In this video I try and capture our roadtrip to the Smoky Mountains in our 2024 Subaru Ascent. Driving on the highway we got around 420 miles out of a tank of gas, comfort levels we’re good and drivability was exceptional in and around town. Also plenty of room for everyone in the family!

This race is truly amazing
For sure, it was an awesome experience, only a few weeks away from the 2025 season 🤘🏻
My ‘11 STI has the wussiest horn I’ve heard in my life! Aren’t they supposed to be Hellas from factory? Anyways gonna try these out thanks for the vid!
Haha you’re welcome and as far as the factory horns go I don’t think so, my friend had an 11 and a 16 and I don’t believe they were Hellas.
@ hmm I thought they were on the STI?! Honestly, I probably heard that when I was like 16, 14 years ago lmao and thought it ever since. My ex and my new girl both laugh at it so I don’t even use it lol
@ Haha hey we’ve all been there before, I know someone that thought they were turbos 💀. To be fair though, they are pretty common and one of the easiest upgrades for an OEM+ look that you can do for cheap!
Love Subaru! Was very curious about the Ascent, but wasn't sure it'd fit in my garage, nor my budget... Ended up in an Outback. Really wanted the big sunroof, the Java brown leather and dark mahogany pearl. The captain's chair back seats seem very nice for road trips with friends. Thanks for sharing your experience!
You are welcome and thanks for the feedback! I have several family members that have an Outback and they all seem to love them, especially when the weather gets rough! If we didn’t have a baby on the way and 2 small dogs we probably would have ended up in an Outback or Forester , so far the extra legroom and cargo space has been unbeatable.
what wheels do you have on the car?
They are XXR 559s, 18x8.5 with +35 offset!
Question with regard to the link underneath your video to the WLJH 74 leds: at 4:38 you mention the gold/brass plated leds being the new leds (also mentioned at 4:56). The link shows the old leds at 4:27. Do you have a link to the brass plated leds? Thanks in advance.
Sorry for the late response, the lights I linked in the video came with multiple leds for different light styles, I most recently ordered these which have the brass plating on them and work well, hope this helps! www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07XDB2G3P?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
😂😂😂
You have any issue with people flashing you cus there to bright
Surprisingly not, the car sits too low to the ground to really be any issue for oncoming traffic especially since most cars are much higher. When I had my 7 inch light bar there it was a problem, so this was my solution to blinding everyone haha. These also passed inspection, the light bar did not lol
@ I have a Chrysler 300 and I hate there fog light, I have my windshield tinted 50% and I have hid 6k head light but at night some roads it hard to see. I want something that light up the road so I can see better
I feel that, I think this is a good alternative or upgrade from oem, cheap and easy to install but give out plenty of light. I haven’t had any issues other than the relay but you can buy a new one at autozone for less than $10. Beats paying hundreds for some light kits
@ I understand that, I really appreciate you for this video,
Also these the 20 dollor ones or the 85 dollor lights
Just got an ascent onyx limited certified pre owned (2023) in the same color a couple days ago. It is amazing! And it’s fast, I swear the turbo pulls lol. 🤙🏾
Awesome, I hope you continue to enjoy it! I have been driving ours a lot more lately to get ready for our baby, I feel like it’s the adult version of the STI, still get the turbo’d boxer but the family is safer and comfy 🤣
I sure wish I had oblivious enemies like that
Haha this was a good match for me, long before they added crossplay lol
Another solid video, Austin. Just straight to the point with everything! We specifically produce LEDs for auto. Can we invite you as a collaborator to do a review? If so How can we connect with you?
Don’t use cruise control unless you like to replace pads and rotors Traded a 2020 acsent Up to the 2024 onyx. Less road noise and more refined
I’m not a big cruise control person but I know what you mean, they like to auto brake quite a bit when it’s on, either way pads and rotors on Subarus aren’t too bad once you get used to them, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to do it on your own than at the dealer lol
Bro are you top hats of your coilovers crooked ??
Not sure, I set these up the same way the old ones were before I replaced them, I haven’t had any issues the last 4 years running it like this if so lol
Is this the onyx base or onyx limited? Nice review, looking to get this for my small family!
It’s the Onyx base! We found that it was the happy medium on trims and pricing and also for our family that will be growing very soon! Thanks for the comment!
What stereo is tht wanna get rid of my regular one
It’s the Pioneer MVH-300EX, it has Bluetooth, usb and an optional back up camera but I don’t have it lol, pretty good, never had any issues with it over the last 5 years!
@ difficult to install or no?
Not really, just need a plastic pry tool for the trim and it will expose 4 Phillips head screws and once those are out the head unit will come out and then you can see what wires will need swapped or changed, pretty easy install!
i recognize that road! if you ever see a two tone green wagon with legacy snowflake wheels that’s me lol
Did you try the lane centering?
We’ve tried it a few times, I just didn’t film it since we’re still getting used to it. It works well with the adaptive cruise control, especially on long stretches of straight highway, it’s weird to get so much feedback to keep it center once it finds the lanes lol. Something we’ve never had in our cars or previous Subarus
@@AustinJenner All the lane keeping feedback is very helpful for teen drivers actually.
I didn’t think about that, it’s a lot smoother than I expected, years ago we had a ford edge as a rental car and that seemed to jerk all over the road and was noticeable when it happened, this is pretty smooth so I could see how that would help newer drivers learn to stay with the lanes and not quickly jerk the wheel
Hello I just got these home from US I live in Sweden and do sometimes drives in the winter I’m thinking of putting some thin plexiglass on the inside to keep the cold outside isteed of removing them during winter Do you think it will work Cheers
I think it’s definitely possible, mine came with the mesh so I won’t be putting anything like that on there, I just removed mine for the winter but I have debated on putting something soft on the inside on the edges like felt, my tint has been scuffed up in a few spots lol so be aware if you have any tint.
For those wondering I shoveled the path because my wife is pregnant, the Ascent had no trouble on the way home from work 🤘🏻
Man I miss driving my STi. The road salt is too much here though
It’s bad here too man, as much as I love driving in the snow it’s not worth it sometimes, they over salt the hell out of this place and it’s not even that bad. I didn’t drive today, just had the car out while changing my wifes tires and thought it’d make a good clip 🤣 I do have to go to work in the morning so the cleanliness was short lived 🥲
Have you ever thought about doing a manual swap? My wagon is my daily so i don’t mind it being an automatic but a manual is so much more fun, especially because the car handles so well
Yes I have thought about it if this engine ever goes. But I agree, it would make this car much more fun!
Clean the rest of that snow off before you drive
😂 I never left the driveway
Oddly enough, years ago when i bought my 2010 Legacy 3.6r, my 1st road trip ... 7 hours from Ohio to Gatlinburg. Must be a Subaru thing
Nice! I have yet to drive a subie with the 3.6r in it but would like to! I love the area down there but one wrong turn and the roads can get pretty sketchy lol
Hello, does your car make a lot of noise when driving at high speeds on the highway and encountering rough road sections? My Crosstrek is a great car, my only complaint is tire noise; I find that the wind noise and engine noise are tolerable when driving at high speeds, but the tire noise is quite bothersome when driving on rough highway sections. I need to turn up the volume of the Harman Kardon audio system to over half in order to drown out the tire noise, but listening to loud music for extended periods can also damage my ears.
The Ascent comes with 20 inch wheels so we have noticed it is a little louder compared to something like our WRX, but it isn’t too bad, you feel most bumps but the suspension helps cusion most of the impacts so it’s not as rough as you’d expect!
@ Thank you for your response! In your experience, which Subaru model has the least noise? Is it the WRX, Outback, or Forester? I heard that the latest generation of the Forester has made great progress in tire noise control.
I would say either the outback or forester, I’ve only ridden in the newer ones and they seem pretty quiet compared to the WRX but for long term I’m not too sure since I haven’t been able to drive one
@ Thank you very much for your responses!
You think this will work if you use the same bezels but just cut out the honeycomb bit? I can’t find the same bezels. Only the right side lol
Yea I’d say you would be able to, just gotta be precise! I was going to do that to begin with but didn’t want to ruin them if I messed up lol
@@AustinJenner One more question! Where did you get those corner clear lights?
@D0NPATR0N11 No problem! And they are USR DEPO 95-01 Corner lights from Amazon, I think they are $47 right now. Sometimes you can get them cheaper on eBay
Quick question, what are your wheel/tire specs? Just picked up a 99’ Sport myself and wanna start with wheels 👍🏽 Edit: just found your wheel setup vid so nvm!! Lol
Awesome, glad you found it and good luck with your build!
Still got this thing? I'll buy It off you, I'm awful close to West Virginia
Yes I do but I do not have plans to sell lol
my good friend has one of these gens, i’ve grown to really like them
It has been a great car to us! Lots of road trips, good on gas and pretty reliable
@ are you running any coilovers for your OBS? been meaning to ask you
i cant wait to get the exhaust on mines fixed
I feel that, I just had to have mine rewelded back in February
aww they got rid of the blue needles on the gauges for 2024 :( it was a small detail but I liked it.
Thats a bummer, I just watched a few videos with those in the older models, it would definitely add a nice touch to the gauges, especially at night!
@@AustinJenner Indeed, maybe I'm silly but I loved it when cars all had different gauges with differing colors depending on the make. Now they all seem to have basic white needles with white backlighting. Looks the same day or night. BORING. and I don't even want to get started on the blandness of soulless screens replacing the mechanical instruments.
@jeffb.6642 I agree, that is why I’m holding on to my old Impreza! At least when something went wrong, all it took was a few screws and the entire dash would come apart to fix, now you almost need a mechanical engineering degree to fix any of the tech on these haha
@@AustinJenner yes or more likely, an electrical engineering degree. At least Subaru hasn't went full Volkswagen yet and replaced all buttons with screens.
@ That would be miserable! Lol, on this trip I rode with my friends brother in his 2012 GTI and I couldn’t picture it without buttons, that’s a shame!
have you ever heard of replacing the steering wheel on our gen subarus with like a wrx momo wheel or something to that extent? Been thinking about that
Yes I have! I’ve seen a couple posts in the Facebook group I’m in that has swapped them in. I just haven’t found any locally yet lol
@ i ask only because i feel like the stock steering diameter is a bit big. i have a 240sx that has an aftermarket steering wheel that’s a little smaller (diameter wise) and i really like it. Although i feel like an idiot swapping out my steering wheel with an airbag for one without… lol so the momo steering wheels from the wrx’s would be a good way to keep the airbag but get a sportier steering wheel. the 240 never had one to begin with so i don’t feel too stupid about it. But thanks for the info! It’s nice to hear that it can be done.
@@buttface1127 Sorry it took so long to reply, I had a lot going on the last few weeks, but I agree, I wanted a few I had seen online but without and airbag, this things are tin cans but I’d rather keep the airbag just in case haha. But you’re welcome, if you’re on Facebook you should join Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 1st Gen, lots of tips and posts on the momo steering wheel install!
Sweet ride! Subaru 4 life!!
Subiemobile
just bought one of these and am doing an all around tune up on it, great video!
Happy to help!
One time during my play through Security “Eat my ass” Insurgent “Yeah Okayyy”
Perfect timing 😂
I recently picked up a GF4 myself, 5 speed, and I love it. The low end torque on these EJ22's are nice. Mine also had Raceland coilovers which were fine but I found some perfectly intact stock struts at my local junkyard that I much rather prefer on the car since it is my daily. That would be my best bet to find some or your local Subaru social media groups.
That’s awesome! I would love to have one with the 5 speed but it’s possible to swap in the future if the engine ever goes. And I have yet to go to the junk yards locally but I need to just to stock up on a few things like the struts. They would be much nicer for daily driving
Really tempted to try a pair myself. Looks killer, great video! 👍🔥💯
Thank you!! And I say they are worth it, definitely gives a modern look! So far no issues!
How’d you find such a pristine 2000 Impreza outback?! Man I’d love to find a 99 outback with no rust and low miles… I’ve thought about the Impreza outback but idk if my bed would fit in the back
I was lucky to find it in 2019 with low miles and minor rust and so for the last 5 years I’ve tried to stay on top of all that by replacing and fixing any issues lol. I’ve only seen one person put a bed in these but they removed the passenger seat if I’m not mistaken
I made my own vents with black corrugated plastic sheet, cut two big rectangles side by side (so there’s a piece in the middle to keep it sturdy) then used goop to glue on window screen. So much better airflow now with bigger vents… good in summertime with a fan clamped to my rear door handles. I need some rain guards now though
That sounds like a good idea! With these window vents (they stated on the website) I noticed it messed up the tint in some places so now I have a few scuffs so I’m going to adjust them next time I run them to make sure it doesn’t happen again
Tip for fog: cat litter in some kind of material like pantyhose or whatever
I didn’t think about that, might have to try it this year!
Damn that’s a sick Impreza outback! So clean 👍 I’ve been looking for these for my 99 outback because I sleep in my car and it sucks having to keep the windows rolled up in the rain, especially during summer
Thank you I appreciate it! And this definitely helps especially with rain and snow, sometimes the air fogs up the windows really bad and the defroster doesn’t help so if the windows are down slightly with the guards it makes a big difference
What Head unit are you using?
The head unit is the Pioneer MVH-300EX! Works well and fits very good!
@@AustinJenner Sick, thanks man!
What size are those wheels
They are 17x8 with a +35 offset! They rub slightly in the rear
Do they sell them with yellow lenses/bulbs or did you add yellow tint?
I added the yellow tint, the bulbs are the common led white with black housing
That look nice
Thank you!
The plane and the rocket was perfect timed
Sweet, def going to install this on my Forester. Thanks for the video
Awesome, happy to help!
98, same wagon. Custom paint with black vents, scoop, etc. Thinking about painting it all white like yours... Down to the door latches is detailed!
Nice! Sometimes the paint makes all the difference
What dash pods are those and are those gd window vents
The dash pods and gauges are from Glowshift and the window vents are Visual Autowerks, they fit the gc sedans and wagons!
Honestly people dont show the wagons enough love. My brother had a 9-2x aero and i used to have an 01 2.5 NA wagon. There arent a lot of wagons out there that deserve respect. Tha impreza is one that does.
For sure! I wasn’t a fan of wagons until I got my first one, then I realized how versatile they are. And those aero wagons were cool! Don’t see too many on the road anymore
