For the price of the Scale Trains locos, I would expect a bit better grag iron mounting, better shell seating without gaps and no paing clogs in the grill work. I would suppose the next level of detail will come with fully sprung trucks, moveable door panels on the hoods, real chain on the front and rear handrails. Sound systems are very good now but could use more bass. Diesel smoke that was black like real diesel would be a breakthrough.

No pal! You are wrong! Any modeller can do whatever they like on their model railroad. It is not up to people like you to tell them they are wrong. There is no such thing as wrong when someone is interrupting how they depict something. Go and count your rivets any way you want but NEVER dictate to other modellers what is wrong or right on their layout.

Nice result! I would have used cheap speckling compound for that tho’. The Golden artist products I only use for special projects and especially creating surfaces (road, asphalt, etc) same for that nice Liquitex paint btw. But again, nice video and result. I think that the textbook definition says that "toy trains" are toys, and "model trains" are models, but in polite society, the terms can be used interchangeably. I think of "toy trains" to be Thomas and Brio wooden trains, while "model trains" are what we buy from ScaleTrains, Bachmann, Athearn, Rapido, etc. That said, I also feel a model is just a really finely detailed (and possibly expensive) "toy". I also don't feel that placing arbitrary age limits on anything is the right way to go about it. As a parent, I have a relatively good idea of when my kids can start playing with models. I also know that if they break, it's a learning opportunity to understand how to take care of and fix things. Kids can absolutely play with model trains. Adults can absolutely play with toy trains. Railroading is supposed to be fun, enjoy it!

As a trains person myself, knowing how fragile they are (especially N scale), 100% no they are not for "kids". But there in lays the rub. It's not about what is defined as a toy, it's about what is defined as a kid. Hence your dilemma. Often when [certain people] are mocked/diminished by [certain other people] they will call them a ...... big kid. And what do kids play with? Toys. And because it's an object that you are getting enjoyment out of, as opposed to something social or complex, that idea is further cemented. But here's the funny part..... a responsible child that knows what they're doing ( 8,9,10 etc) can operate model trains without breaking them. And I say that from experience. I ran my trains slow and easy, my father was the speed demon and I hated it LMAO.

9 months later watching this. Great Idea! I had the same thoughts on power, my thought was a push button switch to a relay that would control power. The other add would be a support on the "hanging" side of the gate. Over time and stress of moving it, the hinges will wear and some sag may occur. Preventative engineering.
