Scott's Soldiers Episode 66
Display cases are not the most interesting subject and the cost to buy them can leave you asking where did all the money go you wanted to spend on toy soldiers!? I'm an advocate for displaying what you have and this episode was kickstarted by a conversation with Andrew Stevenson of Replica Metal Soldiers & Models about the value of cabinets. While I'm not advocating any retail outlet over another, my limited research led me to the international store IKEA where a wide choices of cabinets is available. But if this is not your pathway, there are other retail outlets, auctions, estate sales, thrift or second hand stores to search out.

This episode is a return visit to the OMSS's 2024 annual toy soldier show, ON PARADE. The show took place at the Franklin Horner Community Centre in Etobicoke, Ontario. The show is a great place to find deals on toy soldiers, books, vehicles and other related items. I found items to add to my Canadian soldiers collection but if you see some items of interest check out Scott Dummitt as he carrie...

I'm revisiting some local shows where I found toy soldiers available. I'm a firm believer that local shows / events of this nature can be a good source of figures, militaria to compliment your toy soldier collection, book and other resources. So get out and enjoy the fine weather, visit these types of events or antique fairs, you never know what you may find. Links: - 100th Regiment of Foot His...

This episode allows me to show off my rather sparse number of Indian Army figures. Given the history and size of the Indian Army I am a bit surprised that there isn't a greater selection from the larger makers. Regardless, those that have appeared on the market are, I think, well done and diverse. For those who are looking for figures representative of the history of India and these troops, the...

In this episode I am wrestling with the terms 'rare' and 'limited edition'. While limited edition is a term used by manufacturers to market or draw attention to figures and sets, my opinion is that it means nothing if 100 or 1000 is the quantity discussed. With rare, I think I am not qualified to discern what is rare and what is not. In the absence of quantitative data, the term is speculative,...

Let's take a look at personality figures, be they military, historical, fictional or from the silver screen. If you don't have a personality figure, it will only be a matter of time. I believe they can add context, satire or a sense of whimsey. Personality figures can be the basis of some collections - think Santa Claus, Napoleon, Caesar, the British Royal family or be the eye candy to that fir...

Welcome to the first episode of 2024. Today I want to share with you a conversation with noted London toy soldier vendor Andy Morant. Andy has been a long time vendor at the Portobello Market, but he also has a website where a large selection of previously loved toy soldiers of all ages and origins can be found. In our discussion Andy shares his candid thoughts on the state of the hobby. Andy i...

London Toy Soldier Show December 2nd, 2023. After an absence of several years I made it back and enjoyed every moment. Lots of great figures, a chance to catch up with fellow BMSS members including James Opie. I even managed to pick up a few sets along the way. Yes, my recommendation is to go and see for yourself, particularly if you collect figures from UK makers. It's a casual and fun experie...

Happy Hallowe'en!! This episode is a bit of a lecture. I'm starting to hear and learn more about the challenges, frustrations of what happens to our toy soldiers collection post mortem. We are not getting younger and yet we are doing what all humans seem to do - avoid the inevitable, procrastinate and simply kick the can down the road. Well, I'm going to remind you that what Benjamin Franklin s...

This topic should come as no surprise if you've followed my channel. The Canadian Expeditionary Force was Canada's military contribution to the Western Front in WWI. Over the decades, many makers have made sets of WWI figures of the Commonwealth participants. I have a number of sets which are primarily Fusilier Miniatures and Tommy Atkins. Both lines offer a wide variety of sets and the Turner ...

Although an active regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces celebrating 140 years of history, collecting figures of the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) can be difficult. Today is all about ceremonials. We're talking about Britain's ceremonials, those glossy Household Cavalry or marching palace guards and other assorted figures that Britain's has made. If you're like me, you may collected these on visits to the UK, or were given them as gifts. Perhaps they are even your passion like bands, Napoleonics or Indian Army. However you acquired them, they are related t...

In this episode I am attempting to entertain you with my painting skills...not. I purchased this Renault FT 17 tank several years ago from RP World Models. The model came in four pieces and was easy to paint and assemble. It took several weeks to finish and I think it will blend in well with some of my WW1 figures from Fusilier Miniatures. The Renault FT 17 was produced by the French auto manuf...

I have had at least two of them. They were all "played to pieces". The big thing at 4:25 still lies around somewhere and could shoot if I could reassemble the affutage (?). The plastic shells are mostly lost, we used iron balls that had some impact on the target. The source of the iron balls are best not mentioned. And they are also gone except a few - they tended to fracture.

Thank you for introducing several volumes that I have overlooked. I have a small collection based on the British, Dominion and Indian armies of July 1914. Many are figures from my childhood. Identifying and reading about them has been a delightful sub- hobby giving me many hours of enjoyment. This would have been impossible without the works of Opie and others. In many ways, the hobby allows one to relive the excitement of receiving toy soldiers as presents. That magic feeling which still lingers of opening a large box containing the entire Guard Mounting set by W.M. Britain is still vivid and is refreshed by reference amd research. Once again, thank you.

Good topic Scott...a now long gone Toy Soldier expert once gave me very simple advice on "Rarity". "Anything can be "Rare" he indicated, a pair of your old sneakers are rare but do they have any desirability that then turns into value". Rarity does NOT equal value was the point he wanted to instill in me.

you make some very good points. personally if i like it and can afford it then i buy it rarity has no influence on my decision. btw, i have the first two versions of the naval gun - so they can't be that rare.

Hi Scott, Thank you for creating this wonderful video. For many it is like a once in a lifetime trip. In addition to seeing all in one place the best England has to offer in the world of toy soldiers, you also got to meet some of the leading minds in this great pastime. I also appreciated how you listed the different manufactures, and some of the items to be aware of when attending the show, including what to also see while in London. Finally I was pleased to see pictures of castings that were for sale and figures of different sizes. It is great to know that there was also something at the London show for those who do their own figure painting. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. TW

I enjoyed your excellent review of the show, unfortunately I could not get to the December one, I went last year to the Spring one. James Opie is excellent at identifying toy soldiers even ones that are difficult to understand who manufactured them. Hopefully I will get to one of the shows in 2024. I collect plastic too and the Plastic Warrior show in May next year in Richmond is also a good one to visit. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.
