How to cold finish #watercolour #ceramic #sculpture painting by Karen Wilde
How I create a cold finish watercolour and white patina effect on my ceramic sculptures.
I use quality acrylics in primary colours, watered down. I layer the colours and sponge off areas.
The final colour is an all over whitewash. This is then sprayed with water to create the dripping white patina effect.
once dried, I apply brown wax polish. I decided to add some gold acrylic highlights afterwards (not shown in video) which catched the sunlight nicely. I then sealed the entire sculpture again in clear beeswax polish.
Hope you liked this tutorial. Experiment with other colours and polish colours. Thanks for watching :)

Love it! Do you mix your own glaze or would you like to share what glazes you used? I’m curious how there are larger/fewer cracks on the “yolk”
I honestly wasn't expecting the big crackles! I usually get very fine crackles but I did overfire this one. I normally fire to 1000.c but this was fired to 1050.c. I used premixed mayco classic crackle in white on all the white parts and clear crackle on the yolk, over a stroke n coat underglaze. Then I paint in Indian ink and wipe/wash off. Best of luck!

Nice..I wanna ask, do you put anything else on top of the acrylic paint, before you applied the shoe polish? Thanks a bunch..im just now going to paint my 1st sculpture :D
Also..what else should I put after the shoe polish? Is it fine on its own as a sealant? I dont wanna get it wrong
Nothing else is applied
My last later is beeswax polish. Some shoe polish might have beeswax already in it, check the labels. I like to add natural beeswax polish as it smells really good!

I wish someone would It’s the length of time to get to certain temperatures. I know every kiln is different but how long should it take to get to ideal temp ?
You just answered your own question.. every kiln is different. I've seen channels where they are heating kiln for hours using crappy weed torch and it never reaches a high enough temp. I can only answer for my well insulated kiln and using a proper forge level torch. I can heat it to 1000.C in 10min however I aim for a slower temp increase of around 30min to prevent thermal shock. My kiln could probably reach temperatures of 1200 if I pushed it longer but I never need to go above 1100 for the type of clay and glazes that I use.
Hi! Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to figure out how to fire rings, but I'm not quite sure yet. 'cause like you said, it's good to clean the little hole, put wax, etc... and a ring should be all glazed. Would you have any suggestions?😅
You could use some wire kiln stilts (as shown in video) and sand off any sharp pinpricks left by the stilts with a fine dremel tool afterwards. I would then simply the seal the sanded areas with a polish of beeswax :)
@@karenwildeartthank you! ❤ I'll give it a try!
Each time we create new jewelleries product where you are hanging those earrings does it need to recreate it again?
I talk about this in the video. I probably get around half dozen firings before I replace the wire/clay but it depends what types of materials you are using.
You Made your own oven?
It's fantastic
Thank you! Made from an old honey drum 🐝
Beautiful and highly creative 👌🏽 😍
What kind of wire do you use and where to get it please
I've answered this a few times already so will put a note in the description.
Hello. I love the result of your patina... Which colours did you use for painting as the base colour. Thank you.
This piece has a burnt umber base with blue tinged white layer over top.
Love this piece. What a great idea that the head is separate ❤
Hi! Thank you for sharing this was so useful. I have made a bowl from a slip with sodium silicate and now i wonder if i should clean it off the bottom like i would with glaze? Like should i avoid sodium silicate on my kiln shelves?:)
I would :)
What kind of wire did you use?
I've already answered this so will put a note in the description
Very useful and easy to make thank you!
With this i might finally be able to create the true colors of the pots i see in my mind, until just now I was filled with such absolute cutting fear and dread towards the unpredictability of the entire glazing process but this might save me yet
Yes it allows you full control over how your pieces look. Have fun!

Piece is bisque fired to 1000.C (see description for full details)
Thanks for sharing your techique! Looks great!
So great to find your video great solution for beads thank you!!
Would you like to see a full painting tutorial? Like and Comment to let me know :)
Очень красиво ❤
I was under the impression that the SS should go under the slip, but now I see it can be used either way.😊
Hello, I love the result but cannot grasp the process… so you have used the lamp shade as a mould but how did you manage to join the two plates without squashing them ? Were they leather hard ? Apologies for the newbie questions !
It was tricky. Not quite leatherhard but getting close. I used slip and score method to pinch the sides together. It would have been easier at leatherhard stage but I wouldn't have been able to pinch the sides closed.
Great pot..
Really unique love it thank you
this is lovely! is there any way to tell when the pot is done? Also, what about temperature? do you have a way to measure temperature?
You could use a handheld laser thermometer but I don't personally check the temperature. Through trial and experiment I've worked out how many hours of wood burning are sufficient to produce the colours. I estimate that my temperature doesn't exceed 800-900.C (I know this because I tried recreating the effects in my gas drum kiln and it got too hot at 1000.C which burned out the colours)
thank you for sharing! i wonder what did you use to stick the pieces of glass to the bisque? :)
I use glaze if I need sticking power (experiment with different glazes as they can change the color of the glass which is cool!) Sometimes I just balance pieces of glass.
amazing! thank you so much very helpful! :) @@karenwildeart
I just love love this❤❤❤
I’ve been trying to figure out how to make ceramic dice , do you have any suggestions on how to fully glaze something like that ( where it can’t really be suspended and ideally would be completely glazed ) ? I’m new to ceramics and don’t know much about it all.
You can use stilts made from clay and kiln wire. They would leave little pin pricks that you might need to sand down. I don't know any other way sorry
I find my kiln is slow to get 1900-2000f …I was wondering if the last couple hundred degrees just took longer to reach?
Sorry for the late reply, I don't always get notifications for some reason. As mentioned in video. I use a venturi burner with a regualator and it has to be open all the way to reach final temp of 1000-1150.Celcius. No I don't have trouble as its very well insulated too. I actually have the opposite problems and it gets hot very fast!
Can you tell me what you are using for the lid and what the temp rating is? I am living in France and would like to try and find it here.
Sorry for the late reply, I don't always get notifications. I am using a ceramic fibre board designed for foundry kiln temperatures. I don't know the max temp. I only go up to 1150.c in this kiln but the board itself could probably withstand up to 1300.c with no issues. Try a kiln repair shop or a metal foundry supplier?
Adorei!!!
Beautiful and super helpful thank you

Brilliant and really interesting
Please read before commenting: it takes a LONG time to create my artwork in between a full-time day job, sometimes I can only release videos in "parts" (this is NOT a tutorial and I'm just sharing some of my processes) - be patient for finished results. Hi! I would love to ask some questions to you. I wonder if I can make a kiln with the tank in parallel ? Because I want to make glass painting art. And round shape doesn’t give me much space. So I wonder if I can make it side way ? Does it give the same effort? thank you
No I don't think it would work as the gas kiln needs a vortex (like a hot tornado) to spread evenly throughout the chamber. This would not happen with a parallel barrel. You would be better off buying an electric kiln for glass art, they come in parallel designs.
I make glass firing kilns with two used electric kilns on their sides. Worked great !!
Love your work, What do you use for your final hard wax finish. I am looking for something non yellowing
www.nativepens.nz/renaissance-wax-200 Something like this would be non-yellowing. I tend to use mainly beeswax that I melt on but yes that would be a bit yellow. Look for crystal clear stone polishes
Karen, I love your work. What is the final clear harder wax that you use for your sculpture. Having a difficult time figuring what to use that will not yellow as I have a very light color sculpture.
Sorry for the late reply (sometimes I don't get comment notification) I have responded below 👇
It’s a great success to me
