Enjoying Retirement
США
Добавлен 7 мар 2021
After 44 years of service to the Army, I retired in June 2021 and began living for myself and my family. I started this channel as a way to let my dad see some of the things we're doing. Mom and dad are not able to come visit me out east anymore so this is the best way for us to stay connected. But, I'm also trying to make sure that my videos will be of interest to others. I don't think I'm unusual, I think I'm like most guys who want to do something outdoors, do some travel, and keep the mind fresh with creative pursuits.
This isn't a purely fishing channel, or a purely travel channel, or a purely creative channel. I'm breaking the first RUclipsr rule and not targeting a specific niche. I know that means that not everyone will be into everything I post. I hope that's okay with you, if I travel and you're not into travel, then just wait for the fishing ones. If you're not into fishing, then skip them and watch the travel videos.
And in the the end, this is for you dad.

Is snorkelling Junkanoo Beach, Nassau, worth it?
We are going to take a look at Junkanoo Beach, Nassau, The Bahamas and see if it's worth snorkelling. It's 15 minutes on foot from the cruise ship terminal and a free public beach, but is there anything worth seeing. Follow along with us and we spend an hour snorkelling there in Mid December and see for yourself.

I took my first tandem sky dive with Skydive Key West in Sugar Loaf Shores, Florida Keys. Like everyone else I had a few questions before I signed up. I didn't see anyone else addressing them so I thought I would make this video and answer the typical questions someone might have who is considering a tandem skydive. Whether it's Key West or somewhere else I think the information here is appropr...

A fascinating visit with one of my favorite museums about a voyage I read about as a kid over 50 years ago. Kon Tiki. He put his theory to the test in 1947 and after 101 days he had t...

How to cross street in Ho Chi Minh city and live to tell about it
Crossing street in vietnam by foot is quite something. As someone involved in safety and traffic design, its just totally different culture and philosophy from what ive used to - we try to do safe and easily accessible, over there because of the silly number of scooters and motorbikes every place has to be made inaccessible - making it even more difficult for pedestrians. Really weird mix of some great drivers because they do daily somehow survive there ...and then some really irresponsible and drunk (etc) drivers driving absolutely as they please. The traffic accident statistics over there are really sad.
Hi, thanks for watching. Each country and culture has their own unique systems and customs. Just can’t apply ours to theirs or vice versa. All part of the fun of traveling, but crossing the street can be very daunting to the first timer. I’m just trying to prepare folks who are going there and let them know that it is possible, but a completely different approach to what we are used to. Thanks for the comment.
@EnjoyingRetirement certainly. I have extended family in vn, so im simply hoping they will manage to improve traffic safety in general there over time. Being professional in related field, there are just so many safety "things" i have difficult unseeing, as thats what i do for living. Though to be fair, vn isnt unique in this aspect in asia and they indeed have done progress over the years.
Love this video. I’m loving retirement too!!
Hi, thanks for watching. Congrats on your retirement. It's a wonderful thing 😊
Watched your video of 2023 and decided I had to check it out. I was there on Monday and Tuesday last year by myself! That show is massive!! I'm going back this year and taking a young coworker with me because he's interested after everything I told him last year. Now to watch your video and see if I spot myself.....lol
Hi, thanks for the great comment. You are right, it’s a bit mind boggling how big the show is. Thanks for watching. The lumberjacks or dogs are always a great break during the show.
7:53 dogs jump 😊
Hi, thanks for watching. The dogs are great to watch. They have first timers to champions.
Awesome
Hi, thank you!
Great effort on your video, but I'm glad I watched. For $275 per person, the bang for the buck is way off. The fort seems in ruins and not much to look at. The""campsites""look like a place for the homeless, the beach looked small and shallow and the fishing looked terrible.
Hi, thanks for watching. It is a pretty primitive site that’s not for everybody. I’ve seen some videos of folks who’ve taken their own boat out there and fishing looked great off shore. I couldn’t tell about how fishing is from the island itself, but my snorkeling didn’t reveal very many keeper fish aside from maybe a dinner for the night if you were camping. I believe the fort is the fourth least visited national park in the country, that helps explain why they don’t put a lot of money back into it. Nonetheless, if you have the time and money it’s a unique, worthwhile experience.
Thanks for a great video! Ive always wantes to snokel 2 step, but after watching both of you video's....i think ill stick to Captain Cook with a boat tour! 😊
Hi, thanks for watching. I appreciate hearing that I’ve given useful information. Both Two Step and Captain Cook are great, but Cook will always get the edge in my book. We are going back next year and will try both again. Two Step is nice for convenience, if you get there early enough to park. Have fun, thanks again.
What was total cost?
Hi, here’s the website of the company we used for both the charter and the room: www.millerslandingak.com/ I didn’t post the prices because they change depending on when you go and which type of fish you’re going for. After booking a charter in the Florida Keys I thought Millers Landing was quite reasonable.
goldie is the worst place to get conch. It's over priced and poor quality. Walk 10 ft to Willy D and you get twice the conch you pay for the same price
Hi, first, thanks for watching. Second, I can’t vouch for Willie Ds, but we were back in Nassau two weeks ago and were disappointed with Goldie’s as well. The serving was about half to 60% of what they served us on our previous trip, the one in the video. Plus the quality and flavor wasn’t as good. The guy in the video was not working the nights we were there. I was hoping it was just a fluke, but after your comment I’m going to change the name of the video. I agree they are no longer the best scorched conch in Nassau.
Crossing the street in Vietnam is the worst pedestrian experience I ever had. And I've been around the world. Why do I feel safer crossing the street in the Philippines with the same traffic volume? I'll be happy to help you out. In the Philippines, scooters, cars, and trucks are held legally liable if they hit a pedestrian, even if it wasn't their fault. So they are super vigilant and give pedestrians their right of way. So, instead of legally punishing pedestrians for crossing the street in any way they can because they don't have a choice, maybe they should enforce that same legal discipline in Vietnam. In three months, I've seen 4 accidents here. I haven't seen that many in the Philippines in almost three years. I love Vietnam. But if I can't cross the street to check out the new Band Mi Chicken Poh restaurant, then for me, it's a big negative. Food for thought!
Hi, thanks for watching. It is definitely a different attitude towards driving and pedestrian rights over there. It’s their country so they get to set the rules and we’d best learn to adapt to it. As I’ve mentioned in other comments I think the skyrocketing ownership of cars and trucks will force some changes in their rules. I saw a couple accidents immediately after they happened, but not what caused them so I can’t comment on whose fault they were. For now we have to be aware of their culture and their rules and do the best we can within their system. That’s what I was hoping to help people with in this video. Take care.
goals
Hi, thanks for watching. The Bahamas are a wonderful place with great people.
Thank you for an excellent video. I was worried about this trip because my balance is just a bit off but after seeing this I know I can handle the trip. Very well done.
Thats great, I’m glad I could help. I hope you have a great trip and adventure to the falls. Thanks for watching and letting me know, it’s good to hear that I’m helping others. Take care.
I've visited HCMC twice and cross the roads with confidence - in the fact that keeping a steady pace ensures the traffic to gently swerve in order not to hit you
Hi, that’s the key. It’s a lot easier on roads with mostly scooters. Cars, trucks, vans and busses are changing the game a bit though making it more exciting. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I live near HCMC and I agree this is the worst place for pedestrians the city needs to build a sky bridge.
Hi, it was easier a few years ago before cars and trucks became so common. But still manageable, however probably not the best place for your first time crossing a street in Vietnam :)
of course the channel is called enjoying retirement what is my homeland but a gentrified nursing home. Everything about Santa Fe is fake. I dob't know much about toas but i do know old retirees just love it like they do santa fe. why couldn't young people move here and make the state real. no it had to be old boomers who think turqouise is amazing.
Hi, thanks for watching.
Have a good retirement. Best John
Hi, thank you. So far, so good. Take care.
Your from Maryland?
Hi, yes, I am. Thanks for watching.
Any product I’d have to shave off won’t work for me
Thanks for watching. Good luck.
Years of asking the same question finally answered! Using styrofoam is messy and plastic bags is annoying.
That’s great, I’m glad I helped. Thanks for watching.
Not always. I got popped this week.
I’m sorry. Was it a car or scooter that got you? I noticed that’s cars, trucks, and vans play by their own rules unfortunately.
@EnjoyingRetirement scooter with 3 people on it. Luckily, the important parts were spared and I didn't hit my head.
Goldie's used to be a great place to eat, first visit was 26 years ago, they do give you a lot of food though and it's shareable..Will be there in a cpl week for 5 days,so will give them a try..
Great, have fun. I hope it’s still as good as you remember.
Thanks for the video, I’m going to have to make it there in 2025
Hi, thanks for watching. It’s an amazing show. Traffic can be pretty bad on the first weekend, so be prepared for that. Have fun.
@ thanks for the heads up
Love how simple and to the point thank you .. …
Hi, thank you. I’m heading back to Nassau next month, is there anything else you would like to see a video about? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video!!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it and left a comment.
Nice work! I watching during a late lunch break as I just needed to watch this video! What an experience!
Hi John, thanks. I’m calling this a once in a lifetime experience. But, if I ever do go back it will be in winter. 4 times the number of alligators in Florida as there are deer in Maryland. Incredible. I’m glad I helped you get thru the day :)
Looked like a fun time and some good practical tips. Thanks!
It was a great time. It was my first time on a party boat and I didn't know what to expect. I figured there may be others in the same position who might enjoying seeing how it went and how it worked. I will be back, but next time with a cooler and my own rig with mono. Hopefully during a yellowtail snapper run. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fish tacos on the balcony 😊
Excellent idea 👍
This was an awesome video, and thanks for mentioning what time of year you went!
Hi, thank you. I appreciate the comment. I hope you get a chance to enjoy the falls, they’re beautiful.
The carvings are extremely impressive.
Hi, they sure are. I can’t imagine how much work went into them all. Fortunately they were held on by iron nails. When the ship sank, the nails rusted thru, and the carvings fell into the mud which helped preserve them so we can admire them today. If the Vasa hadn’t sunk as it did, it would have ended up being just another ship that served and was repurposed or destroyed in the end and we would never have seen it. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
That's so cool! Was it just a few days ago?! Was it cold during the fall?
Hi, thanks. Yes, it was day before yesterday. I didn’t think about temperature at all, it didn’t cool down noticeably at all. About 87 on the ground and I wore shorts and a t shirt and felt fine. I hope this video helps other people know a bit more about what the whole process is like. Definitely an incredible experience.
Awesome video! Did your goggles fly off during the dive?!
Hi, thank you. The goggles are safe, we took them off after the free fall portion. They are just needed during free fall due to the velocity you’re going. After that they come off and you just enjoy the view. Thanks for watching.
Awesome ! Looks amazing. That looked like alot of fun.
It was. I highly recommend it. If not Key West, then wherever you can. The Florida Keys are just such a beautiful spot. This company is a first class operation. I will be back.
Saw the Vasa last year. I was told I couldn't leave Stockholm without seeing it. I still wasn't prepared for how amazing it is.
It really is awe inspiring as you walk through those doors and see it for the first time. I hope my video did it justice and brought back some good memories for you. Thanks for watching.
Very interesting video, thank you.
Hi, thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
sweden gave away their future to people from a totally different culture sadly
Thank you for watching, it’s an amazing place.
Loved the detailed explanations!
Hi, thank you. It’s always a challenge to know when to go short and sweet and when to go more into detail. This ship is so amazing that I thought it deserved longer and more detail. I’m glad you liked it and let me know.
What Psi are the pontoons and floor?
Hi, I use 3 on the sides and about 10 on the floor.
Great video
Hi, thank you very much for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome video with an amazing representation of what actually went wrong. I really appreciate the research you put into this one making both educational and entertaining. What an amazing vessel .
Hi, thank you very much. It’s an amazing ship and a wonderful museum.
Informative, thanks. Did you rent your equipment from Stuart's Cove? If so, how would you rate it?
Hi, we rented everything but mask, fins, and snorkel the first time we went with them, in this video. The next time we took our own gear. Their rental gear is about the same that you will find on most shops in the area, and Florida. Decent and serviceable. Not great, but I didn’t see any problems or feel any concern about using it. They do like weight belts instead of internal weights though. I had rash guard pants on the second trip and couldn’t get the weight belt to stay in position with the nylon pants, but otherwise all was good. I’d say that if you’re doing multiple days of diving bringing your own gear would be good, but if it’s just one day then you should be fine with their rental equipment. Have fun, thanks for watching.
@@EnjoyingRetirement Thanks for sharing, most helpful.
😂 it's like a horror movie
:) it's actually pretty efficient once you get used to just walking out in heavy traffic
I think the guide was calling those “Margate”
Hi, yes, you’re right. Thank you. Thanks for watching.
Why were you greedy to explain in detail how the paddle was secured from below? Please answer or remove the continuation.
Thanks for watching
Thank you, this was very informative. My husband and I are in our 60's and plan to hike Cadillac mountain this September. Your video has allayed some fears and explained the parking situation. We will definetly check out your other videos for tips and inspiration.
Hi, thank you for the feedback. In most of my videos I try to answer the questions I had before I went there thinking that others would find it useful. I'm glad to know that it's helping you. It's a beautiful place and an enjoyable hike. I hope you get some great fall colors.
As a hater of treble/barbed hooks, I've been doing this for many years as well as building my own spinners. I also use varied hook styles in order to fish plastic trailers. I only wish the industry would get on board with more options. My old eyes and arthritic hands have made hook-swapping more challenging than id like.
Hi, I agree with you on treble hooks. They are awful to get out of a mouth of an undersized fish. Almost always results in a dead fish. I have seen that Mepps makes a single hook Aglia spinner now, but they can be hard to find. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Best wishes.
Nice video Enjoying Retirement. Looks an interesting city.
Hi, thanks for watching. It’s a very nice city, we really enjoyed our time there.
My bucket list just keeps growing!
Hi John, it’s a big amazing world out there. I’ve got one more video I want to make about Oslo, then I’m going to do a full video on the Vasa. It’s an incredible ship.
I like this alot. I used the rail to go back and forth between Brighton and London while in England. Really enjoyed the rail system there as well.
Hi, thanks. I sure wish we had trains like they have in Europe, it would change how I travel. I just got back from Chicago and the L trains just aren’t the same :)
Hi, thanks for sharing your design! But I do have a question regarding the two D ring attachments that seem to receive all the driving force from the motor, are they still holding up strong after long time use, I mean they are glued after all, so just wondering if that will be a weak point over time or they are reliable per your expereince? thanks ~
Hi. The d rings and their mounts have held up without any problems. This kayak is incredibly well put together. I haven’t seen any issues with any of the seams or glue. It still works great. Thanks for watching.
you saved my wallet :D
Glad I could help :) thanks for watching.
