so this is why you wasn't on the Radio last Night ..lol.
yeap lol
Hello from Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you for the video. Do you mind if I ask you? Why do you have the cable looped near the antenna?
small open air choke, helps with rf feedback
well i guess i will add my 2.5 sense on the subject ! the copper thing is just messed up ! But i am not a fan of sending our info into space That Just Screams Very Bad Idea !
well if it aint Stan the man ! o Not The Old Exploder One .lol.
thats a great radio!! love mine
Has this ever gotten you laid?
As far as I am aware, we do not have an online option for tests here, nor do we have volunteer examiner scheme. Application for test, license and renewals are online only. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
You can test online from anywhere in the states. . Where do you live?
@@HamRadioQso I am not from US. I am from India, on the other side of the globe! Some time back many in our region had taken US licenses. I do not not how that works out. Checking on QRZ, most of the licenses have expired. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Wonder how many repeaters you are able to access with the 2m tower? 73 de Jon, VU2JO.
I’m not sure. I will have to sit down and test that out. I can hit many tho I will let you know the results
@@HamRadioQso In our region we have hardly any simplex activity on 2m! Even repeaters are active mostly at net times only.
@@johnsonstechworld simplex is very active here. Also the repeaters stay active. I’m in a good area for ham radio. Not to mention. 70cm simplex is active also
@@HamRadioQso We have zero activity on 70 cm simplex. I do work Amateur Radio on International Space Station with 70 cm downlink, using my Moxon Yagi which is a single feeder dual band antenna.VHF Moxon rectangle passively couples with 5 element UHF part. Maximum distance which I have worked on 70 cm simplex is 1km with a friend quite nearby, using CP22E VHF antenna working on third harmonic for 70cm. That too with a 5,7 report for a test transmission.
I have two Baofengs that my now ex-wife got me but to me they are toys. I also have a Radioddity GD-77 she got in a second-hand Mormon store here in Utah. It's a DMR radio and can also be used for analog but programming it is a nightmare because you have to fill out a "codeplug" for it and then download that to the radio. I've never used it due to the pain in the rump it presents. The Chinese radios like Baofengs and the dozens of similar brands have poor single conversion receivers and on transmit they often transmit dirty harmonics. I only use the big brand and well known Japanese rigs and will not transmit with any Baofengs or the like. I have 2 Yaesu's and a Kenwood and Icom. They are real radios. I compared my Chinese radios on receive to my Japanese radios and the interference and overload rejection on the Japanese radios is far superior. I'd rather use my ancient Radio Shack HTX-202 than any Chinese radio. Better to pay for one moderately expensive Japanese radio than 20 Chinese ones for the same price. Trust me.
i always say the best radio is the one you have, its all about getting on the air. the cheap radios will do just that. for the most part people cant tell when your using one, they are lower tier for sure. that said, i do own 2 Yaesu radios and they are top notch!! you get what you pay for sure. my goal here is to get people interested in Ham radio. thats what fun about radio tho, you can spend as much or as little as you like, it just depends on what direction you want to go in i guess. 73'S
Loved this, it's great to see someone talk about how to make this hobby more accessible vs just trying to sell us on the most expensive radios possible! Thanks for this video.
Thanks!!! and there are lots of channels that talk about high priced radios, but you dont need a high dollar radio to get on the air and have fun!!! this hobby is for everyone, not just the ones with big bank accounts..
@@HamRadioQso i am also a ham & you really dont half to spend a lot to get into ham radio Their is always good deals to be had ! But you can absolutely go down a rabbit whole if ya so choose !
I got my Tech ticket a couple years ago but I am struggling with memory to pass the General . I had a bad reaction to a COVID vaccine and my memory is not the same. At least I got the Tech . I go nuts on my Qyt and my uv21r . The big brother to my uv5r .
I had a similar issue with Covid in general. Long Covid they call it. Coulda been the vaccine. Who knows. And sorry to hear that. Be persistent and you will get that general. So what if you have to test many many times. Sooner or later you will pass it :) and the Qht is a fine radio. And as for the uv5r. I have nothing bad to say about it. Carry one with me daily,,
I'm taking my test for Technician May 4th. Glad you find your video.
GOOD LUCK!! its not that bad,the key is study. :)
May the 4th be with you 😁 (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

I wanna get a ft-891
Great radios. You will love it when you get one
@@HamRadioQso yeah as a base? Or should I get rid of my ftm 500 and get a ft991a
@@KE8ODY-WV-Ares-Ham-Dad-3O4 lots of people use the 891 as a base radio, good rigs. and the ftm 500 is an outstanding radio, perfect for base or mobile just no hf. the 991a its pretty much a shack in the box. all depends on what you want to do and what direction you want to go in.
@@HamRadioQso honestly I want a all mode in one radio like the 991 id like to sell my two ten meter anytones and my ftm 500 and pay some difference and get a 991a
I wanna do dmr too but hf is my passion
Citizens band on the run for Watts
My radio room is my vehicle. I'm only running around 25-50 watts.
No linniar. Just barefoot.
I've been in ham radio for more than 30 years. I bought my first chinese radio a few months ago. I used it for 3 days, and i sold it very fastly. Never more, even for free, i want a chinese radio.
Agreed!!
Hi, I'm a mom of 2 college students that live over 100 miles away on campus. What is the best radio to buy that would work in case a solar flare knocks out cell towers? Do we all need to get certified in ham radio. Rapid Radio sell ones that are peer to peer but run on cell towers. Would a solar flare render all of them unuseable?
Ham radio will be the way to go. But not every repeater is protected from such events if that was to happen. A lot of radio will be dead also. Some will still work fine. Almost all run on battery backup. And the ones that use the internet or cell signals to run a mode would probably be useless. 2 meter radio would work if everyone lived within a shortish distance of the same repeater. To use that band you would need a technician license. An HF radio with HF bands would be ideal. But need a general license for that. But keep in mind. If that event actually happens. It’s considered an emergency situation and a license would not be needed. Also the bands would be full of official emergency traffic. That’s a hard question to answer because there are so many what if in that scenario
Thank you for the info! So hard to decide!
Good for you! I'm not a Technician holder yet, only paid GMRS tax to the FCC. Looking into the Ham Study app. Two things i noticed on the video. First, you may want to completely change out the two black battery cables. I've seen this corrosion on my cart. (I don't and won't play golf, so it's just a 48 volt cart) The connectors on the wires are weakened by heavy corrosion. Second thing is the antenna guy wire that's anchored in the yard. Put some type of barrier around the wire. Just one weird neighbor could trip on it, and then the lawsuit nightmare begins. No matter where you live, the weird neighbor exists.
Nice video, thank you, I like your manner of talking, explaining, so I have subscribed!
Thanks!!
Thanks for the info! Appreciate it. I’m studying for my technician’s license.
Good luck!! I used the ham study app to learn from. When I was scoring over 80% on practice test. I took it. I only missed 3. Good look to you. KQ4LPW 73’s
That's weird. I got into it for the solitude and serenity of CW SOTA. I have no interest in HT's, repeaters or anything with a mic.
I got my general so I can do grp (5 watts) phone and ft8 20-40 meter. I’m learning cw. Gonna start pota soon. And that’s the good thing about ham radio. Many paths you can take
I also bought a Wouxun KG-UV2D years ago. LOVE IT!!! It has the same issue with the memory. But I figured out the 3 settings that I needed to change to “bring the memory” back to the front (it doesn’t really lose it). Now the display has a poor solder joint somewhere and is blank. Just need to open her up and “get-r-dun”. Bring this bad boy back to 100%.
It’s a fantastic radio. Use mine daily
Glad I found your channel. Really like your simplistic and friendly demeanor. New ham myself studying for general. 73’s KI5LSZ
The general isn’t that bad. Just slightly different material and is as easy as the tech. I passed it the first try.i took t when I was scoring in upper 80’s on the practice test. And thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it Good luck! KQ4LPW 73’s

Man, I thought that was Rob Ski!
I bet that beam crushes it!
i love the beam!!! its been fantastic. longest simplex, 254 miles. highly recommend it
Subscribed. Currently studying for my technician
once you do that get the general asap. so what you have already learned is still in ur head, good luck!
Self deception " I will never need another radio". ..... until you see another magic thing, lol It happens.
The same reason I bought my first Baofang. I have several. now, to some extent for the charging stands, but the radios are good, cheap and reliable ( usually, that is why I have more than a few))

Good stuff! Drug addiction is horrible and those two will hopefully find their way clear and pay for their mistake. Not sure about alerting aliens that we're here though. They may exterminate us based on all the cb radio traffic we've been sending since the '70's! They could be scared too though! 😂 That rain is an hour and a half from me here in Western Hanover Co. VA. 👍73!
What is FRN? Also, can one use this site for study and licensing as a Canadian?
FRN. Federal registration number. When you get the number you are entered into a fcc data base. All licenses issued to you will be under your FRN. And yes they have a Canadian section on ham study. All you need is there. Not sure what the Canadian version of the FRN is. Hope that helps
Free radio? Couldn’t decipher what he said nor how and where to lookup this radio.
If you have had your license for less than six months. You can get a free radio from giga parts. They bundle it with a few things. I paid like $7 dollars for shipping. Here is the link. www.gigaparts.com/qrzjumpstart so if they haven’t changed it much you can get a decent radio fairly cheap. Good luck
2 meter/70mm is OK, but the other ham channels go not only nationwide, but wold wide.
indeed, thats why i got my general and am looking for a good hf rig. a good used one. prices are crazy high in my area. you can buy a new one cheaper than the used prices around here
The QSO is a great name. Talking about radio is what goes on here. I've been meaning to get my license since the early nineties. Just recently started to get back into it. Since the test is online now, and the bands are opening up, i'm gonna get the ticket. I thought you was close by with the K4 call sign, but then I heard you mention Lexington. Hello from Pike county.
i can get into the repeater up there, not all the time tho.black mountain and the other one, i live in montgomery co, its a pretty go distance for me, but once i get the beam on the tower, i should have no issues getting into all the repeaters up there. and get that ticket!!! all it takes is a little study :)
Subscribed! Ive recently become interested in ham radio and am studying for my tech. I used to play with cb radios and built several quad beam antennas which were awesome back in the early '90's so look forward to doing more antenna builds. Def new to ham and find the "q" lingo hard to figure out much less how to find a repeater!😂 Wish me luck but insights into the hobby are great! Tnx👍
best of luck! you will enjoy the ham world :)
Great video, I'm just getting into the hobby and have many questions. Thank you for this introductory video for newbies, very informative. Keep 'em comin'!
its been very rewarding to me, the people and clubs are all very welcoming
At 58 I got interested in Ham radio and now at 60 I am studying for the tests, I purchased a Yaesu FT-60 last month and have programmed a few local repeaters into it. I bought it because though I am not against anyone purchasing from China, I try hard not to.
Very nice, I'll follow along 👌🏻
Any intentions to buying a big/semi big base station?
no. im happy with the radio i have, i do have a radio for HF now tho
Can you make a video on how you took the test online
will do that as soon as possible
@@HamRadioQso awesome I’m following
Congratulations on your license. I've been a ham since 1980 and my early teens. It's been a lot of fun. I wish that some of you newer guys could have experienced VHF and UHF back then, we had huge groups or roundtable conversations and we even played chess on 2 meters simplex. We had packet radio with bulletin boards ( before the internet) my schoolmates and me even studied for upcoming tests etc. I wish it could go back to those exciting times. I'm glad when another person joins our ranks. For HF radio I started off with a broken down Heathkit HW-101 ( a tube powered SSB rig) that my Elmer helped me rebuild. I worked all summer to buy the rig and it took me a few weeks to get it on the air. So enjoy radio and help others get their license. One thing I wanted to give you some of my humble advice. The HF rig you are looking at is a fantastic rig. But for around the same amount of money look at Yaesu's FT-710 if you're interested in digital work, the 710 has everything built in - you don't need an interface and a monitor, keyboard, can hook directly to the rig. Again it's just my opinion. I work on older rigs and all of mine are older - my newest is a Yaesu FTDX-3000D it has built in soundcard and rig control, but if I was a new ham if look at the FT-710 the receiver is ranked one of the top 5 ...73 enjoy your radios hope to catch up with you on the air. I haunt 40 meters mostly. de N3TGY
