I have a friend whose mac talks occasionally especially when left.by itself. I don't know if its exactly Voice Over because it doesn't speak with every action. It just gives occasional notices like "do you want to logout now?". What is it and how do you disable it?

PLEASE READ THIS IF THE USUAL METHOD HASN'T WORKED PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU ARE FURIOUS WITH THE USUAL SOLUTION AS IT SIMPLY DOES NOTHING. JUST SHUT MAC OFF, THEN TURN ON AGAIN WHILST PRESSING THE CAPITALS (SHIFT) KEY. THAT'S ALL. I have had no bloody luck with the usual method they describe everywhere online, and my blood pressure was now through the ceiling, I decided to try what they call the 'safe start up' mode, where you simply switch the Mac off then start it again while pressing 'shift' (capitals) key - the widest one with an upward-pointing arrow, over on the right of the keyboard. IT WORKED!!! That fucking voiceover has completely gone!!! Right, now this is my first few minutes after getting the Serena voice to fuck off, but it feels so good I had to tell you. By the way, I did nothing else but what I describe above, and there actually was no resultant 'safe mode' or anything like that - just that voice no longer driving me to despair. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!! UPDATE: This method is still working 20 minutes in now. I'm superstitious about saying it's fixed but surely this must mean the horrible voiceover madness is behind us. Good luck exterminating it!!! UPDATE TWO: Some weeks later now. I just turned my Mac off for the first time in ages, then re-started it and the voice returned, so I shut it down again and re-started it whilst holding down the 'shift' key (the widest one on the right, with an upward arrow on it) and the voice has gone. Phew!!
