      @@MyBroSux24 I don't know the history behind it, but my guess is that it's just to make the game last a more reasonable amount of time. Dealer repeats are a feature that most other forms of mahjong do not have and can really extend the the length of the game. Even with experienced players playing quickly, an East-South game can still last over an hour.

    we have a discussion about "should riichi player show his correct tempai in case of abortive draw". What do you think? Some players insist that they should only in case of 4 riichi draw, I think that it will be more correct in case of any type of abortive draw... Proofs from japaneese source will be useful.

    I swear I’ve been put in furiten when I didn’t discard anything I need to win on. (I play Doman Mahjong on FFXIV) I find myself in Furiten a lot! I always see a winning hand and I’m like yessss! But then it’s forcing me to discard something and I realize I’m in furiten somehow

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty 5 месяцев назад

      The likely explanation for that is that you don't have a yaku. Even if you're able to complete a winning hand shape, you still need at least one yaku to actually win the hand. It's easy to miss out on potential yaku when you call for chii or pon, so if you aren't sure, it's better not to steal other players' tiles so that you can declare riichi once you get to tenpai.

    One question I have is this temporary furiten rule you mentioned. If you discard that 8-Sou at around 2 minutes, but you are at let's say 10000 points left, but the other players each are at 20000 points I am at 30000, this means I am not allowed to wait on your 8-Sou in order to hit a wealthier player for the Ron-Cost in order to build up my lead? Whether or not that's strategically viable if there's a Riichi hand going around is questionable in the first place, but I did have one single instance recently where I considered doing it and didn't because I was unsure if I'm allowed to.

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty 7 месяцев назад

      It would depend on where you are seated relative to me. For example, if you were seated across, then no, you cannot pass on that 8sou and then win on another discarded tile that turn. However, temporary furiten is cleared as soon as you take your turn, so you can wait for another round of discards if you want to try to target another player.

      It's not so much intolerance as it is having set expectations based on the setting. If you were to play with seasoned players in a more relaxed setting, then it's no problem not to handle tiles perfectly. But at a serious tournament, fumbling with tiles or breaking established rules/norms could cause issues when it comes to clarity and making sure all of the play is above board.

  • @skeome
    @skeome 10 месяцев назад

    This is very helpful, except that the dead wall is the 14 tiles after the wall break, before the dealt tiles. This is in case the dice roll for breaking the wall ends up being less than 7. From the right, the first 5 tiles are dora indicators. The first one is flipped by default, the other 4 are flipped individually whenever kan is called. If a hand is won after declaring riichi, the top layer of the dead wall is moved and any tile under a flipped dora indicator (hidden dora) is also flipped, allowing for up to 4 extra dora for that hand. The last two stacks of tiles are used to draw/replace a tile whenever kan is called to keep tile count even. Most riichi rules only allow 4 kan calls for that reason. The ones that don't end the round when a 5th kan is called

      I do know about Mahjong Soul, though it was not released at the time I was making this video series. While Mahjong Soul has definitely helped spread riichi mahjong in English-speaking communities, I personally find it hard to recommend due to the gacha mechanics and questionable artwork it features.

    Very helpful video. I made it into adept on Mahjong Soul by total luck apparently, because I've been on a rough patch of dealing in for about a week now.

    As the player going after a person just discarded, how long do you give before drawing and discarding? Do you wait 5 seconds to see if anyone calls or do you just keep going?

      It ultimately depends on the people you play with. Inexperienced players may want more time between turns, but experienced players would probably prefer a fast-paced game. Competition rule sets generally say to wait 1 second before moving to draw to confirm that other players do not call the discarded tile.

    Your hand is closed and you Ron and get 10 points. Is this this 10 points in addition to fu in your concealed hand (i.e. pung or kong of dragons, your wind or table wind), thus making total fu more than 30 points?

      Yes, assuming the hand is not pinfu or chiitoitsu, then other sources of fu will be added causing the total to be above 30.
