Ban the Ban! Balance is the Answer!

In the face of a proposed bans on certain plastics, especially single-use disposable items, I argue that boosting reclamation and reprocessing activities will pay bigger dividends. Through our own consumption behaviour, we can limit plastic use ourselves. A ban is a blunt instrument to try and control a very complex issue. #simcoeplasitcs #goodguyinplastics #protectyourplayground QUESTION - Hav...
Mindful Purchasing

In our highly disposable society, we REALLY need to take a moment when we purchase a product to consider how long it will serve us. Let's refrain from purchasing the "rock bottom" cheap product and consider something that is slightly more expensive that will last much, much longer. Not only is it less expensive in the end for us as consumers, it is kinder to the environment as less resources ar...

In this week's video, I talk about the positive impact that plastics have had in the automotive sector. From weight savings, parts count reduction, safety systems, recyclability, and overall improvement in vehicle longevity and serviceability, plastic in automotive is truly a success story. #simcoeplastics #recycling #protectyourplayground Subscribe to Kurt Stahle - Simcoe Plastics Here: ruclip...

Let's have a conversation about the proliferation of plastic bags. Plastic is easy to work with, inexpensive and durable. It simply dominates. However, that doesn't necessarily imply it is the best overall solution. Subscribe to Kurt Stahle - Simcoe Plastics Here: ruclips.net/channel/UC22S... I take a closer look at why plastics have proliferated the packing of beverages (I'll get to food packaging on the next video). The drive to cost reductions and efficiency of process are the major reasons. But, let's consider the minuses of the alternative - glass. With the larger liveaboard style boats I'd like to see a larger effort made to have them hauled out to dry land to provide alternative living oppertunities for people in village enviroments . Think of the possibilities there could be to save the boats that are actually worth saving .
That’s an excellent idea!
sad it doesnt burn main reason why it replaced asbestos. i bet eventually they will find how to reuse it, as now ship hulls are taking over the world as wood rots, metal rust, but this stays like new . I think bad idea we waste those ships, better choise noiw would be reuse those boats and increase price on newly made boats, this way cheap boats would dissapear from market which would mean less abandoned boats. it would increase prices and increase the need of old boats. Also people who should not buy boats would not buy them. As many times person buys boat and has no money for service it and it ends in landfill. We need something what would make it to reuse on same boats for fixes of damages
Who doesn’t the volume work on this? No it’s not my phone and the volume is up. I watched several videos before clicking on this one
Excellent job here. Great explanation.

Use the grinded fiberglass for home or building insulation.
Pink Box is a great idea. I for one have recycled my empty plastic shampoo and shower gel bottles but there may not be a proper post consumer recycling program for those yet.
If you have ever worked much with cutting or grinding cured fiberglass you'll find out that the energy required to particulate it is extremely high. Probably very carbon negative endeavor.
How do you go about actually grinding the fiberglass hull material down??? Did you do it yourself, or did you hire out for that?
Hi Kurt, thanks for sharing this information. I would like to know if you have an update with the use of recycled fiberglass pieces. I am working on a project with regards to fiberglass boat manufacturing and recycling. thank you
How about reusing it for 'fill" , or a thickening media for epoxy in a boat repair?
So that was 2 years ago... What's news about this please
Not sure if you are active. But through 2020 i have seen term "backyard-compostable" popping up. And so called "plant based" plastics. Do they differ from "common" plastics?
Hello, I am thinking to have a small sauna in the after cabin of my glass fiber sailboat? May this project go well if I investering in a proper isolation? Or is that just an insane idea?
Hello, I am a senior mechanical engineering major working on a capstone design project that requires the grinding of fiberglass. I was wondering what grinding machine you used here?
Good Morning Alice - for our development sample, we used a 20 hp grinder with a 3/8" mech, from Rotogran in Bolton, Ontario. This is essentially a thermoplastic parts grinding machine. It worked perfectly. Good luck with your endevours!
Hi Kurt, I'm Dan and I like where you're going with this and I find it fascinating, considering I was in the thermoplastics industry for a couple of decades. I would very much like to brain-storm together on some ideas we may have to save the planet while opening up a new concept of commerce here in Massachusetts, USA, as well as the rest of the world. Please reach me at djd-df@live.com, thanx.
Hi I work in a fiberglass cia and I ´m interesting for the result of your research did you find a way to recycle fiberglass ? thank
Hi Jorge - we were able to demonstrate that adding recycled fibreglass can improve the characteristics of cement (non-structural applications only). However, the cost of capital equipment involved to shred boats, coupled with the expectation of "free" end product makes the prospect of grinding boats in the private sector almost a non-starter. This needs some government involvement to make happen.
working in the construction trade industries so much plastic, metal screws, chemical adhesives, and packing material is simply thrown out. In the end, I don't even know if recycling some plastic bottles will help the world. And tearing off the paper label too? aint got time for dat sheet
Hi Kurt.... check out this clip. ruclips.net/video/rQE0Qo2Pcc4/видео.html We need to talk Mark
Or boat dock decking.
Joe C - both are excellent ideas! I like the shipping pallets as we could use more if the material. Great feedback, thank you!
How about using The material to make pallets for shipping goods. instead of wood.
Might be a bit heavy ,but maybe good for tiny home base, water proofed rooms - just a couple ideas
Hi Kurt. My name is Victor Padilla and I am an Area Manager for Sakrete/ Oldcastle Products in the greater Western United States. I’m also a Sailor. I’m interested in starting conversations regarding your project and seeing how I can be of service.
Very informative, Kurt. Great job!!
Totally agree, in Australia this is a real problem. Cheap clothing and other household items are killing our planet. Look for quality and longevity.
I have a lead for you. I will call/email it. Requires some discussion.
Well done Kurt!
Nice to see Afternoon Delight in your video. Sad to think she might one day be at the end of her economic life but great to see she could become something new. Great initiative. Now can we figure out what to to with roofing tiles.
Alright Kurt! Thank you for taking us another step closer to a cleaner environment, I think recycling boat hauls vs going to an already overfilled landfill is a great idea!
