Rock fans just don't give a damn
A couple of weeks ago, I posed the question, "Is rock dead?" Based on the feedback here and on other platforms-many of which included recommendations to check out emerging bands-I feel confident in saying that rock is very much alive. However, this leaves me wondering if we’re asking the wrong question. Perhaps the real question isn’t whether rock is dead, but a question we should each ask ourselves. I scratch the surface of the question in this video. #rockmusic #opinion

Is Rock Dead? The full phone call between me and Sass Jordan

Former bassist for Megadeth David Ellefson agrees with Gene Simmons’ statement that “Rock is dead.” But is it really? As I started unpacking what it means to declare rock “dead,” I found myself with more questions than answers. That’s when I realized it was time to Phone-a-Friend. Here is the full un-edited phone call where I explore the topic with songwriter, performer and former Candian Idol ...

This is sad this all happened and I have seen it unfold from day one. LRB is one of my very favorite bands but not the tribute band playing in the states

    Dean, please do not confuse the ORIGNAL lineup and the CLASSIC lineup (24:25). Many of us Australian fans much prefer the work of the ORIGINAL lineup which included Ric Formosa and Roger McLachlan. Not wishing to diss David Briggs at all. He was and is a great Australian guitar player. But Ric Formosa was and is an incredible guitar player. Roger McLachlan was and is every bit as good a bass player as any of the other bassists LRB had. The ARIA Hall of Fame induction was a disgrace because it did not include Ric and Roger who certainly deserved to be included in that group. Without Ric or Roger, I don't think LRB would have achieved the success that it did. Just LISTEN to the band's first album entitled "Little River Band". It is a work of Art. The album version of "It's A Long Way There." is one of the greatest pieces of music that any Australian band has ever released. In the Capitalist dominated world we live in, we have a tendency to focus on success rather than art. And we often, mistakenly assume that if something is commerically successful, then it is automatically a work of art. But deep down, we know that is not always the case. LRB's first album, was new and fresh. It was something different. The albums that followed were deliberately more commercial by design. Some great songs. Some classic songs. But the primary goal was to achieve American success which they duly did. The long term fans of LRB know who the "Real" LRB was. The rest doesn't matter. B,S, and G may have regrets about some of the things that happened. But ultimately, after they are long gone, THEIR music will live on. And THAT IS all that matters. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

      The ARIAs was hardly a disgrace. Roger and Ric were mentioned throughout on numerous occasions, including in Derek’s acceptance speech. How do you suggest the two of them be included? Help is on its way was performed on that night which was originally created by Glenn, Beeb, Derek Graeham, David and George so it makes perfect sense that those six were on stage. The term “classic lineup” is used all the time - not just LRB. Like it or not, the 6 guys inducted on the night were and are the Classic lineup. Ric and Roger went on to build an illustrious CV in the industry and are both well recognised for their incredible contributions.

    Rock is thriving, just not in the US. It has been said many times rock didn't die it moved to Japan, and Korea, and India, and Ukraine, and Mexico. Band-Maid, Nemophila, Hanabie, Lovebites, Asterism, Rolling Quartz, Bloodywood, The Sixsters, Jinjer, and The Warning just to name a few. Fans are just lazy and really they always have been. How many people actively look for new music? In the past most people just listened to the radio and some of those songs meant something to them, the songs that didn't mean anything to anyone faded away.. Every radio station in a market was owned by a different company they had a program director who picked the records that could be played, and some DJ's could pick some song they wanted to play. That is all gone. I disagree on Napster it could have been the greatest distribution model ever. I ran an indie label in the 90's we thought Napster was great. I put not only my label's catalog on Napster but other labels owned by friends as well. So there was legal content on Napster. The majors did not like this new competition, the barrier to listen to a new band was gone.The best feature in Napster was that you saw other people's carefully curated collection of music you would find someone with tastes like your own and find bands you had heard about but never heard or some new bands you never heard of, just download the poorly encoded MP3 and take a listen. I was buying about 8-10 albums a week. The Majors almost collapsed till Steve Jobs convinced them to make easy and convenient for music lovers to buy music on iTunes. Maybe we would be better off if he let them collapse.

    Thank you so much for this untold story. I had always wondered why I haven't heard anything about the original members, and why they weren't touring. I figured that they had lost their voices, like Steve Perry, or suffered some kind of personal loss that kept them from performing. Turns out, they are all fine, still overflowing with talent and skill, and just as fantastic as ever. Like David Bowie or Tony Bennett, age had no ill affect on those awesome, distinctive voices. We've been denied their gifts simply because of ridiculous rules in US copyright law of which they were unaware, and a manager who failed to advise them about the rights to the band name. These gorgeous songs are a treasure of unparalleled worth. I think 2025 is perfect year for a new generation to be I re-introduced to singer/songwriter/musicians of this caliber, and not be forced to listen to mediocre cover band. There are still original musical giants among us! The artists who wrote and recorded that music deserve so much more!

    To me, growing up in the 70s and 80s, saying "let's rock!" was met with cheers while now it's met with "what a lame old man hanging onto to his youth." Rock isn't dead but it's like jazz and the blues. Still around but not the main and driving force in music it once was. Also, I'd say the electric guitar has done just about everything it can do musically. Yes, there was effort to put in for music or any entertainment. Now it comes right to you instantly. Too easy. You don't appreciate it as much. I've listened to new. bands or new stuff from old bands, doesn't get to me like the stuff I loved for years.

You are wrong here I'm afraid. Ok Boomer? BTW Xers are not Boomers. They're the forgotten generation and prefer it that wsy. Thanks for posting this. I did know a little bit about the story, but this filled in a lot. I saw the band as a young teen in 1980. It was actually my first concert with Pure Prairie League opening. I didn't get a chance to see them again until 2000. I didn't know who was in the band in 1980 or in 2000 at the time. I went up to meet the band and pretty sure the only "older" member was Housden. I don't remember Nelson being there. I said that I hadn't seen the band since 1980 and he told me he joined the band in 1981 meaning there were no original members of the 1980 tour. I was pretty disappointed. As more stuff got put on the internet, I learned that the voices of Shorrock Birtles & Goble was the sound that I fell in love with. The current lineup - and the 2000 line up - is just a cover band and is really disappointing that more people don't know that.

  • @travelingguy2988
    @travelingguy2988 Месяц назад

    Thank you, thank you, Dean. If nothing else, the truth is now out there and we've learned the full story. I'm an American and I will NEVER recognize or identify the current "members" as LRB. I fell in love with LRB in the fall of 1976, when I was in college, driving down the road alone with the radio blaring. "It's A Long Way There" played and it was the first time I'd heard it. My immediate reaction was, "Wow, what band is THAT?" Glenn Shorrock's voice had me mesmerized on every song they ever played from that time onward. LRB became my favorite band and I was thrilled to learn they were Australian because I had just returned from a mission trip to New Zealand and had met some Australians there, which was kind of a novel connection for me. My college roommate went to live in Australia for 2 years to do misson work. When he returned, he brought an LP that had "Home on Monday," which I had never heard til then, because it was never released in America, which I found hard to believe. It's now my all-time favorite LRB song. In 1995, I was driving down the road playing the radio and just accidentally heard that LRB was conducting their 20th anniversary tour nearby in Owensboro, KY, and told how to order tickets. I went to the nearest pay phone and immediately ordered 4 so my wife and our 8 and 10-year-old daughters could go. It was an amazing performance that night and fulfilled my lifelong dream of seeing them live. My 2 young daughters absolutely loved it, too. Ironically, Wayne Nelson was part of the group then, as was Peter Beckett, lead singer of Player. So, they also played one of my all-time favorite songs, "Baby, Come Back," that Beckett sang lead on. That night created an indelible memory which I will forever be thankful for. So, with all that connection I have with the original LRB, there is NO WAY I would EVER recognize this current bunch as LRB. Thank you again, Dean, for digging into these details and finding what's real. That research must have taken hundreds and hundreds of hours, not only to discover what happened, but then to put together a clear documentary of it so it's easily understood. You've done all of us loyal fans a great service!

      Note that "It's A Long Way There" was recorded and released by the ORIGINAL lineup of LRB ... NOT the CLASSIC Lineup. Many Australian fans much prefer the original lineup of the band to the classic lineup which had success in North America. The first two albums that LRB released in Australia featured the original lineup which included Ric Formosa (Guitars) and Roger McLachlan (Bass Guitar). Ric is of Italian Heritage and Roger is a Kiwi!

    I fully support what you do here and have enjoyed it, found it informative and interesting. I have seen the childish hate speech everywhere from certain fans of Burton Cummings. It’s sad and has nothing to do with music. If anything, it’s the enemy of music. I just hate that the Peterson/Sharp version of the band has so unfairly had to suffer these childish, hateful attacks. The band followed a natural evolution, over time. As a fan of The Guess Who since the very early 70’s, I was so excited to hear the incredible quality of songwriting and musicianship on display on the albums “The Future Is What It Used To Be” and especially “Plein D’Amour”. Loved the videos, which have now disappeared from RUclips…just what we’re talking about here…those who don’t like something in art demanding that no one else it either. And now the videos are gone. Tearing down someone else’s creative expression to make room for your own hateful expression is a truly horrible thing. And all of this has only made the band legacy a joke. Very wrong…very sad.

  • @michaelskeen7045
    @michaelskeen7045 Месяц назад

    What I’ve found interesting with this issue is how many people who are fans of this band fall into your second category…they only like one version of the band, or in this case, seemingly, one member, and they they will be disrespectful, use various types of hate speech (while usually never making any specific points), AND they expect you to believe as they do….hmmm…kind of sounds somewhat like what Burton Cummings has done for years himself.

  • @michaelskeen7045

    There was never a “fake” Guess Who. Cummings left in ‘75 and the others basically dissolved until regrouping in ‘78 with “Guess Who’s Back”, with Kurt, Donnie, Kale, David Inglis and Vance Masters (the final member of Brother to join the band). They have released new music in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Cummings didn’t like the way Kale registered the trademark…honestly, I thought it was a bit sketchy too…but Cummings is no better. Jack Richardson dissolves Nimbus 9 and Cummings and his lawyer took full control over the song rights to The Guess Who song catalog. This includes, all co-writes and songs the Cummings didn’t even write. But because he did this , he alone has been receiving all of royalties. So, when Lenny Kravits had a hit with “American Woman”, only Cummings got paid. Bachman explained this in detail, as well as his many attempts to get Cummings to do the right thing, but Cummings would never talk about it. Which is why we got “Jukebox” from the pair, instead of an album of new music. Bachman wouldn’t do an album of original songs with Cummings because of what Cummings did with the royalties. I’ve been a Guess Who fan since my first album “American Woman”, but Burton Cummings has taught me to genuinely dislike him to the point that I still can’t listen to the older music. And there’s also the fact that Derek Sharp is a far superior songwriter, arranger, producer…what Cummings did, TRULY destroyed the band’s legacy.

A good start in my opinion would be "The Non-Fiction Days" OMV or "Domination" Official Live Video.

    One of the greatest bands of the 70's and 80's. Their music was a mainstay on all FM stations around the United States back then and even now! The legacy of LRB rests with Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles, and Grahame Goble. The true voices of LRB. It's a shame that greed took the name of their band away. They should sue in an international court for the rights to get that name back!

      John Farnham has just released his Autobiography. In it, he recounts his experience with LRB. And it is a real eye opener. Things were not as they seemed.

    Spider has been blowing the minds of myself and my fellow bassists for years now! The whole band was (is) insanely talented. Being Canadian, I was a massive fan since their beginning tours of Western Canada when they first appeared. Better late than never to this party!🎉

    You don't know what happens behind the camera (social media). It took 17 years to push Arnel out of the band. 17 Years is a long time and dedication to a band!

    I am a huge fan of pink floyd since the beginning. I have all the waters and gilmour solo albums. I have seen pink floyd and Roger waters live. I think this one is rather good (by his standards) and has great songs like black cat, between two points and scattered.
