Why SENUA'S SACRIFICE Deserved More Attention | Video Essay

🗡️ The greatest battles are not fought with the sword, but in the mind 🗡️ As I'm working up to recording the Annihilation essay, I decided to make a quick video essay about Senua's Sacrifice, which is a type of experience that no-one seems to be making anymore. It was nice to cover a video game on the channel again, although I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do this again just due to the work lo...

☀️ WHAT DO YOU SEE? ☀️ First of all, I apologize for the lazy lava lamp background. It was the only way I could get this thing uploaded. True Detective: Night Country - Not Enough Mystery
Просмотров 25 тыс.10 месяцев назад
I was extremely excited for Night Country. Not only do I love the setting and a shift in perspective (in protagonists as well as the show runner), but the early reviews also lauded it as a return to form. Unfortunately, Night Country has real issues in how it deals with its characters as well how little it focuses on its central mystery. Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 2:05 The Characters 7:47 Danvers 1...

PLEASE REMASTER DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS
Is it weird that I think about this game at least once per day? probably
Hotline Miami is the untold true story of Americas Mk ultra project and the long lasting impacts of it. It’s also about the weaponization of ideologies. 50 blessings is a direct parody of today’s ultra political groups. It’s happening now and it all ends the same. Unless you wake up. WAKE UP.
I often wonder if Hotline Miami hates us Russians or mocks those who do?
Great review. Signalis is a gem, both gameplay wise and if you are actually inclinded to delve deeper into story and implications they make.
Ever since I played Signalis, it instantly became one of my favorite games of all time, primarily for its narrative, story and world (right up there with Nier for me). I listen to the ost extremely often too. The music is incredible and it fits the mood beyond perfectly. The game is a masterpiece and the only problem that I have with it is that there isn't more of it. Great video.
Unless you get lost, completely broke the immersion on a few occasions
For me the game is hard. I've played for 4 hours and I feel exhausted. Winding through myriad enemies while bumping into locked doors, running back and forth with key items... it's just too much. Maybe it's because I'm new to the genre, but I feel like dropping it and watching a walkthrough. 😢
@@Alex5000148 Keep pushing! It'll feel all the better once you finish. Remember that you have unlimited saves as well-you can just always try again.
@@criticalcoffee I have finally beaten the game. It was very daunting, especially the "Nowhere" level, but definitely worth the effort. Thank you for the encouragement. I've even got some inspirations for my current worldbuilding project that has many similar themes. P.S. Also, hoarding ammo was a mistake, don't be like me, shoot the damn things!)
"I Can't Stop Thinking About Signalis" Those who sing the same song have heard it in their dreams. A dark tone, at the edge of hearing A silent voice, whispering to my heart: Come join us Together we will be eternal There is no escape We will be one. Welcome to the sea of flesh. :)
It’s really a 6/10 *game* but everything outside of the game play is so insanely good they elevate me past caring about how it feels to play anymore, and I’ve replayed it numerous times just to experience the narrative and art and music again. The simplified gameplay almost lends towards enjoying the story by not being too detracting from the narrative, and letting you really marinate while you go through the motions of combat
skill isue
"it is such a confident swing from a small developer," yes, absolutely. I had heard of the game, but I was not prepared for just how much down my specific alley of interests that it would be. Good video! if you're (the reader of this comment) interested in the game, this video doesn't really spoil anything except of course the portion about the Narrative. I'd recommend stopping after the 15 minute section or the Gameplay section if you're not really convinced but still interested.
Wait, it's possible to stop thinking about Signalis?
what barry says in the last clip: "i'm gonna have to kill cousinau." what subtitles said: "i'm gonna have to kill goose now." XD
I would love ryan gosling to be casted as jacket since I know he could pull it off
That last little bit where you’re curious why more people aren’t talking about this game, especially the lore and thematics, I can actually explain. Horror has a problem with mascots over message when it comes to long term existence of a piece of media. There isn’t anything wrong with this, it’s just a facet of fandom and even creation of media. People like to play with the mascots, and horror is really good at making mascots. Sadly horror at its best isn’t about mascots, but the message/feeling/thread the creator wanted to pull on. A game about the horrors of rape, and the system that not only allows it to happen, but elevates the abuser will eventually devolve into fans playing around with the characters like they’re dolls in a doll house (this is what’s happening to Mouthwashing right now). The message is harder to play with than the characters/mascots, and people want to play with the thing they like. This is why the genre of mascot horror is as big as it is because people have realized how long lasting a mascot can be, and are trying to utilize that for success. Signalis falls into this problem a little bit. It is a deeply profound sorrow song that is meant to be heard ever so slightly different by everyone. It is a story about queerness in an oppressive regime, the futility of an individual against the world, the horrors of failing your lover, the desperation of the oppressed, and many more things we could get into. It’s also a game about space lesbians and Replikas, these super cool interesting mascot like characters that you can play around with, and even make your own if you wanted. I love talking about the fact that no one has the exact same perceived story for this game, or that it takes inspiration from a writing community I’m apart of called the Empty Space Community. I understand though that now I’m in the minority because those that are in the fandom still have had these conversations already, and just want to play with the thing that makes them happy.
Interesting interpretation! I think for the most part, the conversations about the narrative, themes, characters etc. are held first and then (after it feels like the narrative is dissected completely), the other (doll house) side of the fandom starts to take over. Which is natural, there's only so much one can analyze about any given narrative without the discussion starting to go in circles. Many times the dollhouse side of the fandom is just more fun as well.
@ oh definitely. I will say I always enjoy seeing a fandom go through this shift. When those that have talked all they want go on to different topics it’s just the people that want to have fun with something that is close to them.
I can not lie... I came to this video like ten times...
I completely agree! Firewatch is such a beautifully crafted game that blends stunning visuals, a hauntingly atmospheric soundtrack, and a deeply emotional story. It deserved so much more recognition for its unique approach to storytelling and the way it made the player connect with its characters. The subtle themes of isolation, loss, and human connection really stuck with me long after playing. It's a gem that more people should experience!
I just wish this game got it's own artbook
On the other hand, Jodi Foster certainly has aged gracefully......
After replaying this game there's still some moments where the game makes me cry 😢 the music didn't help either 😢
The exact same thing happened to me after playing this game I've never played a game like this before
In terms of difficulty, you are correct that it is subjective. Having played no games in this genre before Signalis (Resident Evil with its spider obsession, and Silent Hill is just way too much for someone who doesn't struggle with immersion), I found the first playthrough very challenging on Casual. By now (a second playthrough done) I can do it on Survival, except for the annoying fight with Falke (the visual noise makes it impossible to avoid her projectiles at times, and the fight is way too long to bother with this considered).
Okay! Interesting to hear this perspective as well. I can imagine that the inventory system especially is punishing without prior experience with the genre.
@@criticalcoffee Yes, on the first playthrough I switched to the "Extended" option (8 slots + slot for the torch). On the second, however - remembering where everything is - I had no issues with just the 6 classic slots. On Survival, I found healing items extremely scarce - because the damage received greatly increased, and the healing decreased at the same time. Furthermore, I reached the end of the game with almost no ammo left - the last combat encounters turned into puzzles of "which one-shot solution is applicable here?". The worst room in the entire game, however, is the "Kolibri corridor" at Nowhere - Kolibris are the worst design as a whole (what with the unavoidable damage and visual pain), and there it is combined with Storch right next to you.
I would watch 3 hours of you explaining the narrative. The game stood with me too after I finished it and I like how you talk.
heh, thank you! I already mentioned this in another comment, but I would highly recommend checking out Indie Xplorer's two videos on Signalis. They did an amazing job at explaining the story.
Would i recomend this game to everyone? Yes. But... i gotta give them a warning.. how truly sad the game can be to the point it can change your life..
Signalis is truly special to me, it completely changed me and left me with a giant hole in my heart. That being said it's a game that absolutely everyone should experience at least once
I really really liked this video. Though I understand why you wouldn't delve into making a 3-hour analysis, I would love to watch it (especially if you talked about cosmic horror hehe, not gonna lie, knowing your channel I thought it was going to be the main point of the video). Thank you for your work and for showing us tiny moments like the red boat (never noticed it!!) that, usually, don't even appear in the other big videos!
Thanks for watching! There are many excellent videos already on the topic so I didn't want to retread old ground. I would highly recommend Indie Xplorer's story breakdowns: ruclips.net/video/x1Gv8yjEXw8/видео.htmlsi=p0g-FZ5wRnn3S9Ps
i was NOT expecting to suddenly hear finnish
me now, realizing that you, in fact, are from finland:
I promise that this isn't a paid sponsorship with game pass lol
Me too it been like two years and i have downloaded sum of the ost and form here and there i go back it never faded of my mind but i kinda like it it is a testment to how good it is .
Ahh the the girl boss is definitely a fantasy, but idk about a horror lol
I actually prefer NOT to use the motion tracker when I play. It makes it more fun and challenging, so disagree on that point
13:40 maybe this was to show that even past death, area X isn’t done with the “material”? Still mutating things that we deem useless once dead. Literal Ouroboros 🤔
If the dolphin could have been her husband, what was the owl then?
the shimmer reminds me of the Black Garden
Sensors are used for the Molotov, because i can be place down to use as a motion activated explosive device.
Personally I've always wondered about hotline miami mini series, specifically for something like Hotline miami 2 where every episode we follow a new character and at the end said character is killed and the next episode follows the killer, basically punishing you anytime you get attached
No man that’s some sopranos level spooky
I actually noticed this when watching and asked my wife if she saw who was in the back and she had no idea and for some reason it wasn't letting me rewind to show her, now I'm going to have to send her this.
8:19 Sir Alex Ferguson?
So let me get this straight. Jody foster told the writer hey when you write my dialogue have me say racist shit and be an ass hole......uh huh, sure....what a counterfeit gang of grotesques these people are.
I wrote a long paragraph to why i respectfully disagree with your views this game but i somehow miss-clicked and lost it so I'm gonna just say STFU. if you want my opinion then let me know.... BTW sorry for being rude XD
He is also the grocery worker who got his face headbutted by Ronnie back in season 2.
I played it yesterday for first time. And didn't want a video about it til after it
If the show was just called Night Country with no call backs to S1 it would have just been a fine tv mystery. Forcing it to fit in TD was just terrible.
I think Hotline Miami 1 and 2 should be a show in chronological order in my opinion
Coming back here after Alien Isolation 2 was announced. Let's hope they get the immersion right again.
I've seen people praise this movie and at least 2 of my friends recommended it. I'll read the book first though.
I absolutely agree; personally, I think this reflects cosmic horror more than some of the more literal Lovecraftian movies like Underwater. While you note you're cherry-picking, I might suggest this has a vibe similar to At The Mountains of Madness - the horror is large, but contained to a small group. At the end of the story, we're not instantly concerned the shoggoth is coming for all of earth right then. One man survives and while probably traumatized, he's not mad, while the other sees the final horror. I think Capa's experience of the sun as something scary and enticing but ultimately ending in a final awesome (awe-inspiring) blaze does not negate the horror. When one considers the Elder Things, they are terrifying but also awesome. The sun subsuming Capa is both beautiful and horrifying. And yes, the ending is "happy," but fewer people make it out (none) than there in At the Mountains of Madness; our cast of characters does not meet a happy end.
Best game ever made
Literally beat this game yesterday
I think the ending also shows all these other people barry has killed. Has had a life aswell. Complex like barrys. Just cut unexpectedly. No resolve no figuring out there peace. Ended then and there. Gone forever
i have played this 2014 2 times on ps4/ps5 and really like it too #AlienIsolation #SEGA
