i have always wanted to put up a loop but never had the wire to do so, if your like me your on a budget and money can be tight, but thanks to my friend, he gave me a bit over 400 feet of wire that made the loop dream come true. I love this loop!!!
80 Meters on an endfeed with no coil or tuner needed?

i wanted to see if i could get 80 meters without a coil and no tuner needed to use. even tho the setup is not ideal it should allow for some contacts to be made, always fun messing with antennas!!
Jetstream JTB1B Antenna, good budget option?

antennas are costly, and im always on the lookout for a good antenna that is priced right. Today we look at the JTB1B dual band antenna. its a clone of the comet GP9. At half the price of the comet, its worth looking at. $84.95

EXACTLY what I needed to know!
I already have my GMRS license and a FRN from that….will that work or do I need to get another? Also once you pass how do you receive your license?
you can use the same FRN for your ham licenses, once you take and pass the test, they will attach ur new ham license to that FRN you have already. Ypu will get an email saying ur call sign has been issued, and when it shows up in the data base ur good to get on the bands ur allowed to be on
Great info, thanks!
How much concrete do you need in the ground for 100 foot tower.
@@michealbell5042 the pad is 6 foot deep. 72x72x72 inches. Triangle shape. Couldn’t get a truck to it. So we mixed 4 pallets of the 80 pound bags by hand in a mixer and dumped it in. Took 12 hours
Your NanoVna is out of calibration. Need to see a "C" not a "c" on the left side of the display... Good try anyway.. Ham Radio is all about trying.
@@gelatodream yeah. I realized it later and fixed it. The swr was actually lower according to my radio than what the vna showed
My first license was a Novice ticket issued in 1975. Novice Class gave us only one direction in which to get started which was HF CW on the Novice segments of 80, 40, 15 and 10 meters. Most of us used separate transmitters and receivers at that time. My first rigs were a well-used Heathkit DX-60B with a dozen crystals cut for a handful of Novice frequencies, a Hammarlund HQ-110, and a Dow-Key relay. Novice licenses were non-renewable and so when I upgraded to General the following year, I bought a used Heathkit HG-10B VFO to gain some elbow room. I still miss the Hammarlund. The gear is long gone, but I do still have the box of crystals. That Novice pathway into the hobby gave me a great foundation. So many new hams have never had the experience to peak the grid and dip the plate. Antenna tuners were an expensive luxury, network analyzers didn't exist, and few hams worried much about mismatches as long as the output network in the rig could load the antenna.
@@jamesseaman2950 that’s the era of radio I wish I could be a part of. The late 70’s to early 80’s. Radio has came so far from where it was 20 years ago. You can pick up a good vna to see what your antenna and coax is doing for under $100. I remember doing cb radio mid to late 90’s. I never once worried about swr. And I never damaged a radio. Spend hours talking. Now everything is sensitive to swr sorta. I could spend awhile talking about swr lol. And I’m glad ur here.
@@HamRadioQso The other thing I remember from that era in ham radio was that when we let the magic smoke out of our rigs, it was usually possible to fix them ourselves or with some help from friends. Radios were made from discrete components. Surface mounted parts and multilayer circuit boards were not yet a thing. As a young ham, I caused plenty of smoke to escape but learned much about electronics in the process.
@@jamesseaman2950 I know all about the magic smoke 💨. My mother wasn’t happy with me when I was younger
how would i do the questions, do they have a online questions for you to do or do they mail you a paper or something
its all online, the questions show up on a web page and you take it like a normal test
Has anyone tried using an electric fence as an antenna? It's all insulated and ready to go.
i have heard people using it with no issues

cool setup! Can you go over how you ground and feed the coax into your shack? I'm interested in figuring out the best way to go about doing that.
@@fallenspirit123 I actually don’t have anything grounded yet. That something I’m working on. I have an idea on how to do. Just haven’t done it yet
Great video!
Thanks for the straight forward honest video, I am just getting into ham radio, I was given a Yaesu ft-891 by a family member and he also put me an antenna up, so I’ve just been listening in and it gives me great joy just being able to hear people all over the world on this little HF rig. I’m studying for my license in the uk, and just subbed to ur channel, all the best, Steven 👍
big problem is to many unneed connector on your antenna cable as insertion losses there takes away from any gain in the antenna. buying a new correct connector on the N-type having as few as possible all add to more efficient cable coupling of your transmitter to antenna You EFI will be higher with a max of 50 watt and give your repeater more range in the end. Yes it works when all things are dry but all connection will get wet and there just more chances with yours.
Thank you for the advice , Im installing a new GMRS antenna for a new repeater, and need all the tips I can get .
All linked repeaters are illegal and getting shut down by the FCC. That's the end of that as of tomorrow the 28th.
I started with a Tech no code license and a Radio Shack HTX-202 HT.
you still in radio?
ive had my HAM Tech since 2020- ive not yet keyd my mic. and I live only 1 block from a HAM shack. Ive heard tooo many stories of Seasoned HAM Nerds ruining the STEM lives of Noob hams like me (age 55) STOP The Madness that Encourages STEM learning.... that at the same time Encourages podophiles'
Never heard of this before, would definitely like to see more info
Good video. Thats great coverage to hit that repeater, especially given the terrain in your area.
There is one in hazard ky I can get into It’s over 100 miles away. I have a pretty good spot for radio reception.
What did you have before you buy your first portable?
the kg-uv2d was the very first radio, bought it over 10 years ago, i still use it. great radio, then i picked up about 5 uv5r radios, and the primary radio i use for 2 meter as my base station is the 2980r
I watched this, almost hit the "subscribe button" then thought, "I have too many subs to radio channels." About three seconds later I then thought, "So what's one more?" and I subscribed :) Thanks, de KA8VLW, Ken, Michigan
appreciate it, thanks. this channel is just a way for me to share my radio experience,
so this is why you wasn't on the Radio last Night ..lol.
yeap lol
Hello from Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you for the video. Do you mind if I ask you? Why do you have the cable looped near the antenna?
small open air choke, helps with rf feedback
@@HamRadioQso Ferrite's are cheaper, but that loop is also called a drip loop , it keeps water from flowing down the coax into the walls of your house. Any radio supply will sell you ferrites for your size cable.
well i guess i will add my 2.5 sense on the subject ! the copper thing is just messed up ! But i am not a fan of sending our info into space That Just Screams Very Bad Idea !

As far as I am aware, we do not have an online option for tests here, nor do we have volunteer examiner scheme. Application for test, license and renewals are online only. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
You can test online from anywhere in the states. . Where do you live?
@@HamRadioQso I am not from US. I am from India, on the other side of the globe! Some time back many in our region had taken US licenses. I do not not how that works out. Checking on QRZ, most of the licenses have expired. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Wonder how many repeaters you are able to access with the 2m tower? 73 de Jon, VU2JO.
I’m not sure. I will have to sit down and test that out. I can hit many tho I will let you know the results
@@HamRadioQso In our region we have hardly any simplex activity on 2m! Even repeaters are active mostly at net times only.
@@johnsonstechworld simplex is very active here. Also the repeaters stay active. I’m in a good area for ham radio. Not to mention. 70cm simplex is active also
@@HamRadioQso We have zero activity on 70 cm simplex. I do work Amateur Radio on International Space Station with 70 cm downlink, using my Moxon Yagi which is a single feeder dual band antenna.VHF Moxon rectangle passively couples with 5 element UHF part. Maximum distance which I have worked on 70 cm simplex is 1km with a friend quite nearby, using CP22E VHF antenna working on third harmonic for 70cm. That too with a 5,7 report for a test transmission.
I have two Baofengs that my now ex-wife got me but to me they are toys. I also have a Radioddity GD-77 she got in a second-hand Mormon store here in Utah. It's a DMR radio and can also be used for analog but programming it is a nightmare because you have to fill out a "codeplug" for it and then download that to the radio. I've never used it due to the pain in the rump it presents. The Chinese radios like Baofengs and the dozens of similar brands have poor single conversion receivers and on transmit they often transmit dirty harmonics. I only use the big brand and well known Japanese rigs and will not transmit with any Baofengs or the like. I have 2 Yaesu's and a Kenwood and Icom. They are real radios. I compared my Chinese radios on receive to my Japanese radios and the interference and overload rejection on the Japanese radios is far superior. I'd rather use my ancient Radio Shack HTX-202 than any Chinese radio. Better to pay for one moderately expensive Japanese radio than 20 Chinese ones for the same price. Trust me.
i always say the best radio is the one you have, its all about getting on the air. the cheap radios will do just that. for the most part people cant tell when your using one, they are lower tier for sure. that said, i do own 2 Yaesu radios and they are top notch!! you get what you pay for sure. my goal here is to get people interested in Ham radio. thats what fun about radio tho, you can spend as much or as little as you like, it just depends on what direction you want to go in i guess. 73'S
Loved this, it's great to see someone talk about how to make this hobby more accessible vs just trying to sell us on the most expensive radios possible! Thanks for this video.
Thanks!!! and there are lots of channels that talk about high priced radios, but you dont need a high dollar radio to get on the air and have fun!!! this hobby is for everyone, not just the ones with big bank accounts..
@@HamRadioQso i am also a ham & you really dont half to spend a lot to get into ham radio Their is always good deals to be had ! But you can absolutely go down a rabbit whole if ya so choose !
I got my Tech ticket a couple years ago but I am struggling with memory to pass the General . I had a bad reaction to a COVID vaccine and my memory is not the same. At least I got the Tech . I go nuts on my Qyt and my uv21r . The big brother to my uv5r .
I had a similar issue with Covid in general. Long Covid they call it. Coulda been the vaccine. Who knows. And sorry to hear that. Be persistent and you will get that general. So what if you have to test many many times. Sooner or later you will pass it :) and the Qht is a fine radio. And as for the uv5r. I have nothing bad to say about it. Carry one with me daily,,
I'm taking my test for Technician May 4th. Glad you find your video.
GOOD LUCK!! its not that bad,the key is study. :)

Hi, I'm a mom of 2 college students that live over 100 miles away on campus. What is the best radio to buy that would work in case a solar flare knocks out cell towers? Do we all need to get certified in ham radio. Rapid Radio sell ones that are peer to peer but run on cell towers. Would a solar flare render all of them unuseable?
Ham radio will be the way to go. But not every repeater is protected from such events if that was to happen. A lot of radio will be dead also. Some will still work fine. Almost all run on battery backup. And the ones that use the internet or cell signals to run a mode would probably be useless. 2 meter radio would work if everyone lived within a shortish distance of the same repeater. To use that band you would need a technician license. An HF radio with HF bands would be ideal. But need a general license for that. But keep in mind. If that event actually happens. It’s considered an emergency situation and a license would not be needed. Also the bands would be full of official emergency traffic. That’s a hard question to answer because there are so many what if in that scenario
Thank you for the info! So hard to decide!
Good for you! I'm not a Technician holder yet, only paid GMRS tax to the FCC. Looking into the Ham Study app. Two things i noticed on the video. First, you may want to completely change out the two black battery cables. I've seen this corrosion on my cart. (I don't and won't play golf, so it's just a 48 volt cart) The connectors on the wires are weakened by heavy corrosion. Second thing is the antenna guy wire that's anchored in the yard. Put some type of barrier around the wire. Just one weird neighbor could trip on it, and then the lawsuit nightmare begins. No matter where you live, the weird neighbor exists.
Nice video, thank you, I like your manner of talking, explaining, so I have subscribed!
Thanks!!
Thanks for the info! Appreciate it. I’m studying for my technician’s license.
Good luck!! I used the ham study app to learn from. When I was scoring over 80% on practice test. I took it. I only missed 3. Good look to you. KQ4LPW 73’s
That's weird. I got into it for the solitude and serenity of CW SOTA. I have no interest in HT's, repeaters or anything with a mic.
I got my general so I can do grp (5 watts) phone and ft8 20-40 meter. I’m learning cw. Gonna start pota soon. And that’s the good thing about ham radio. Many paths you can take
I also bought a Wouxun KG-UV2D years ago. LOVE IT!!! It has the same issue with the memory. But I figured out the 3 settings that I needed to change to “bring the memory” back to the front (it doesn’t really lose it). Now the display has a poor solder joint somewhere and is blank. Just need to open her up and “get-r-dun”. Bring this bad boy back to 100%.
It’s a fantastic radio. Use mine daily
