It’s a combination of the size of the target and the composition of the material, for example, big silver coins are very conductive and so give a high reading, the same as big copper Victorian pennies or anything bronze.. whereas small pieces of lead or even small thin silver coins would show a lower reading.. different machines have different tone and number systems despite working on the same technological principles, so it can get confusing. Most detectorists will get to know their machine and will generally have a good idea of what the machine is telling them based on the numbers and the sound of the tone.
