  • @sarahjames505
    @sarahjames505 4 дня назад

    Some good points, but opting out would never work. It is a benefit no doubt. I think if for the top 20% the state pension makes up 23% of their income so basically their income, with out state pension is about £38,500, that is quite enough to live off. So a good cutting of point is say 35,000-40000 where you would lose all your state pension when it is means tested. We have done that for child benefit and no one here is grumbling. It will have to be done by one government or the other since the birth rate is falling. At present we have 5 workers to 1 pensioner, by 2050 2 to 1, so the current system is unsustainable, especially when you take into account the cost of an ageing population. Interesting to note the Tories 2024 finance bill, which never became law due to the election, gave the government powers to look at the bank accounts of all benefit claimants. It was suggested by some it was not just about fraud, but an opportunity to start looking at means tested state pension. All parties should get together to spell out the truth to the next generations, the state pension is likely to be for the poorest only and to survive well you better get your own pension going, while you also grapple zero hours contracts, rent crisis and housing crisis which when all put together make it so easy to plan ahead and by the way also pump out a few children (cost to bring up a child £160,000, but maybe be better put in your pension pot).

    • @sarahjames505
      @sarahjames505 3 дня назад

      @@Stuart-f2m sadly that will be the case as when they removed child benefit from the richest unless you have a way to pay for it all with a falling birthrate where there simply not be enough workers to pay for the system. The state pension will not be enough to have a descent retirement so people will want to put more away. Also the cut of point must be set high enough to make worth much more than not bothering. But you may also be right in which case the age we retire will just get higher, set to be 71 by 2050. We may be living longer, but we cannot work that much longer. The other solution the amount we get in real terms will get less and less so we just have to save up more. The only good news with birthrate is house prices will go down.

      Do you think means testing happens by Magic. ? What money is saved when you have to hire thousands of Civil servants on large salaries & gold plated pensions to do the means testing ? 13 Million yes MILLION pensioners to means test. Staff numbers alone got to be tens of thousands . Expensive Computer programs that track bank accounts . The Computer program track n Trace cost 37 billion . @@Stuart-f2mI see what you are saying but they means test 19 million parents already via their tax code to see who has to repay child benefit, so no need for new software just expansion. All worked out for them and letters sent automatically. The sums involved saved by this no where need the figure of pension costs. The example you use track n Trace cost 37 billion is different ball game in the amount of information and data involved across so many providers many not using the same systems. Admin cost not that much more since they already administer the pensions of 13 million. As with universal credit there are 6.7 million people but by using there tax information they can claw back money, all worked out for them and letter sent automatically. At present they tell my private pension to tax me via my tax information. So I can see no problem doing the same for pensioners. Blood bath or not what do you suggest we do about the simple maths of falling birthrate v ageing population? The maths says unaffordable. NB the published figure show the highest pension payment in the "civil service" is £180,000 pa for an NHS consultant, I see no reason why he/she needs the benefit pension payment of £10,000 or anyone with an over £40,000 private pension can lead a good life without the state pension. Those type of people are not going to stop paying into their pension pots so no bloodbath. But the good news there is no evidence that Labour intend to means test, they are carrying out a review of pensions as good goverment did and as the tories did rasing the pension age, diddling WASPI women who with little warning had pension age changed. Using their system by 2050 retirement age will be 71!!!! just imagine.

      @@Stuart-f2mI did cover when I compared it with child benefit for 19 million parents who will also have many different income streams. You pay back 1% of your child benefit for every £200 earned over £60,000. So at £70,000 you will need to pay back 50% of the payments. Once you or your partner's income hits £80,000, the charge wipes out all the child benefit. So if they can do that for child benefit they could do it for pensions as well. In the same way pensioners parents have multiple income streams, but also further complicated by co-habiting as well. It is not just about tax codes. It is actually called a High Income Child Benefit Charge. The programme could easily be used to create a High-Income State Pension Charge, in fact easier since it is not household driven or partner related. But if the problem is left alone we still have marry falling birthrate with ageing population, 5 to 1 now, 2050 1 to 1 unless pension age is increased to 71, but research shows that by age 70, only 50% of adults are disability-free and able to work so in effect will not change the in work numbers.

    If they did meddle with it I would lose much incentive to save for my future retirement. What’s the point? They would just change the rules and raid it in future. Trust will have evaporated. Millions will instead just live for the day. Blow their money and rely on the state.

    My colleagues seem to be retiring to get their hands on the Tax Free cash despite having no plans of what to do with it. I just hope that on October 30th they aren't shown to be the wise ones while I am still adding (significantly) to my pension in my sixties

    Another reason regarding No.2. Once in payment a large chunk of my DB pension will only increase by 2.5% a year. Even if inflation is 10% a year. Check your scheme details for similar rules which are all based on legislation introduced by Gordon Brown. There is certainly no "Triple Lock" in company DB schemes.

    Getting hold of the tax free cash seems to have been a major factor in now retired colleagues retirement plans. After taking it it was burning such a hole in ones pocket that he upsized his house (which was probably a better idea than spending £60K on a new car like another did).

    If you means test the state pension, people wouldn't bother to pay into private pensions, as it would limit their return, as you say. Personal pensions aren't currently compulsory, but don't put ideas into their heads!

    Throughout history, mankind buried their treasure. Provided the location was never revealed, owners knew their wealth was safe. From time to time, they would have dug-up some of it. The rest, they kept buried. Centuries later, the treasure might be discovered. But that is no concern to the man in his grave.

    They are already doing this, we had a review of our benefits/pension and we had to provide bank statements and PayPal statements because they are looking for hidden savings. It's terrible that they do this under the threat of cancelling payment if you don't conform. Yet again the goalposts are being moved against the elderly. No such reviews and evidence of identity and Bank accounts are made to the millions of immigration legal and illegal for them it's just given, give, give. It's persecution of their own citizens and discrimination because migrants don't have this information especially the illegal migrants.

    The title is misleading if the facts were published it would read these checks are about the benefit system & fraud nothing to do with pensioners bank accounts anyone claiming benefits who have over £16000 in their account will possibly have their benefit stopped & its plausible a majority of older generation pensioners won't have that amount or be entitled to any benefits & I am one of those pensioners !!

    Nice but you didn’t mention inflation hedge. If we place the whole 100% into an index linked pension then if we do have a period of high inflation it’s far more advantageous than having inflation eat away the real value of the 25% we took out. Naturally this is only a consideration for those that don’t have a need for the tax free lump sum.

    Take it! I’ve taken it from one of many larger pensions (I’ve a few pensions taken when I was a teenager and more along the way) and I’m no where near retirement age. Since I retired early my partner and I have lost many friends to cancer, Parkinson’s etc, some as young as 30, others in their early 50’s plus, never to enjoy their pension, free time or spending their pensions with their families. It’s rare to see people live past 80 these days. We want to enjoy our twilight years, spending time doing what we want and buying what we like, not leaving it to others.
