ACE Roleplaying Games Club
США
Добавлен 28 авг 2018
This is the official channel for the ACE Roleplaying Games Clubs, where we're Gaming for Good. ACE stands for, "Achieve Create and Entertain." We (ok, currently just I) help teenagers set up their own roleplaying game clubs wherever they are. I teach you how to game master, so your sponsor (usually a parent) doesn't have to; and you can tell your own stories with the lifelong friends you'll be making along the way.
The first ACE Roleplaying Game Club was established at Mythos Games in South Jordan, Utah in May of 2021. Anyone in the area is still welcome to join. But this channel is here to encourage you, teenagers, to make your own clubs in game stores, libraries, after school programs, church groups, and any other location you may have a group of friends who want to get together and tell a story.
SPONSORS: If you are a parent/sponsor who got roped into this, please ping me at nascent.gm@gmail.com and I'll help you out to figure out the initial logistics.

Gaming is About Love
Roleplaying games #rpg have proven in my life to be the most truly inclusive thing I've ever done. I hope you find it that way too. It is a #socialcontract in which we all agree to help each other tell the best story possible. I have never felt hatred or exclusion for any immutable trait or fact about anyone I've gamed with. I hope you haven't either. Good gaming to you all. And I hope to see you at my table.

ACE RPG: Simply GM XXIX The Last Hazards
I usually just copy a trash Romance novel with a couple goblins included
Many years ago, an issue of Wizard magazine commented that most comic book plots were almost stolen from soap operas. You may be on to something there... Thanks so much for watching and following.
true!
What ive recently started doing is when the usual flakers can't make it, Me and the boys start playing Baldur's gate
I still don't even own that one yet. I own the older too. And Neverwinter nights. But I'm still financially at a point where I'm not quite able to grab that one I just got to get somebody to help me find a job and then I will. Probably by the Christmas time sale.
I agree with you As far as I know, steampunk and pulp both in the 19th century and revolve primary on steam operated machines
Thanks. Yeah, late 19th and early 20th. There seemed to be a sense of "oh, we can explore there!" That's why all the great Egypt/mummy stories, deepest-darkest Africa, hidden temples in Tibet kind of stories seem to take place in those eras. Of course, Solomon Kane is kind of an exception to that statement.
Ah, yes - the death spiral. It certainly puts players on the edge of their seats though.
More ick. That long ass list is about to come in handy
Very good advice! I'll be sure to be aware of player phobias (so I can exploit them)
This makes me think of C.S. Lewis, who had the quote “Children don’t need to be told that monsters exist, they already know monsters exist. What they need to be told is that monsters can be fought and overcome.” I like using horror in my stories as a DM, but I find often that I subscribe to the Lewis quote as well! I do like your idea here. For character death, I have often found it was beneficial to talk with the player to understand what they want from the death as well, and if they want the story to end here or if something needs to compel that character forward. I have found that the collaboration has worked well
Yeah, my D&D character went down with zero HP last night (stupid Tasha's Hideous Laughter combined with a racial ability that froze me in place until I got a 19 WIS save on a DEX-based character, followed by a stun and gang-up from two baddies!) and I was completely ready for him to die. I was even ready to grab my level 10 Knowledge Domain Cleric from my other game and bring him in. But, then my dice finally started rolling well on death saves, so I didn't lose my Ranger/Rogue (yes, I'm building Snake-Eyes, so what?) But, your comment has earned an entry for future topics for me to address. Thanks for watching and thanks for reaching out. Let's keep the conversations going!
I need that game
It's called Die Laughing. It's on DTRPG. www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/263554/die-laughing. Of course, me being myself, I'm going to Savage it. Thanks for watching!
The Nazis and the Arc of the Covenant!? 🤯 Do I need to watch the backstory movies here or can it be a standalone watch?
It's the first of the films. Made to feel like an installment in a series of films, like the old Buster Crabb Flash Gordon films. No background films needed. It's just good storytelling from George Lucas AND Stephen Spielberg. 1981.
My favorite advancement system is call of Cthulhu 7th edition
I'll have to take a look. One trait (unfortunate or not, depending on how I look at it) I possess is that I love collecting systems, especially at a macro-system level. But, call of Cthulhu... that one's always been a bit special. I wrote my Senior paper in college on Rats in the Walls and the way it displays how horror works in literature. I've been a Lovecraft fan for a long time. Thanks for the recommendation.
that's right 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for explaining this for me
💞💞💞
Yo Mason! I bought the Pathfinder for Savage Worlds core book, bestiary, power cards and action cards. Any tips for running with miniatures and terrain?
As for miniatures and terrain, still try to remember it's an abstracted game. But, those two tools do give a nice approximation of what is in front of the players. Sometimes I forget cover, and my players forget it too. If you have cover, you are going to find yourself a lot harder to hit. I always use my Chessex Battlemat more for the approximate layout. But, if we're, say, in a blacksmith's workshop, I'll give a benny to the Player who asks, "Can I take a pair of tongs off the wall to use in jamming the door to keep the zombie hoards out a little longer?" And my answer will be yes. So, don't stress over having too great of a map or terrain. Make sure they don't slow you up too much. But, if adding them in helps your players have a better time, then, by all means, include them.
I mean I played as a ranger one time and basically crafted a ghillie suit and sat myself on the hill about 120 feet away within range of my longbow while the rest of the party went off to talk to some guy that was suspected of something. Obviously it starts to go south and my character seeing it go south looses an arrow and get the guy clean in the head... In every tense social situation I was always watching on a nearby building or some hill with my makeshift bush cloak.
Nice! If you're a fan of history, you know how a well-placed arrow (not always to the knee), sometimes to the clavicle, can change history. I agree with Shad from @Shadiversity when he points out that the length of the bow didn't affect its poundage. My current ranger-rogue build is using a "longbow" for stats, but actually a short bow for maneuverability and for historical accuracy. It was the poundage of the bow, not its length that gave the penetration (damage) results.
@@acerpg Oh yeah I would of used a heavy crossbow with whole bunch of ghillie stuff over it because that would of been badass and that would of made more sense from a logical position too but the dnd rules are just a wee bit dumb but eh.
A young gal runs into the police station screaming, "GRAPE!!! GRAPE!!!!!" The desk sergeant quickly rushes to her aid, asking, "I'm sorry, but don't you mean rape?" "NO!!!" was the reply. "THERE WAS A BUNCH OF 'EM!!!" 🥁 ba-dum-bump 😒
I'd like to ask about your ceiling... My question is why?
Because, the house was built in 1975 and they thought it was cool. Which I don't agree with... Also they thought that this windowless room made a great bedroom. Which I also don't agree with. If it didn't act like a Faraday cage for my phone... I might like it better. When I get reemployed, and get some money, redoing this office is at the top of my list.
what does the hammer say to the primer. bang
Thank you! Thank you! I appreciate you taking a shot.
there is no way you just one upped my own gun joke 😂😂 that’s funny man
Every good dm/gm, can only hope they are helping to build a compelling game for everyone in their group. It can be a ton of work juggling story beats and plot hooks for 3 to 6 people at a time, but the pay off is always worth it when a player is in tears about loosing a beloved npc or literally jumping in excitement about finally getting to to find that one clue theyve been looking for
Exactly! Which is why I advocate for looking at the character sheet of EACH player character! That way you can see where they put their points and how they chose their Hindrances and Edges to tell you what kind of play they are after. Thanks for commenting!
If you want to give players a choice, give them a choice, not the illusion of a choice. You want them to fight the troll no matter what? The road is completely straight and has a troll on it, they can fight or sneak by. If they sneak by successfully, the troll chases them because the wind carries their scent. If you offer diverging paths, plan for diverging paths. Don't just make players feel like they have a choice to give them the illusion that it's not a railroad. A well-done railroad is always better than a railroad that's pretending not to be a railroad.
Ye
Besides, when the players have a choice, then choices have consequences. And when those consequences occur, they don't necessarily get to choose the consequence.
Lazy
Quantum Ogre-ing = Railroad Without Rails.
I will have to revisit my amusement park analogy for a longer video and that includes the fact that if the players choose not to interact with one piece of the amusement park that doesn't mean that that piece doesn't run it just means that they didn't interact with that piece. So they will need to suffer the consequences of not interacting with things.
That's good. It respects the agency and consequences of the players, and the agency of the ogre as well.
As there are consequences in the universe, the yogurt is a character that you as a GM portray. So, yes, he does get his own choice and ability to make choices as limited as you have to be managing so many other characters in the story and the world.
Nice idea, but I don't think modern dnd has the platform for it. Travel is a secondary platform as of 5e in my experience. If our present dm made travel a necessity to this point I think 4 of the 5 of us would bail. If the journey is just as hard as the battle, why would we play? There's no real reason to want to go through that If your players don't also go for it. Kinda just sounds like a DM got mad at his players. Or that their dm played skyrim
Fair enough! I'm just spitballing a lot of this, as, I usually fast-forward my travel times as well. Unless, between base and the capture point other horrible people are going to be shooting RPGs or other such attacks at us. Then, there's action in the environment, but it's now caused by characters, not just the environment itself. Truth be told, I liked in LotR where Cahathras was the malignant entity, not in the movies where, to make it action-packed, Sauruman cast spells and caused a major snowstorm. It felt contrived. But, maybe the story would have been just as strong if we'd hand-waved and said something like, PLAYER: Why are we at the gates to the Mines of Moria? I thought we were going over Cahathras... GM: Because the mountain turned out to be a bit of a malignant entity. Everyone roll your Vigor (or CON if playing D&D) and if you fail, take a level of bumps and bruises (or one level of Fatigue). ...hand waved!
this can go for all fantasy or story telling in general, not as like the thing everyone HAS to or SHOULD do but its cool and a nice idea, sad this doesnt have more views
Well, I thank YOU for viewing it. We can just all keep up the typical RUclips cycle of Subscribe-Like-Share. I am so clueless about what I'm actually doing here, other than showing up every day (most of the time) and making something I hope someone finds interesting. Keep watching, maybe, someday, I might actually do something as cool as @the_fat_electrician. But, until I do, know that it's my viewers who really are the cool ones.
They should make heroes redo their journey again. XD
Ooh! I love it! It's so evil!
Omg he's so cute 🫨🥰
That's a nice advice... But mine tends more toward one thing: Drop the alignment when it concern the inside mechanic of your team. Absolutes are absolutely disgusting when you look at he big picture and human relations in général. You are right about one thing here : Reward the amount of effort your player pour into their characters.
Honestly I like to keep my plots really simple, and keep the mystery simply by not telling them the rest of it OOC. The players will run around and find the clues with just as much joy for a simple plot then a complex one. And it lets me build more organically as they explore. The last game I ran the plot was "Dragon in the forest requires tribute from the city. Taxes are high, so prices are high. And no one knows why the usually kind governor is acting this way." My players first were outraged at the prices, then wanted wanted to fix some related subplot stuff, and ended up befriending the dragon. XD
The best stories come organically and grow throughout play. Sounds like you had a great time.
Glad to be here, brother.
I really like how the non-mechanical hindrances informs the 'who am I' of the character.
When we have too many choices, we sometimes don't know where to go. But, it is the kite string that keeps the kite aloft. Hindrances help us to have a lens through which to focus our minds and find a character with whom we can more readily connect and a focus for our play of that character.
absolutely!! Good work... make it work
100% - the Lazy DM suggests having both upbeats AND downbeats in games
But when do you use Boating???
When you are running a pirate game. Or Abyssal...
Thanks for sharing! I just ordered the Horror Companion and Pinebox Books, can't wait to check them out myself. A+ video! 👍
Lmao
lol Good one!
Thanks! You're wonderful. Don't forget to tip your waitress!
fair point
Thanks! I think I'll use that in my next champaign!
I don't like to hand off the player WITHOUT THEIR EXPRESS PERMISSION just in case that death type roll starts to happen
I can agree with that. I like to get that agreement in session zero, if I can.
You watch as (player) eyes go white and they become catatonic not responding to a single stimuli. Then u watch as they are surrounded by an orb that cannot be seen through or penatrated. Lol what i usually do
My bad guys usually end up dead, but I like to let my players describe what happened too.
I love that a lot of the heavy imaginary lifting that used to be all on the GM can be transferred to the players and that they become more part of the storytelling experience. It's our story, not mine as the GM.
Good one
Yes
That's kinda funny (new dad here)
Congratulations on being a new dad. Fatherhood is the second best thing I've ever done with my life. Marrying my wife to become that father was the first. Save up the dad jokes. You'll need them to make them groan in later teen years. My almost 20-year-old still hates them. Or more, he hates himself for laughing at them. I allow him to kick my bottom occasionally when the cringe is too high. But, it's only because I choose to allow it. I taught him everything he knows, but not everything I know. And age and treachery truly do win over youth and energy. Good luck in your dad journey. And thanks for tuning in.
@@acerpg Thank you. Being a dad (or parenting in general) is one of those things that you truly understand how hard it is only when you become one. It is hard yes, but also it's great. When I see my boy smiling, my heart melts and I even forget how tired I am. To keep that face smiling, I gotta start stacking those dad jokes for the future, haha. Wishing you and your family a great day
👍
😂😂😂
I think there's a good balance of using maps and theater of the mind. But it depends on your players, I guess.
Yeah. I discovered my personal, favorite balance while running on Foundry VTT: show an evocative picture that sets the mood, and let my players take it from there. I like the same in person, but will occasionally still break out my battlemat and wet erase markers to roughly sketch out a scene. But, my art is so atrocious that I once drew a house and it was immediately condemned. But, it can work.
You are worth watching.
Thanks. I'll work on continuing to improve and provide better content as I grow and move forward.
I can't be bothered to incorporate major bookkeeping burdens, so I generally don't bother with encumbrance or ammo tracking. With encumbrance, I just use common sense about whether someone can carry it or not. With ammo tracking, I'll do something ammo related on a Crit Fail or when a player is dealt a club and need a narrative complication.
For Savage Worlds ammo tracking, I usually run by the rule of Full > High > Medium > Low > Out, depending on the length of the combat. I'll also through out of ammo as an option for rolling a critical failure.
