    I bought a NanoVNA-H. Do you know what the SD card slot is for?

  • @jmonte5899
    @jmonte5899 2 дня назад

    I bought a used G90 Mil-8. I've yet to maje a contact with it. RX works great. The antenna tuner will tune. It came set to 1 watt, and I have now set it to 20 watts. It stops RX when I press the PTT. The frequency up/dn on the mic works. Is there anything else I should try? I can reach POTA stations I hear on my 10 watt 20-meter MFJ radio that I can hear on the G90, but l can't get a response from the G90. Otherwise, great radio.

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI 2 дня назад

      I have to ask a few questions. I assume you mean it stops TX when you push the PTT? Also was it a reputable seller where it can be returned?

    • @jmonte5899
      @jmonte5899 2 дня назад

      There is no indication that it is transmitting when you push the PTT other than the RX speaker goes quiet and the meter moves as you talk. It was bought from HRO, and they did not get back to me when I first emailed Tech Support. I did contact them prior to the purchase to make sure it wasn't a European unit or something. So, after a few days, I just replied to my original email inquiring about the radio. They then responded that they hadn't seen my TX problem email, and they asked a few questions. I answered those questions and haven't heard back. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious to an experienced ham or someone with experience with the G90. I'm a ham of 4 months and don't have contact info for any hams in my area who could take a look/test drive and give their opinion on it.

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI 2 дня назад

      Make sure your connections to the antenna are good first. Check if the SWR threshold is set too low. Press the POW button and make sure SWR THR is set to 3.0. You might have to press POW a couple of times to get SWR THR. Then make sure you tune up for the frequency you are going to transmit on. Try that first. Also, if you could get your hands on an external power/swr meter or an external antenna tuner with a power/swr meter on it then you could connect it between the G90 and the antenna and see if you are actually getting any output power. The finals could be blown, which could happen if you transmit without an antenna attached. If that's the case then you will hardly get any output power. I hope that's not the case but if it is then you'll want to send it back. You can also email me if you have any other questions too. I don't mind helping you.

    • @jmonte5899
      @jmonte5899 2 дня назад

      Ok, I've had time to check things out, and SWR THR was at 1.0, and I have changed it to 3.0. Now, while doing this, I have come across the split mode. I looked up how to turn split mode off and I can not get that turned off, so if I am transmitting, it would have been transmitting to a different frequency than my TX is supposed to be going to. Also, I came across the firmware version, and the face unit has a newer version than the main radio. From what I can tell in researching the G90 firmware, the main radio gets updated 1st, so the last up wasn't completed.

    • @jmonte5899
      @jmonte5899 День назад

      Now, I have just noticed when trying to transmit that it shows 0.0w on the screen. I am assuming this means 0.0 watts are transmitting. Are there any settings that can cause this, or would only blown finals cause it?

  • @zs2mat
    @zs2mat 3 дня назад

    I bought a t1 because it will tune 500mw output. I use a tayloe bridge to protect the finals on my qrp rigs but my MFJ tuner wont tune at such a low power output. It stung the piggy bank for sure.

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI 2 дня назад

      That's one of the reasons why I bought the T1 too for my qrp rigs. The manual for the Z-817 says 0.1 to 20 watts but I never tried it with anything below 2.5 watts. I'm going to test it out when I get some time. I'm just curious if it really tunes that low.

    It’s too bad that Elecraft is getting so expensive. I think most of their gear has doubled in price over the last 5 years. I have a KX3 station with PX3 and KXPA100 that I purchased a long time ago. As great of a station as it is, there is no way I would buy it new today at the prices they are asking.

    I use a LDG Z-11 Pro II with a FT-891 since it's rated for 100 watts. I have the Elecraft T1 for my QRP rigs since that's rated for 20 watts. I also have a ZM-2 Z match tuner (which is manual) and is 20 or 25 watts. Wow the T1 is over 300 bucks now? If I was looking for a QRP tuner today I would go with the LDG Z817.

    Hey Joe, excellent guide for people wanting to attempt POTA with CW. It is actually easier than you think. I currently have about 1700 cw contacts as a hunter, and I still struggle with decoding people's call signs. My point - you don't have to be fluent with CW to make contacts and have fun. Just follow what was said in this video and become fluent with your call sign and the few other key items mentioned here and you will be well on way. TU and 72!

    Hi Joe. Just discovered you today and have enjoyed your videos. Thank you. About the ZM-2 Antenna Tuner. I am using a 41' EFRW sloper with a 17' CP and the ZM-2 seems unable to match the antenna to my transceiver on 40m CW. Even after experimenting with my RigExpert AA-55 Zoom I was unable to find a sweet spot. I note that others have experienced the same problem. FYI. JIM ve4bwg

The batter pack is about $20 and the cable is about $9. That specific cable will deliver 12 volts to the QMX and the pack lasts a long time. Looks interesting but I keep seeing people complain about bricking the radio due to power being disconnected abruptly. It’s got an amazing feature set for the money. I have an original QCX for 20.

    • @medicineman4040
      @medicineman4040 Месяц назад

      Wow is that true? Those DC barrel plugs don't lock in. Anything could pull it out. I think there is another radio --don't remember which--- that also suffers from sudden power loss bricking.

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI Месяц назад

      I wonder if those folks have an older version of the firmware because I have both the low band and the high band ones running 1.00.027. I accidentally cut the power to both (because my battery died) more than once and they both are fine.

    • @medicineman4040

      @@JoeN2DI Battery dying is one thing, but something gets knocked this way or that, or my cat jumps on the table and steps on the cord suddenly pulling the charging cord out of the barrel plug socket while operating. Thoughts? Want to do an experiment for me :)

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI Месяц назад

      I don't see how a battery dying or pulling the plug would be different but I just pulled the plug on my low band one twice and it started right up with no issue.

    Thanks for the great video! I had got a license years ago. Like the first year it wasn't required to do CW and at that time I was so thankful. But life happens and I never even bought any equipment and used my license. Now with RUclips all grown up and the great people such as yourself and Thomas K4SWL to follow on here explaining and showing the fun you can have I am really digging into the CW side before I get another license so I can enjoy this great community of people. This video earned you another subscriber. 👍

    It’s now over $300. At some point people will just stop buying them. With the mAT-10 for $229 it’s probably at that point already as soon as buyers become more aware of it. The mAT-10 is good to 30w.

    I have owned the SW3B for several years now. Sold my MTR3B after purchasing the SW3B. The SW3B is a great rig. I have several thousand contacts as a POTA Activator with it. I use an external memory keyer with it, so no problem changing speed or memory space. A rock solid rig at a great price. Communication with the company owner is top notch also should you have any question with the rig. Definitely worth purchasing if you like mobile, QRP CW! Paul NA9M

    What’s a good amount for XIT?

    • @JoeN2DI
      @JoeN2DI Месяц назад

      There’s no hard and fast rule. You just want to be within the activator’s passband. Usually you can pick some random value between 30 and 100 Hz above or below the activators frequency. That should be a safe value to try.
