First Nowell from Hely-Hutchinson's Carol Symphony - organ transcription
Part of the third movement (First Nowell) of the Carol Symphony by Victor Hely-Hutchinson (1901-1947).
This piece is one of his best-loved and most instantly recognisable works. During his lifetime it was used as the theme music for a 1943 BBC radio dramatisation of John Masefield's children's book The Box of Delights, and was reused in the title sequence to the magical 1984 BBC children's television adaption. Hely-Hutchinson was Professor of Music at Birmingham University (UK) before becoming Director of Music at the BBC.
Originally composed for orchestra, this performance forms part of a new organ transcription of the symphony. The train did not feature in the original score....

Vierne - B flat minor toccata
Просмотров 78Год назад
Toccata in B flat minor by Louis Vierne (Opus 53 no. 6 from his 24 Pièces de Fantaisie) This was performed on a self-built console using the Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ sample set of the Cavaillé-Coll organ at St Abbey of Saint-Étienne, and using stop jambs created in j-organ as a graphical user interface to Hautpwerk. Many French organs use "ventils", contolled by latching foot pedals to turn...
A Christmas Improvisation on a Toccata by Widor
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.2 года назад
Someone once told me that apparently Widor composed his eponymous Toccata from his Fifth Organ Symphony whilst riding on a train. Whether true or not, the great master certainly explained how it should be played as being like the powerful stroke of the piston of a steam engine. Hence for a Christmas performance it would have been been remiss of me not to have included my toy train, even if it w...
BWV729

The Zimbelstern (meaning "Cymbal Star" in German) is a "toy" organ stop. In this recording it literally is a toy (thanks to my son for his kind permission to let Daddy borrow his train set. Actually come to think of it I don't think I asked him if I could.) This is Bach's great Christmas organ piece In Dulci Jubilo, played as you've probably never heard it before.....
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847): Andante and Variations in E flat, Op 82

Sharp-eyed viewers of my organ videos may have noticed another instrument in the corner of the room which I would now like to present. It is a Bechstein Model V, 6 foot 7 inch grand piano with characteristic "fishtail" bass. It was built in around 1900 and was recently comprehensively restored rebuilt to immaculate condition by the renowned piano company SAP of Poland. Mendelssohn's Andante and...
Liszt Ad nos - Salisbury Cathedral Hauptwerk sample set
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 лет назад
In 1848 Liszt moved to Weimar to seek inspiration from its musical heritage, not least of which was Bach’s legacy. Inspired by the success of Meyerbeer’s grand opera Le prophète, several composers wrote pieces based on themes from the opera but none would prove as enduring as that written by Liszt. In 1850 he wrote a Fantasia and Fugue in C minor for organ or two pianos based on the opera’s Ana...
Rienzi's Prayer (Richard Wagner) on the Hauptwerk sample of the Armley Schulze organ
Просмотров 8345 лет назад
Prayer, from Act 5 of Rienzi, WWV 49 Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) Meyerbeer was instrumental in mentoring Wagner to produce Rienzi in 1842 which was his third opera (and at six hours, his longest too - legend has it that at the first performance Wagner stopped the clock in the auditorium to dissuade people from leaving early). It tells of a righteous religious leader, Rienzi who tries to broker...
Coronation March by Giacomo Meyerbeer (Armley Schulze organ)

Coronation March from Le Prophète (The Prophet) Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791 - 1864) In 1534 the German city of Münster became the scene of a rebellion by a group of Anabaptists who expelled all Catholics and established a bizarre theocracy that encouraged polygamy, abolished money and forbade the owning of property. The group’s leader John of Leiden proclaimed himself King of Münster but after a ye...

Surzynski Variations on Holy God (Święty Boże)
Magnificent!
I like how you made your high-tech touchscreen console look surprisingly traditional, and with real pipes. Nice job, and good playing!
Thank you, they are real pipes, saved from a redundant organ near me though they don't speak. They hide the speaker system however.
Truly beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful !
Today, I discovered a new piece ! Thank you !
totally new to me... beautiful and evocative and winds up to a superb climax.
Bonza performance. Masterful and most enjoyable. Also impressed with the your organ setup.
Magnífico , muchas gracias.
Well played, and the organ is really amazing. You did a great job with that!
Do I spy stockinged feet? I thought that went out with George Malcolm
I have to admit, I do the same. In winter with two pairs of socks to keep the feet warm. 😏
I think it might be Prelude, **Choral** and Variation
No its a fugue not a choral
Ein wenig mehr Hall einstellen 😉
FM-B wrote several fine variation sets and it's a pity only the "Serieuses" generally get a hearing. Very pleasing to hear this.
Bravo. This is a very difficult piece!
Hello, I see that you play the Salisbury organ. I also have this great sample set, but recently I accidentally deleted the update patches for this set, and they are no longer available for download on the official website of MDA. MDA tech support replied that they no longer have these patches and offers to switch to HW5, which I do not need at all. Do you have these patches? Can you help me with this question? If you don't mind, please email me these small 4 patches: thermosquare62@gmail.com thank you in advance! Willem.
Very well pleyed. Congratulations for the performance and for the virtual organ too.
Beautiful playing. Looks like a fantastic HW setup.
Un capolavoro da riscoprire, grazie. Gran bello strumento. A masterpiece to rediscover, thanks. Great beautiful instrument.
Beautiful sounding organ! Love your stocking foot pedaling technique!! The only way to play!! More and more young organists especially ladies play in their stockings or even barefoot in the USA!
Could you give more details of the organ and where/how I can purchase/build one please?
Great work, indeed! Of course, even with the best Hi-Fi system (and mine is far from the top!), you can't give yourself a very exact count of what it could result close to the instrument, but you should at least appreciate the endeavour! I'm glad to discover one of my favourite organ played with talent on this so peculiar organ by its builder. HUH?!? I wrote this before having listened to the final climax... Too messy, too fast, too "staccato".. You played the whole piece a little bit too slowly and suddenly, what the hell are U doing?! It's a slaughter... Too sad..
Beautiful playing and instrument console!
Very nice. People always try to rush it, but it benefits from the gradual pace.
Magic!
Edwin Lemare belongs to these organist who are forgotten and that is not justified because a type of organs belongs to Lemare in style.
Wonderfully played!! Had never heard this Allegro Vivace....(sounds much like Widor...but with a twist of lime!!!) Organ sounds fantastic, too!!
Herzlichen Dank für diese wunderschöne Interpretation und das Hochladen! Mich würden sehr diese Monitore interessieren und vor allem ihre Abmessungen. Sind das sogenannte "Touchscreens"? Danke im voraus!
Yes, 23 inch (measured diagonally) touchscreens which are about the same size as the stop jambs on a 3 or small 4-manual pipe organ console.. The music display is a 26 inch screen(not touch) and pages are turned using pistons. Thanks for your kind comments!
Herzlichen Dank für Ihre ausführliche Auskunft! Auch künftig - Gottes Beistand und gutes Gelingen!
wonderful interpretation, beautifully renders the spirit of this composition so difficult to make it true and exciting
I made recordings of this piece, in a few cathedrals in the UK, the organist was a dear friend of mine, prof Roman Perucki, from Gdansk
L'interprétation aurait mérité que l'on filme la console et le jeu de l'organiste .... non ?
Like it? Love it!
Beautiful case, cool "tracker-style" touch screens and it all goes so well in your tastefully furnished home.
Many thanks for the kind words :-)
This virtual instrument sounds awesome! The console is a credit to you.
Is this the "dry" version of the St. Etienne organ?
Nope, wet (actually I have the surround version on my home organ as I have a pair of rear speakers, but the recording only uses the front stereo channel).
Thank you!
What a fabulous setup and the sound is wonderful.
For those looking for the sheet music, it is in Vol 1 of Brietkoft's complete Krebs organ works. Here is a link: www.prestoclassical.co.uk/sm/7233885
I can't find the sheet music either!
Where you have bought this partiture?
Hi Nikolas, the score (and several other similar works) can be downloaded from imslp.org. The link for Variations on Holy God is hz.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/4/4a/IMSLP252584-PMLP409404-surzy__ski.pdf
Organground thanks, very kind!
Beautiful piece and beautiful interpretation
grande qui ..! Davide..!
wonder for my great ears here ..! Davide... 👍
Could you by any chance share your sheet music source for this piece? I've been trying unsuccessfully to track it down.
Christiaan, you can download it from IMSLP here: imslp.eu/files/imglnks/euimg/6/6c/IMSLP542511-PMLP78047-Krebs-organ-works-vol1_kwv400_pp10-22.pdf
fantastic!!!
Your Hauptwerk Console looks incredible!
this number 9 is one of the best Voluntaries composed by Stanley. I love especialIy the first set. But it is quite short. So I decided to add a second part which brings this set back to the G major of the beginning and so gives some more time to this beautiful first set. If anyone wants to try my version: I only need a mail address and you will get a mp3 file and the sheet version . it would be nice if you could give me a feedback. Thanks for your answer. U.M. Schneckenturm
Really enjoyed this! Thank you!
Great! Where did you buy the virtual tablets of stops enlighed? Congratulations!
+avenuedumaine1315 They are 23 inch HP touch sensitive monitors. The "stops" are simply j-organ graphics, MIDI software that can be used to run a virtual organ in its own right, but which is an attractive option for Hauyptwerk users too since the j-organ graphics can be relatively easily designed by the end user whereas Hauptwerk graphics can't be altered. In this case I based my stopjambs on the real Salisbury layout but to make better use of the monitors I assisnged three divisional columns to each jamb. In the "real" console there are only two onthe right, but in my case I put all the interdivionsal couplers in the third column of the right hand jamb rather than keep them with the coupling division.
Thank you for your very exaustive answer; good enjoy by your HW place of fighting! ;-)
Bel pezzo. Splendida esecuzione ed organo magnifico! Bottazzo è un compositore che merita una conoscenza più diffusa! Matteo Pedercini.
Great performance. Reminds one of the B Minor Prelude in the symphonic character of the prelude.
+smb123211 Thanks for the kind words. This is surely a magisterial response to Bach BWV544 and deserves to be better known, as indeed do all Krebs' works. He was absolutely a genius in his own right, but by slavishly following the style of his master (and perhaps suffering from not quite knowing when to stop writing sometimes, his preludes and fugues do tend to go on a bit!) he is far less well recognised than his outstandingly high quality works deserve.
@@Organground Although Ludwig clearly exhibits a profound capacity to compose in the style of his teacher, he seems to miss Bach's sense of balance. Like most of Ludwig's large organ works, this, too, is a great piece of music and certainly does deserve much more recognition and performance, but it does rattle on too long. Liberace was wrong: too much of a good thing is not necessarily wonderful.
Very interesting organ design. I gather that this is a "digital" organ.
+BlueWaltz42 Correct, inside the case is a Windows 7 computer running Hauptwerk software. AMongst other organs, it allows me to play a sampled recording of the Caen Cavaille Coll.
The organ is out of tune awful
+Nico van Jaarsveld Have you not heard of alternative temperaments such as Kirnberger III? or Just Intonation or Ordinaire? Perhaps the Temperament used here was not correct for the key of the music as I know what you mean about it sounding out of tune as I used to think that years ago when I was ignorant to the way organs, mainly in the past were tuned. Most instruments these days are Equal temperament, this organ (sample set) is clearly not equal temperament. :-)
Wonderful organ and organist!
