Everything I’ve Learned on Blues Tin Whistle
I haven’t posted very consistently on this channel, but I’d like to start posting more and to start with, here’s a catch up video on everything I’ve been working on so far. Hope you enjoy it and enjoy the blues pennywhistle/tin whistle as much as I do.
I’m not that good at demoing, whilst talking in between, so I have made a little short videos of some of the demonstrations I do in this longer video, but much cleaner and on a better whistle:

Solo E blues on tin whistle
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
At the start of the year I decided to start exploring the tin whistle as a blues instrument and so now, at almost the 6 month mark I wanted to make a few short videos to checkpoint my progress, of which this is the first. For some reason I have felt much more comfortable posting videos that are kinda related to my main goal, but not right on the money - recorder solos or jazzier stuff on the C ...

I wanted to find out if it's possible to play blues/rock on a really cheap recorder, like the ones school kids get given. The verdict - yes you CAN (so no excuses kids - become a blues master today) but even the next model up (price wise) is a lot easier to play, which makes it more fun and less like hard work - as shown in my video of me playing my favourite recorders over the same backing tra...

The whistle works! But I think I’ll also post another video when I’ve done more fine tuning and gotten it totally in tune. You will need: Kettle for hot water to take the head off and rubber grips help too. 1cm length of metal or plastic tube to extend the whistle (can use rolled plastic from a plastic bottle) Electrical tape Sheet of plastic (optional)

    Life long Clarinet/Sax player here. The hole placement on a C whistle fits under the fingers. All down= D as read for Tnr Sax. To my mind a C whistle= an instrument in Bb but transposed up a tone as we would read a part. Confused? I didn't explain it well but it works. It's fun to play & sounds great thanks to your videos on tweeking. You play lovely & I've learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing. ❤

    I bought a very secondhand Clarke C whistle earlier this year (from a stall at a folk dance festival) and I just fell in love with how it played perfectly instantly without me even trying - but I did notice the metal around the mouthpiece being a bit dented in a way that didn't look original, plus it wasn't round like yours but more flattened - plus there's some paint missing on top which I've just assumed was someone biting down while playing but now I'm thinking it's maybe from a hammer which would make sense now! What a cool discovery, thank you

    You are absolutely amazing! 🤩 Thank you so much for bridging a gap I've been missing. I'm a jazz saxophonist with a love for tin whistles. The instrument is great for finger dexterity. I shall study your teaching and attempt blues on my D, C and Bb.. though I feel the C is the best choice? How do you feel about flutes? (I have a C dizi and a Dong Xiao in G that may be able to utilize a bluesy approach 🤔)

    I thought this one was especially good! Your inclusion of trad Irish phrases was tasteful. Glad to see someone else playing blues whistle! I play whistle in 2nd position (cross whistle) for blues. D whistle for E minor, C whistle for D minor, etc. Gives you a flat 3rd and easy to slide into/outof flat 5th.

    I have a question. Is this the same as the arabic pennywistles?, di they play the same sounds? Because those are very expensive and i really want one.

    • @Grimmwoldds
      @Grimmwoldds 2 месяца назад

      Tin whistle is tin whistle is tin whistle. Fipple at the top, tube with holes. It's physics based, not a weird affectation. Lookup Nicolas Bras, he loves to explore the different ways he can use PVC pipes and different mouthpieces to generate sound(from digeridoo to tin whistle to bagpipes which all use a tube and holes and air to shape sound). An "Arabic pennywhistle" is just a tin whistle with the holes in different places to hit the Arabic scale rather than the "normal" scales you get on a "normal" tin whistle. FWIW, they wouldn't have used pennywhistles, they'd probably have used a "ney/nay/nai/whatever" instead. Very similar instrument in that it uses a tube and holes in a very similar fashion/fingering, but mostly flutes and not whistles. And the reason they're expensive is because they're only available from expensive(custom mostly) whistle makers. They seem to charge the exact same amount for the Arabic tuning as for a normal tuned whistle.

    What an interesting idea! I tried something like this, but instead of using wire I cut a length of 1/2” copper pipe, split it down the side and crimped it so it was a snug fit around the upper bore of the whistle. I can’t say for sure if it makes a noticeable difference in the sound, but the instrument has a good, solid feel to it now. I think I will add another bit to the lower end of the whistle as well. The good thing about using copper pipe is it can easily be removed or swapped out to another whistle. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hello, I have a question. Someone told me that Robin might serve me better for playing folk and some Van Eyck pieces (like Daphne) because it has an appropriate tone (somewhat strong low notes), compared to even superior models (speaking of what I'm specifically looking for). I ask you, could the Robin work if I only want it for this? (compared to other aulos models)??
