16 Winters: making the music
Просмотров 92Год назад
A compilation of material from my sound-design work on 16 Winters / Bear's Tale (Mary Hamilton), a play performed by the University of Virginia theater department (directed by Kate Norris) Spring, 2022. In addition to sound effects, the play needed music to accompany pre-written lyrics. This video is largely compiled from the music demos I was making for the actors. Hope you enjoy! www.patreon....
The wonderful Yamaha SY-2
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.Год назад
A few sounds from the Yamaha SY-2 (1975 or so), the upgraded version 2 of Yamaha’s earliest standalone. Such a lovely filter, and remarkably expressive aftertouch to the VCO, VCA or VCF. Start with any of the adjustable presets and meander from there. Pitch bend, portamento, pulse width, two ADSRs, resonant high- and low-pass filters, super-fast vibrato. Plus it's never had a problem in the 6 y...

A heaping helping of Thank You syrup to all the good folks in Austin who've welcomed us so heartfully, high-fived us to bed and good dreams. So many, but especially Danny, Carrie, & Mr. John Cook. MiniKorg 700S K2 demonstration (1974)
Просмотров 13 тыс.5 лет назад
Functional demo of this fantastic synth. One minute surrounded by air, the next throttling wooly and present. Tangible, immediate, and expressive, the 700 series is hands down one of my favorite synthesizers I've owned four. This particular machine came with quite a few chips toward the backside of its wooden ends (plus a sticker), but the faceplate actually looks nice. And as you can hear, it ...
DSI OB-6 Osc shift problem

Hi Everyone - Relatively new (and happy) OB-6 user. Bought it used off of Reverb a week ago, supposedly in "excellent condition." But oh man, what is this strangeness? Oscillators suddenly shifting on an initialized patch. This issue seems to come and go. Any ideas? Very concerning. Sincere thanks in advance, Paul
1975 Farfisa Syntorchestra Demo
Просмотров 7 тыс.5 лет назад
A basic function demo of the 1975 Syntorchestra. For the three years I’ve owned it, this machine has been excellent. But recently, the E’s have stopped working on the poly section. Still sounds absolutely electric and singular and wild. Recorded into Cubase with a small amount of delay (DL4) and reverb (miniverb ii). No EQ, compression, or limiting.
Prophet 600 Idling

No music, just five minutes of squelch and sizzle, mostly manipulating the poly-mod section. The sound happened to be running through the Line 6 DL4 at the time. Truly just whiling away some hours. Great synth. :)

    Several years ago, I saw an ad on Craigslist for “free organ and small keyboard”. I clicked on it, and found that it was a Yamaha Electone. Scrolling through photos, I didn’t see that “small keyboard” until the last one: it was a Yamaha SY-1. I emailed the seller (or giver-away-er), but someone else had gotten to it before me. I was so sad that day.

      I spotted my SY-1 the first time among a pile of miscellaneous junk a seller had on FB Marketplace. I bought it 'as is' for around $100. It came to me extremely dirty and with keyboard contacts needing cleaning (so very difficult to play in tune) but otherwise fully functional! lucky find :)

      @Paulcvids 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks! How do you like the new one? It’s had 3-4 K2’s over the years, but the K1 I had in this vid was my fave. Currently only have the 770.

    • @timwendt1935
      @timwendt1935 10 месяцев назад

      @@Paulcvids the new 770FS is what I’d dreamed of for decades, midi, CV, and an arpeggiator. Presets are handy, although the MiniKorg almost doesn’t need presets as it’s always been so simple to get back to a patch almost in real time. Of course my Univox K1 only had the one VCO so the 770FS is a big leap in terms of sound creation.

    Me too am an SY-2 owner. Very nice demonstration you're bringing here! I know how this thing can sound, it's very own sound, that no other synth can bring to me IMO. But you really have to love that 70's sound or not I suppose... I do so :) After about 4 years, still it can surprise me! So, even now, I 'm hearing some sounds I never heard before, thx for that! This will keep me exploring. Many people will see this as a 'preset-synth', but it can do way more than that, what you're showing here, and what I already know. I put a EHX Whammy pedal after the synth, so I can go down a couple of octaves, that really makes it growl like a dark beast!!! Not using this all the time of course, it sounds just awesome as it is, but making it sound lower (and potential to sweep octaves with this pedal) makes it even more haunting! Haunting, that's the word to discribe this synth. And 'Funky' when you want. An exeptional piece of hardware too, the aftertouch is great, even better then some of the moderns, and I make use of an old expression pedal to control the filter, which is a wonderful feature! Most synths (like Moog) only let you control part of the filter, SY-2 gives you the possibility to control as much (to full) control of the range. I can only say, this is a very expressive piece of gear, which was in some ways ahead of it's time. Apart from that, it's got loads of character, way more than most modern synths. It is not the most versatile, because it has this character, but still, exploring it keeps surprising, and yes, it is beautiful in it's own right, both in sound, and in design! Space age 1975 design, got to love that!!! ;)))

      Hey DT. Unfortunately, I do believe I had to send the circuit board to Sequential (just the board, which was easy enough to remove, not the whole keyboard). I can't remember 100% if this is the reason I sent it in, but pretty sure. I'm really sorry for the hassle. I will tell you this though: their repair team is really aces. They're fast, friendly, and -- when not covered -- ridiculously cheap. But first things first, give them a call or an email. Good luck to you. It'll get fixed.

This instrument was a nostalgic instrument that I first touched when I was in high school, and I admired it. I couldn't buy it at that time. Korg recently released a reprint of this instrument. I finally got the instrument. I also made some review videos of the reprinted instrument, so please watch it if you like.
