Right Place, Right Time - the luckiest day hiking in the Scottish Highlands?
Footage from three years ago, when Stuffer and I stumbled upon perfect weather for a ridge traverse on Bidean Nam Bian. Still one of the best days I have ever experienced in the highlands.

Winter hiking in Austria - Gratlspitze

The weather doesn't always play ball, but it makes for some moody filming conditions. I hiked up Gratlspitze, in Tyrol, Austria, with my pal Scrutts earlier this year, this is a collection of the shots from that day.

Incredible mate. Well done.
Thank you for all the great tips, watching this as I’m omw up to Brighton, UT! Awesome vid overall, intro edit got me a little wet. 😮💨
I was Recce Platoon 1DWR..75-77
1:40 is a gorgeous shot!
Thats a sick edit but video stabilization sucks
Hey i was curious what is your filming setup
Sony A7III with a variety of lenses (14mm-200mm) my go to lens is the 28-75mm Tamron. Usually shoot handheld but sometimes with a gimbal (DJI Ronin), always a variable ND and I shoot either SLOG 2 or SLOG 3 usually at 4K24 as standard, and 1080p120 for slow motion. Try to expose with ND and only use ISO if i have to but as low as possible. Shutter always 2x frame rate and aperture varies depending on shot but usually between f4.5 and f8. For mics I use either the Rode Go Lav mic or the Rode video Pro/micro. I use a cheap monitor which has a 4K display and does negative colours as this is the feature i use most. Make sure SD cards are fast enough and always reset before each shoot/after backup. Hope this helps!
@@redthecameraman Hi Rory! I just watch your video and found it super helpful. I was very surprise when you said you didn't use a gimbal to film this short edit. I own a Sony a6600 and I don't think I could produce an action shot that well stabilized just handheld. Did you stabilized it post possessing? Or do you have some tips on how to film an action shot without it being shaky? thanks a lot and great work again with this tutorial
The park looks so dope
nice one! I did these two in September, but in reverse, and we had pretty similar weather haha
Such a nice route, shame when you miss the views but fun all the same!
Awwsome edit! what camera do you use?
Thank you. I use a Sony a7III.
Bro this is awesome!!
Thanks man!
Yeeessss always look forward to these
Thanks bud!
geiles edit!!!
thanks this helps me a lot
can i use these clips? i need it for a project
If you are interested in purchasing rights to some of these clips then please send me an email and I would be happy to discuss the possibility. Thanks
@@redthecameraman sorry but the edit finish already. but thx u for replaying
Whenever I'm feeling emotionally discombobulated, I watch this video. Yeah, quite a lot of the views are probably mine.😁
haha thanks!
Wow
so sick dude!
How did u make the opposing movements?
For this one, I used a t-bar and it took a few attempts to get the timing right etc. You could also do it on foot with a gimbal or just handheld on a smaller scale, drones would work too
hi rory! looks like you are not using a utility LUT (slog2 to rec709) first, just the color wheels for the colour correction? and why do you shoot in slog2 and not in slog3? i am still switching between them from time to time and have no favourite yet.. cheers marc
Hey buddy! I have used slog2 to rec709 LUTs in the past but I don't use them that often, I think it depends on what you think looks good, I quite like the sony look. Depending on the camera you are using there is basically no difference between slog2 and slog3. I think slog3 was designed for camera that use more than 14 stops, slog2 caps at 14 stops (I could be wrong on this though). I haven't found that there is really any difference between them once they have been corrected and graded so i think either is good. cheers mate, hopefully see you in the spring if we can travel again!
Thank you
so sickkkk
That's an awesome edit. Really laid back! 🔥🔥🔥 You've just gained a Subscriber ;)
Nice work!!
Cheers Karl!
great skiing and great editing
very helpful i’ve been trying to work on my editing/camerawork
I've watched this five times already to get inspiration to start filming this year (if we can go skiing)! I absolutely love what you're doing! Do you have any tips or places to look in particular to find songs with the same vibe as these?
Swifty Kestrel thanks bud!! Finding music is one of the thins that probably takes the longest. These songs I found on free music archive .org and they are licensed under CC BY, which basically means attribution. Its a good resource but the search tools are horrible so its mostly luck. Epidemic sound is good and pretty affordable as is music bed. Artlist is okay but in my opinion overused as it is the cheapest so you will hear the same songs in loads of videos. If you like unique stuff FMA is best or i guess approach an artist directly and try to agree on some kind of mutually beneficial collaboration... 🙂
@@redthecameraman Thanks for the tips and the quick answer! Looking forward to more content from you. Happy new year!
Bloody love Laax... and love this edit! Boom
Robert Davies thanks Rob!! 🙏
Looks like you guys had a fun season, very nice vibe going on, enjoyed it!
pewpewpew thank you!!
This is so beautifully done. Please do more! It makes me feel like I am actually in the Alps skiing with your friends. Missing the mountains at the moment.
Thank you very much!!
@@redthecameraman Thank you for introducing me to Cullah as well!

That was super helpful
Cheers Kyle!
great tips. thanks!
Thanks Matt, im glad they were helpful
fire tricks man keep it up
Rad edit
Coooool
yours is a channel with a huge potential
Thank you very much, thats very kind of you to say! In these early days I am still not sure which way to take it so any ideas/feedback are welcomed!
Starting an edit with a shot proggression of the ski lift turn wheel, following with the skier in the lift and ending with the skier on the top of the park is very used narrative. If you want to create a fresh edit, you should try something else.
Absolutely, it is the most basic type of narrative and you should definitely try to use more creative stories if you want to create more engaging content, however it is very important to have some type of narrative, no matter how basic. Some narrative is better than no narrative.
@@redthecameraman Very true.
Nice
Beautiful footage 🔥
So helpful to see you do this for skiing/sunny snow footage. The lighting is so different from anything else. Especially the bit about blue from all the reflection
You are right, the light is very different on snow, there is so much of it because it all reflected around the place, I'm glad this has been useful for you!
Thank you for this video. I guess there are some silver linings to the dark cloud of COVID. I’m not a filmmaker, by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m learning. ALL these tips will come in handy WHEN I’m able to get back on the ski slope. I’m getting almost as excited about filming this winter as I am about skiing😳
Thanks! Im glad you found it useful! I know the feeling
