FP202 dead stick landing on a hillside field.
Просмотров 1743 месяца назад
Having practiced dead stick landings I was surprised how quickly I lost airspeed in spite of having shoved the stick forward. As I looked at the field to my left I felt the plane mushing and instantly pushed the stick full forward. Immediately I realized how easy it would be to get into a stall spin scenario especially if climbing out. I had leveled out and was cruising. I do forward slips on m...

I went from a 28 HP Rotax 277 with a 60"x28" prop to 38 HP Kawasaki 440 with a 66"x51" prop (14⁰ of pitch). I would barely be able to take off in this heat and humidity with my 277. with the 440 I'm able to climb away 570'/minute.

If you fly without radios, download Gaggle! Reviewing my flights has helped me learn my plane's capabilities and improve my flying skills. And today it warned me to stop climbing, I had a near head on. And I believe Gaggle may show up on adsb as I maintained my altitude but the oncoming plane climbed 300 ft in our seven mile closure rate.

How did you build up for the jury strut attachment points?
@@garyvanmeter4911 I just use multiple thicknesses of table saw leftovers, thin pieces and build them up even with the front side of the spar cap. Each piece is glued on at the opposite angle to the piece below it. I do put a thin strip of commercial white ash on the back side to give some hardness to the web.

Wow!!
Actually most of it is cut off because I saved it wrong so I'm putting another one up saved the way it was recorded.
I’m working on getting mine airworthy, look forward to getting up….
Nice job , good video.
I thought the rib jig was the place to cut the trailing edge off. Once you rip your trailing edge you have your measurement to find the right location ( height) . You don't want it to tall, you want it just right.
How and when you cut the trailing edge is up to you. I was just showing how I do it to get it to the exact length from the spars.
@timketcham9139 I guess what I was getting at was cut your trailing edge First to know where to cut your rib for a sweet fit. Don't ask how I found out.
I was referring to how and when you cut the trailing edge of the rib.
Nice view

Здравствуйте сколько горит пень по времени ?
It burned like a stove for about 3 hours, but continued to burn down for about 8 hours.
What and where were you flying and was this a dead stick intentional or was it due to malfunction?
@@mrtbrocks5664 I fly out of PA01 Linesville PA, I was flying about 20 miles east, over Blooming valley PA, when my engine died. I had just taken off from a friend's field, had leveled and reduced to cruise. About 5200 rpm. About 1 minute later the engine died. I had a 1,000' altitude so, with nothing but forest ahead, it was no problem turning back to a hillside field that I had just passed. The landing was rather typical since I normally come in high and do a spiral forward slip to the end of the runway. But being dead stick I had to be very precise.
@@timketcham9139 Good job! I was at PA01 for the first time last month to a fly-in, with a blue and white Maule. Maybe we met. There was one ultralight airplane pilot I met there on Sunday, his aircraft a light green color. Most pilot-attendees it seemed that weekend were paramotor pilots.

Tim, do you still recommend t88 as a high strength epoxy, when it's crystal clear/new? Or have you switched to a different product altogether?
@@ininkus I do still use it. I have restored planes 34 years old and their T88 bonded joints remain strong. But now I buy the smaller bottles so as not to let it get crystallized. Perhaps I brought my old bottle to my hanger and overnight it chilled. I'm not sure. But their engineers claim that warming it makes it all good... I didn't show that. It was still strong, and I must add that I use commercial white ash and that makes it more difficult to pass a stress test.

Hey the next video you do.Can you do one on waiting balance on the 202 with and without the wings, and do you have to stitch the wings and by chance?Do you know what the Horsepower is?The kawasaki four forty eight p a waiting for reply
@@frankbruns7137 sorry I just saw this. There's no need to do a w/b without the wings. And even doing a weight and balance of the empty plane is kinda fruitless because you only fly with a person in the seat and about 2-5 gallons of gas. I recently did a quick video on doing the w/b on the 202. The adjustment for w/b is simply moving the seat forward or back. I suppose in an extreme situation (1/2 VW with too long a motor mount) you may have to put tail weight on it.
@@frankbruns7137 wow, after looking at my weight and balance quick guide video I found so many errors that I re-edited it. I deleted the old one and uploaded my edited version.
It’s very Barnes Wallace! Looks like a lot of work to build but stronger than the sum of its parts. 👍🏻
watch out for those winds...
Surprised I never encountered a bounce.
Hi. How much last to complete?
I built my FP202 in 1 year 2 months. But that's very quick, especially for a build from Prints. It takes most people several years.
It is always a joy to see people actually built. Thanks for sharing.
I still have no idea what was wrong with it exactly. The rear spar, the angle to it was a 1/4 of an inch back? It was "that direction 1/4 inch"?
If you looked straight onto the front of the leading edge, the root was perfectly straight and square from the main spar to the trailing edge... But the rear spar had slid to the left ¼".
I'm with you. From the video I have no idea which frame is showing what is wrong. Is the rear spar issue north to south, or east to west? I don't understand why the ribs are being cut loose if it is merely slid past the end rib a quarter of an inch. Couldn't the end be trimmed off?
very nice to look at
Nice. I use a thin push stick about a little over an 1/8×1/8 about 30 inches long to push it through without stopping...stopping sometimes causes a rough cut. Also you don't have to reach around. Kind of like you were doing at the end of the video. Thanks for posting!
TIM!!! My Loehle Sport Parasol wing looks very similar, it is almost 30 years old and I am making minor repairs to recover it, but I have issues, I am going to make a video for you to look at and consult on for FREE :) If you will.

Thanks Tim! This is very encouraging. It shows that most things are fixable.
Not building in washout ?
No washout in the FP series
It's really not necessary. The plane doesn't even hardly stall. And when it does descend rapidly, here comes down perfectly even.
I actually can't stall the plane. It will start descending rapidly, 500 ft per minute maybe
Figures 1.5 and 1.6 in AC 43.13-1A says minimum splice ratio is 15:1 for spars. If you don't have this, you can download it for free from the FAA at: www.faa.gov/documentlibrary/media/advisory_circular/ac_43.13-1b_w-chg1.pdf
you dont have to disclaim your are teaching to fly an ultralight, there is no cfi issues, faa does not recognize ul instruction or a ul as an aircraft, they are vehicles
Don't forget white cedar from the east. Or some northern white pine. Ponderosa pine.
It's safe to flex all wood components by flex bending test. Don't get crazy thought. Use your best judgement because you will break some an learn what's up.

On your next video on the 20 two, how long are the winso struck? I got the 202 and i'm looking at a 101 need to find buy how long the stretch are to bite on your next video watching everyday
We are having a blizzard now. As soon as I can get to my hangar I will measure mine. But it won't be exactly the same for you. Unless we built our planes exactly the same, which is not likely. The length will be about 110" or 2,794 mm. (2.794 M) Your actual measurement for your plane is found by attaching the wings, and raising it 4" above level at the wing tip. Then measure the distance.
4" is 101 mm.
Also, there is a Facebook group Fisher Flying Products owners group where you can find lots of information.
