Gateron Chocolate Low Profile Switch Review and Sound Test
Here's how the Gateron Chocolate Low Profile Switches sound out of the box, hand lubed, and compared to Nuphy Cowberry switches.
Lubing was done with Krytox 205g0 on the bottom housing, top housing, spring and all surfaces of the stem.
The Chocs still maintain a fair bit of tactility even with the stem leg and leaf spring lubed.

Lube used is Krytox 205g0 and a fine brush. The factory lube job gives a decent bottoming out sound but its really scratchy as it tops out. Lubing the top housing, spring and leaf are key to getting a clean top out sound and an overall cleaner sounding switch.
Monsgeek M2 Custom Brass Insert vs Stock Aluminium Insert sound comparison

Got a custom brass insert CNC'd for the Monsgeek M2. The original inserts are made from aluminium and weigh about 31.5g for the pair whereas the brass inserts weigh 97.5g which is over 3x the weight. It doesn't change the pitch or tone of the board, but makes the sound a bit cleaner, and the attack a bit punchier. Hand lubed Cowberry switches Hand lubed and tuned stabilisers Stock everything else
I know this depends alot on the mic you use but in your video the cowberry switches sound way better than in other videos. Did you do something else with the keyboard? more foam for example?
At the time this video was recorded, the keyboard was internally stock. I think it comes down to my lube method. I've posted a video on how I do it on my channel.
It reminds me of porcelain somewhat somehow
Thanks for the video! Did you grease over the factory grease? I want to grease my Gateron Chocolates
Yeah I don't bother to clean them out.
How is leaf ping noise? I tried KS33 brown, but the leaf ping noise (metallic contact noise) was too harsh so i ditched them
Which is you favorite linear low profile Nuphy?
What switch opener are you using in this video?
The switch opener is just the top housing of another low profile switch.
Did you end up keeping these on cause the browns I got on the keychron feel like absolute moosh. Did they feel as good as atactile even though linear? Fatiguing?
Definitely kept the cowberries and tossed out the browns. Never going back. For me I care more about the tactility of bottoming out the switch rather than the early bump - and the cowberry has a very crisp bottom out. They are not fatiguing to use at all.
@@keebmods great to know. You didn't happen to like Apple Chiclet wired keyboards from back in the day did you?
@@TristanPope Never been an apple guy.
Thanks for this breakdown. I have 2 questions (i have never lubed): - is this a 1 time process, or will the lube slowly take off while using the keyboard? - is there a big difference when i apply little too much or little less then the other switches? Like, it looks kinda hard to apply exactly the same amount everytime..
Thanks for this video. I just lubed all my cowberries on the Air 75v2 with this method and it took like 6-8 hours but I’m very happy with the result. My first lube session! I think I may have over-lubed a couple but that should be an easy fix.
Yeah this method does take a while so you need to enjoy the process to reap the rewards. Remember that a little goes a long way when it comes to lube.
Hey, what do you think about woque switch that you used on this video? I hear many people complain about the stem woble
Yea it does have pretty pronounced stem wobble but it's a trade-off I guess. I really like the short travel of this switch and just got used to the stem wobble after a while so I don't notice it.
Great comparison. Interesting since there's a lot of improvement after lubing. By chance, were you able to compare it with Nuphy's Wisteria tactile switches? Since both are low-profile tactiles? I am currently loving my Cowberry linears on Nuphy Air96v2. They also sound great on my Keychron K17 pro. But I am curious of trying tactiles next time.
I don't own a full set of wisterias for comparison, and there are a lot of videos on youtube already doing single-key comparos which I don't find too helpful. My subjective opinion is that wisterias sound louder than the chocs but more muted than the cowberries. If you observe the stem pole of the wisteria and cowberry, you'll see that the cowberry is a true long-pole stem with a solid tip that gives a clean, clear bottom out sound. The wisteria and choc (and regular brown) have the same type of hollow tip that gives a muted bottom out. When you add hollow tip + softer POM housing of the choc that gives the most muted sound. Summarily, in terms of volume its Choc < Wisteria < Cowberry.
@@keebmods nice. Thanks for the input! Since I am more inclined to muted sounds, I will definitely give Chocs a try.
@@keebmodsi've finally tested the Gateron Chocolates and they indeed have that silent deep creamy sound useful when I'm working in the office. The sound is not too loud and after lubing, it even sounded better with consistency. This is now replacing my Cowberries on Keychron K17 Pro for office typing job.
Sounds amazing, what lube did you use?
Just regular Krytox 205g0
Okay just completed it, following your instructions, same switches too. The keyboard sounds waaaay better. I'm gonna post a stock vs lubed video soon. I didn't do an instructions guide, so is it okay if I link this video in my description. I honestly think this deserves more views.
Go ahead mate. Glad it was of help and you got the payoff for your effort.
Where is the video my guy i am looking forward to it :D
Just ordered my lube and kit, can't wait to try this out. Thanks for the video, most helpful one by far.
You had a video on lubing the cowberry switches which were really helpful. Can you show us how to lube and tune the stabilisers?
Do the Nuphy switches fit on the board without any modifications?!
They are basically Gateron switches, so yes they are interchangeable with any other board that uses Gateron Low Profile switches.
Nice sound! I love a good linear switch.
Yeah hand lubed cowberries sound very clean.
I'm trying to improve my typing could you tell me what site were you using please?
Monkeytype
@@keebmods Thank you!
Stock ?
The keyboard itself is as it came out of the box. Switches and stabs are hand lubed and stab wires have been tuned.
@@keebmods thank you for answering
@@keebmods Does the normal gateron switch opener work ?
@@ymnN_ I don't have one of those... but normal switch openers will not work. You need to use a small screwdriver or tweezers to pry one switch open, then use the top housing of that one to open the rest. I demonstrate this in the 'how to lube' video on my channel.
Sounds great!
Thanks for this. I might be one of the only ones, but I kinda hope if they come out with a v3 version of this board that they make an option for it to be clacky instead of thocky or marbly sounding.
The clacky version you're looking for is the Keychron K3 pro 😂. Put the cowberry or aloe switches in there and it'll clack for you all day. I have a video of cowberries in a K15 pro up on my channel. IMO the Keychron low profile boards all have the same build and therefore all sound roughly the same. I have a K3 Pro as well but with brown switches in it and foam modded so it's not all that clacky, but still clackier than the Nuphy.
@@keebmods I have the KeyChron K3 and just ordered the Nuphy Air75 v2 Cowberry. Why would putting a cowberry switch in the Keychron make it sound clacky? The cowberry is a linear switch, it's not designed to be clacky?
Which ones do you prefer between the chocs and the cowberry? I just bought ceramic keycaps and love them but I have low profile nuphy v1 brown switches and I am thinking of changing them
If I had to choose one it would be the cowberry. They are glass smooth after hand lubing and have a more satisfying bottom-out feel. What ceramic keycaps did you get? I don't know of any that are suited for low profile switches.
@@keebmods Awesome, thank you for the recommendation! And which normal profile switches would you recommend? I got the cerakey caps, and even though they are not low profile, they kinda work on the nuphy low profile switches - I think they just hit the bottom or are a hair above it. I'm sure however the sound would be better with normal switches
@@yorgohoebeke My favourite normal profile switches are Wuque Morandi. I like them because they have a short stroke and so don't feel very far different from a low profile switch. They sound nice and marbly, and can be used stock as the factory lube job is already very smooth. Note though that you cannot use normal profile switches on a low profile board. On the cerakey keycaps, im pretty sure all cherry profile caps will hit the top housing of low profile switches. They'll work, just that the sound and feel won't be optimal.
@@keebmods Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I'll look into those switches. I think I might buy a separate board for the cerakey keycaps + the switches you recommended. Last question therefore: any specific board that you would recommend to me? (preferably wireless connection and Bluetooth). I'll probably binge-watch your videos to check the ones you have tested :)
@@yorgohoebeke I'm glad you're finding my content useful. Boards really depend on your preference as far as sound and feel are concerned. Do you like thocky or clacky? Bouncy or firm? From a productivity/functionality perspective I only use boards that support VIA so I can program macros. Also consider the layout/form factor and what keys you need to use on a regular basis.
Crap brand Good luck with the warranty and the support
I'm not paid to support or defend the brand. Your opinion is your own.
Soooo creamy
I think sound is relative. I'd now consider them 'clean' rather than creamy - relative to the Gateron Chocolates I now have installed in this board. There's a video of that up on the channel.
Hey how did you manage to get a brass weight. Is there files for it? Thank you
Hi Suzanne, I had it custom laser cut from 3mm brass plate. I don't have a file for it because I drew it up based on manual measurements, and when it came back from the vendor the dimensions were slightly off. We're talking like 0.5mm off which is enough to make it not fit, but I was able to get it to fit with some filing, sanding and elbow grease.
@@keebmods thank you. sounds really cool. Do you like the bass better or aluminum
@@SuzanneChuBrass sounds better. You can clearly hear that it eliminates all the case ping.
Is this loud for an office setting?
I would say it's within acceptable limits - and I work in an open office. It also really depends on how hard you type of course.
i bought it and sell it right away after 3 days cause it so loud. i purchased the lowfee right after and i love it.
how did you lubed them? i have lubbed my k15 its still a bit scratchy and what drives me crazy is high pitched clicky noice when tapped with more force
