Using Accents in TTRPGs | ProGM Discussion with European Players
Просмотров 425 месяцев назад
Accents can be a fun addition to character design and stepping out of yourself and into a character. Game Masters can use accents to quickly distinguish which NPC is talking without having to narrate every transition. But having watched plenty of talk shows discussing actors with bad accent work, using European accents with a non-American players suddenly makes me feel exposed. My European play...

I'm grateful to have been a part of this past year, and I look forward to a year if improvement! (Hard to improve on perfect gameplay but hey, you know if anyone can do it I'm sure it's you)
Looking forward to another year of Milestone Play!
I looked and hoped for a part 2 but now I wait to see if it’ll come
Thank you for looking and thanks for the nudge! It's been on the To-Do list for a LONG time. This video took a ton of work and I continue shelve the sequel for another time because I know how much more work it will be. But I appreciate it!
Please I know I’m late but please dive more into the rest of this. I would appreciate it !

Hello Joshua. I was sent here by pointy hat. All hail the hat.
Hello! Lovely to have you! Very acute of that lovely headwear :)
2d6 is 21 combinations.
36 because each die has to be counted separately
way to take a simple idea and turn it into something completely unwieldy and crunchy it may as well been written down in long form. if it can't ALL be reduce to two sentences, it's too long to keep track of when multiple things are happening. this needs a complete rework
Defintly need a part 2
That's such an epic idea❤
Thank you! If you end up making some, I would love to see them!
Thank you this helped alot. I reallh want to reyxand make this game work. Im a PR stan since i was 5yo . Ive already created my own power rangers themed team. This did hwlp i only ever played D&D once and trying to learn this has been tough. So thank you agin. How to find ppl to play is the next test. Lol
Awe, thank you! I hope you find players! I have a few in my Discord that I played withfor a oneshot and miniseries but search other comment sections to these kinds of videos and Reddit!
Don’t know why you don't have more subs
Thank you for the kind words! It might be because I don't post regularly, hit the hot topics as the crop up, or do a lot of the other things content creators are supposed to do.
And the suspicious texts lmao
THE TENSION
I think they reprinted the book with edits, I got a physical one recently and it doesn’t have some of the misprints you mentioned. The video is super helpful though, I’m more of a visual and audio learner, so long reading for rulebooks is hard for me.
Awesome, thanks for the heads-up!
I love that you involve your community in your videos! Very enjoyable!!
Well Sir please accept this humble Like for your amazing explanation
Thank you! I'm glad people are finding it helpful!
I really appreciate how you set the stage in this video! That context makes your players opinions shine, and using three perspectives made this shine :) I am very glad for your channel, while I am never a DM, it's an interesting niche topic that you cover and you do it well, making it accessible to a wider variety than just those that DM. Nice work, thanks for the video!!
Thanks! It's something that I had been internally struggling with for the last few years. For home games with friends, things like accents and using European history for worldbuilding is just fun. But when I thrust myself into professional GMing and opened my art up to strangers across the world, a bunch of different things started to feel exposed or vulnerable. This seemed like a good opportunity to address one of them rather than hiding from it.
this is amazing do you have any open campaigns lol
Thanks for the interest! We have a few games looking for players. Some are longer term, story focused narratives, others can be more episodic or challenge focused. I have all of the current stuff listed at milestoneplay.com/lookingforgame After GenCon happens the first week of August I'll also be looking to start up another possible longform campaign. All depends on what you are looking for and what your availability looks like.
@@MilestonePlay nice I did join the discord ^>^
Ah, finally a good explanation that isn't full of snide asides aimed at other systems. Maybe i can actually get people to start playing.
I'm glad you found it then!
I love u
How kind!
Great video! I cant recall if I've fought one of these, have just been in proximity, or am fabricating the entire memory lol
I always thought that the +2 performance would be outside of the five points in social
Based on my understanding, your Essences score will ALWAYS be the total of the skill increases beneath it. With that understanding, the +2 in Performance would sync up with the Social increase option. But I am certainly not an expert in the system, just trying to help my player and then everyone else :)
@@MilestonePlay I can see where you are coming from, my thought was that if, for some reason, you decided not to focus on social for the black ranger. that 2 performance would eat a lot of the points you could put into that.
sweet 🎉thank you
I've seen rules lawyers shut down a game for up to 30ish minutes arguing with the DM about something. I've never seen it done benevolently. It's people who want to get an edge, trying to find any means to do so.
☮
This is great perspective, and is a wonderful tool to help empower the players narratively at the same time as being mechanically fair. Literally win-win. I'll be checking this channel for more wisdom in the future.
Thank you for the kind comment! I've got a whole playlist of GM Diaries that are all about the muddied-waters of applied GM advice and GM moments rather than the pristine, theorycraft of great GMing!
I no longer run any D&D, but back when I did I used to be open to creative use of game mechanics. Since I never understood my position as the one running the game to be adversarial to the players, but as cooperative. Well, that is why I moved even further to narrative focused games, and design my own system to work without the need for a game master. And advantage or the like is not needed since I discarded the notion of rolling for competency or to check for capabilities of the character altogether. My system is about who the characters are and not so much what they can do.
The rules provide a framework for modeling combat dynamics in a fantasy setting, and your initial mistake was deciding that the mechanic (sneak attack bonus from an adjacent ally) could only be explained in one way. The mechanics are an abstract model, so try asking the player to narrate how they are getting their bonus within the fiction. Your second is in assuming that “your job is the story.” Your job is to handle the mechanical elements of the game, and provide challenges for the players to overcome as they live out the story. Leave it up to them to describe how and why their abilities work in the world, and both sides of the table will be happier.
Thank you so much!! I sent this to my players before our 0 Session. I think I'm going to allow a few changes and implement some house rules to allow more customized charcter creation. I fell like they were trying to pigeon hole the players into the og team. I have my complaints but it will still be fun
Thanks for reaching out and letting me know the video will be useful! And yeah, most problems with the system can be hand-waived away with house rules.
Even though I concur on the premise that too often newer GMs have not enough steps in their adventure, I would say that all the suggestions miss a crucial element. it just blows up the scope but adds no depth to it, thus I would say to make all the added stuff, the foils, the obstacle, the thematic factions, they all need to tie into an underlying meaning -- a leitmotif. Without that you just added garbage to get through, but if there is a through-line that transforms the conflicts into something more than just conflict for the sake of it, then the larger scope will translate into a more memorable fiction.
Somehow missed this one; glad I came back to watch it! I feel like this topic is the interpersonal/IRL version of the "my precious world" problem. Always appreciate your insight :)
Experience for gold, treasure and defeated monsters!
Story is in my opinion something that is emergent in the roleplay hobby and not being told. My approach is that I provide the payers with a thematic framework and then let them play in a character driven manner, exploring the theme how they see fit.
A very "present tense" story that can only be seen in hindsight afterwards (please correct me if I am wrong).
I thought this said "fonts". Still watched it though.
That would be a super niche video! Thanks for the view despite the disappointment :)
This game is fun but I had to wing a few things for the first session
That actually defines most of my experience with the game.
top notch roleplay ideas
Thanks! I shot the whole series over two days and hoped my ramblings made sense to other people!
Holy smokes it’s real
Dodging is a a super underestimated power move, especially on a raging barb if your party makes sure to slap you and keep your rage going.
Thanks for input! I have also seen a wizard Dodge with the shield spell as a backup as a one-round tank to buy time for the rest of the party to deal with another situation
I love this. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed it!
I would appreciate a part two plz
Thanks! I'm finishing up a mini-campaign of this game next week and then will be looking into what I am comfortable making for a part 2! I want to be as helpful as I can without overstepping my mastery of the system.
I understand what you were doing but the tropes in MMPR means that the leader of the power team would be Red/White/Green. Making it Black Ranger doesn't fit the trope and even your build seems more like the second in command to me.
You are correct! I had an idea that I wanted to play out showing that you could mix some things around to do your own thing as they do switch up the leader color in some later seasons. That said, having played a bit more in preparation for a part 2 video, the game super super wants you to mechanically stick to the MMPR tropes. Red is totally the default leader especially with the group initiative ability. White is a specialy role that you have to upgrade into while green serves more as an add on or solo character.
About to start a PR campaign, in fact having zero session later today. This was eminencely helpful! Thank you very much for making this!
Thanks! I am most of the way through playing a miniseries and when I am done I plan to make Part 2 of this video with more rules and corrections. Check out the other comments for insight from other players with more experience than me! One of thr biggest things I missed that no on has commented on is the fact that there are Med Kits in the Equipment section for healing so it isn't quite as difficult to heal as I made it out to be.
I definitely have a preference for role-play when GMing, especially with social encounters... going so far as to remove Charisma as a stat. Not saying it's for everybody but I'm a rather theatrical GM and I try to bring my NPCs to life, such that it feels icky for me to allow them to be manipulated by the roll of the dice (c.f. the outrage if a GM were to roll a Persuasion check against the PCs and expect them to abide by it). So I asked my players, "Do you want high-rez NPCs or do you want Charisma? Cause, to be fair to myself and the effort I put into prep, I can't let you have both." Now, knowing that not all players are comfortable with heavy role-play, I make some concessions... 1. Players may still use their mental stats to try and get hints. 2. Players may also "slip into exposition" (i.e. I lie to the shopkeeper, telling him that his sister was involved in an accident and urgently needs his help). There were some growing-pains but, after a few sessions, we don't miss CHA at all. That, at least, is what worked at my table! 🙂
I definitely understand the moment of, "I know you rolled high, but I can't abandon who this NPC is." I can see similarities of your comparison but I do think that the general default way of thinking about TTRPG social encounters has the play asymmetric where players are meant to roll against NPCs. A lot of games aren't designed for Players and GMs to truly have symmetric play mechanics. That said, if you have a table that is willing to let go of that mind set, that can be utterly fantastic. As for Slipping Into Exposition, that is another wonderful skill for tables to practice. There is always that weird moment of "Have I narrated too far?". GM's get more practice at it learning how much world action to do in exposition and the line of how close they can get to PCs before it becomes Player territory, but with time and an open table players can also find out how broad of a range is possible with shifting from in-character RP to exposition and back.

Great video! Very insightful
Thanks! I hope I explained what I was going for enough. I had more examples before I turned the camera on but in the middle of recording it felt a bit bogged down.
