In my mind I've always seen him ... 'that' way - If that makes sense? Flawed, as you call it? I think it helped that in my first playthrough I explored everything I could find, including his room, and I picked up on the vibe that he is aware of everything resetting. And then in my mind, I just figured... yeah, it's gotta be damn hard to care if you know it won't matter. If everything dies / vanishes, then what's the point? (That, probably, hope. Edit: welp, you said that yourself, too.) But I've also had more than one collision with depressing thoughts to be sure.

TLDR: Sans is a character with depth. Depending on how you look at it, he could even be considered a hypocrite. But real people are hypocrites. Yes, even you, reading this comment, are a hypocrite in some way. Perhaps a neat freak who calls out their family members every time they leave dirty dishes in the sink, yet, when's the last time you cleaned your own room? People are complex and nuanced, and often think in ways that seemingly contradict eachother in one context to another. And that's what Sans is. He has a core character, but he doesn't completely strictly adhere to it.

Damn, i was just recently reading a really good comic about trying to change fate and going crazy in the process, and i thought, huh, this writer must have watched this video or had the same thought process because they've made sans very interesting here, and i checked who made it, it was you, you made the comic, good job, you did good

Honestly I feel like Sans already knew about the many deaths before the dinner scene (considering the fact that he stalks you), and this was just the rug pull where he finally tells the player "I know what you can do." in a very cheeky, playful manner. It's like creating a surprise for someone, and when you actually pull it off, all these emotions just mix together. Flowey himself states how he had met Sans before, 'causing multiple resets', and the genocide route confirms that Sans's memory goes beyond the save state and actually recognizes how many times he had killed Frisk. This mechanic should also extend to Flowey's save resets cause they're both extremely similar, thereby making Flowey's warning on avoiding Sans basically in vain. Sans already knows about Flowey, he knows Flowey has been talking to Pap, but has lied to not expose himself even further to Flowey out of genuine annoyance of Flowey resetting over and over again. I may be going through head cannon territory at this point, but Sans may not be protecting Frisk from the likes of Undyne or the other monsters, but instead he's protecting him from Flowey. It's the reason why you never meet Flowey until after you defeat Asgore, and the last time you meet him is at the exit of the Ruins, the only other place where Sans cannot enter. It's the reason why Flowey immediately leaves everytime you spot him just off screen, cause Sans is literally watching your screen. Sans does not care about you dying to anyone else, cause you can reset back to a save, Sans is scared of Flowey, and Vis Versa, cause he does not know the full extent of Flowey and/or what he can do to the player.

The real tragedy of Sans is that he's wrong. He thinks the anomaly is one person. Weird Frisk/player distinctions aside--assuming Flowey isn't lying when he brings it up, Flowey is responsible for an unknowable number of reloads and resets before Frisk arrives and at least a few more during his lategame confrontations. If knowing that everything he tried has been erased at least once, and assuming that's at least a part of his depression, I think that might also explain his inaction during the confrontation with Flowey. If he actually starts to have hope, and he thinks Frisk is the only anomalous entity, that hope leads him to a minimal effort--why bother when the kid who, at a minimum, can resurrect themself (and might be some kind of eldritch timeline demolishing god) is right there? They'll handle it.

Found this vid with no context and yet understood nothing but it felt like I understood everything the moment Sans asked who we were. And the following things that happened are so good. Cause it can apply to Frisk as their own person but also a player controlled Frisk. We question what world did they come from and if that world is the reason they are so obsessed with messing around. Trying to just keep a little bit of control they might not have had in their lives. And then for the player, undertale can be an escape for many of us from the harshness of the real world. But after looking at more of the comics themselves it’s such an interesting story in how in one route the player and Frisk learn that they can’t cling to it forever and it’s time for them to move on. Even if their world is scary, they can’t be in denial forever and in probably my favorite part of the comics. SPOILERS BELOW After another talk with Sans at safe space. Sans actually relates to Frisk/player and feels sympathy for them. It is only after this talk and grief opening up from Sans does Frisk get their iconic “eyes constantly closed” look again. No more open red eyes, they simply look in the mirror as the text says “It’s time to let go.” Absolutely incredible writing and I love this take on the “Dust” style of things.

I have to ask, even though it’s off topic and late: what does Chara think about these repeated genocides? As far as I know, you can play two genocides: the first ends with you trading Frisk’s soul to Chara, the second ends with Chara questioning the player’s motives. I don’t know if the game lets you Reset it after that. But after 200 genocides, what do they think? Do they even bother showing up at the end? Did they try to plead with the player to stop once or twice? If the player, at some point, played pacifist would they even bother killing monsterkind as punishment for the player? What would even be the point? It’ll just Reset anyway. I can also see, if Chara’s even awake during Dr. Megalo, them having interest in this timeline because people remember, people are fighting back for once. A challenge and a more fitting punishment for the player’s bull. “Oh, would you look at that. You’ve done this so many times that the characters themselves are sick of the cycle. And you can’t just Reset it away now. There’s finally consequences for all that death. I hope it’s everything you wished for.”

This scene is in the "finale routes", where you choose to save monsters as well, which sans starts to get suspiscious over
