't be fooled by the titles, the pop girlies did not take us into a positive ride.
Hi guys. Great conversation. I’m irish. Mullingar rhymes with bull-in-bar! O’Reardon rhymes with O’Weird-in! I loved Paulina’s theory at the end. For info, hozier gives more authentic Celtic vibes for us, rather than feminine vibes. He’s the real deal. I salute you ladies. Well Done.
Thank you!! We were really curious as to how these perceptions of Ireland in American pop culture compare to the reality, so it’s very interesting to hear that about Hozier. Saluting right back to you🫡

Awesome video, I do agree with y'all's point of view, however I'm really excited for the new technological and scientific advancements that ai will bring to the future. This stage of ai is just the beginning and no one can predict the capabilities of ai for the upcoming years, which I find exciting but is also a little scary.

I think this Rockstar Girlfriend is somehow just Kate Moss that was with Johnny Depp in early 90s, but she was a model and made the Heroin look popular. I see that look when you show those pics. Pale skin, dark circles underneath the eyes, emaciated features, androgyny and stringy hair. Any girl i was in school were going for a any kind of fusion, Punk, hippy, leather and 50's bubblegum between that look. It was really identity and so personal. I went from Death and Trash Metal to The Doors and then Grunge. Not that much thought. I see PJ Harvey, Björk and Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill had so much influence, at the time. The meaning of a groupie is somehow more like a Gold-digger or Some girls that go between bands or circles, sleeps with some of them like that's the currency. That is not true, but that is the image that pops up in my mind. That's how they were talked about and commonly it was looked down on.
It's weird hearing you talk about this because it mirrors how we see OnlyFans models on podcasts today. It's like they do all those things without knowing the consequences on their self worth and how society is going to view them from there on. There is a difference between being empowered by feminist beliefs and showing the middle finger to any societal norm that people before you did make. And when crossing it, it often leads to downward spiral both in self sabotage and connecting to others .Myself started drinking 10 years old and was a full blown addict before 16 years old. Any cool ideal about rebelling against the elders, slowly turned into a hellish circle of denial, chaos and i felt i was no longer part of society. It's like when teenage girls started to be like Kate Moss in early 90's. That Heroin look. Black under their eyes, so thin and developing Anorexia, looking like Junkies but hairdo like a Rockstar, slim-denims and leather boots/ Dr Martin ,Converse. They did not think about what signals they were projecting because Vogue and Levi's said it was cool. Groupies' were those that slept with the bands that came to town, how i remember them in my past. My best friend at the time, we were 13 years old was dating a guy that was 20 and she had been after him for a year, mostly because he was a songwriter ,played guitar in hard rock band and was always drunk and getting into trouble. It was very common that guys around 20 years old were with 2-15 years old girls and widely accepted, at least in my town growing up. This was early 1991, i'm born 1978.
groupies
I'm enjoying these videos a lot I put them on when I'm cleaning, keep it up!
I was young (early teens) in this era but it was always referred to as a category of hipster
Kyle Dunnigan on YT is excellent at this, he uses filters and has decent writing behind his skits. I love his space trek stuff and his Sly character is awesome 😊
I gotta disagree. New York is also a staple for where "dreams come true," not just LA. Also I would say that she didn't really grow into her fashion... if you read her interviews she says that she has no fashion sense and that she lets her stylist dress her and that her little sister would be appalled if anybody ever gave her credit for her style 😂😂
Neeeeeed more unabashedly girly podcasts
The Strangers is pure nightmare fuel
feeling so validated right now
There is The Shannara Chronicles, The Host and The 100. All 3 were released around the same time as The Maze Runner and Divergent. The Host was Stephenie Meyer's other book. It was about aliens coming to Earth and fusing themselves with humans and humans trying to fight them off. The 100 deals with the end of the world multiple times, time travel, space and kids trying to save humans while they fight among themselves. For The Shannara Chronicles The TV series was based on the 2nd book of The Sword of Shannara. It was set in several hundred years in the future and the humans who were left evolved into 4 different races or stayed human after a war. That show failed because of the views, the series changed producing company between seasons 1 and 2 and no company did not want to take it on after the 2nd season.
