Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass: "The Mexican Shuffle"....in Stereo?? [Sample]
"The Mexican Shuffle" has always been a monaural track, even with some "fake stereo" applied to the stereo LP. But now, there is a stereo version available.
How is this possible?
www.ericrecords.com/htf_StereoExpl-10.html
This track is one of the new "revectored" mono-to-stereo simulations. For what it is, it sounds pretty darned good and nearly accurate (although the bass is vaguely centered vs. being in the drum/percussion channel, which could be a technical issue with the process).

Still comforting and joyful after all these years! Great compilation of artists.
I'd listen to this album religiously, even if it wasn't the holiday season ❤❤

I just need Mexican Shuffle. Can I get a wave file of that?
I have the album. It’s tough to find a decent copy.
Such a good recording for 1966. We should return to vacuum tubes. Born with strabismus ( crossed eyes) my parents put a pillow on the floor and played the reel to reel copy of this album while I rolled left and right to the music. Of late, I composed, played and recorded about forty tunes, mostly rock and fusion jazz.
It's great! Anything with Julius Wechter's marimba is magical. This one casts a romantic spell and would be good to put on when you bring a date home.
I thought I heard the Woody Woodpecker song (#9). It's been a long time. This music is still as relevant and enjoyable as ever. Thanks, A&M.
❤
Que grande la baja marimba... Yo tenia casi todos los discos...
For 50 years I´ve liked BMB´s HEADS UP!!. For 50 seconds I´ve been enjoying WATCH OUT!!
Una de mis bandas favorirtas... son geniales..!!!!
A wonderful album by Pete Jolly with great arrangements by Marty Paich, played by L.A.'s top musicians ...
Julius Wechter's group was always a bit more anarchic than Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass but just as good...
I wish they would make this album available on Spotify.
I was thinking the same thing.
I have the album, but not a working vinyl player. I can remember this from WMAZ-FM in Macon, Georgia when I was stationed there while in the Air Force in 1968-70.
Can anyone list in the cpmments the tracklist? Cant figure out track after herb albert sleightrid and also the last track with the nice vocals and trumpet
I can take a listen later and make a track list. I tried listing the tracks in the video description but then it was flagged and removed. I deleted the track listing and the video was reactivated. RUclips is fickle that way.
Thanks for this , forgot all about this band. Bought all their and Alpert's albums in the sixties when they were both smokin hot. Comparing them now, I think the BMB has a more diverse and interesting sound.
Possibly BMB's best album. So good-the ability to juxtapose fast paced with subtle, slower numbers was something they excelled at. Julius was a genius.
Hi! I have this record, the original US release. It was one of the first records I ever bought about 10-15 years ago as I started looking around thrift shops and antique stores, having been given a record player. I saw a jazz group and decided to take a chance for $1.00. It's only recently I found out that it is rare and might be the most valuable record in my collection! Anyway, I just checked and my copy does not have the tape "glitches" you've shown here. Seems like another video on RUclips has the US release audio and it's like mine, no glitches. Just thought I'd add that info.
Thanks for confirming that. I don't listen to the record enough to find a replacement, but I had a feeling that those glitches were limited to this Japan release vs. the original Us pressing. There is also now a CD release but I believe they also made it from a needle drop, and the tracks I sampled did not sound good at all. So you have a true rarity!
So great… thanks for posting this!
Lo máximo!!!!!
This is my grandfather's album. His inspiration in my life runs deep. He is one of the purest reasons I am a musician myself.
my mothers collection. along with a few Grants issues, and a 1960 acme markets one
Thank you for sharing this! My absolute favorite Christmas album. My father purchased this in the 60s. Somehow it got damaged and lost. You’ve made my holiday!
merry christmas my friend 🎄what a great album
My family had this album when I was a kid of the 60's & 70's. I loved it during the holidays, and I actually have it now.
My favorites are The Bell That Couldn't Jingle and Snow. I still have this album. Have always loved it.
What year was this album released? 1968?
Correct! 1968, and it was sold through the BF Goodrich tire stores.
My favorite Christmas album ever. ❤
Missing a mark for the most beautiful song on the album: This Time Tomorrow 17:35
Herb's music sounds .. no .. feels like a wish. Those key-changes are so emotional. Followed his music from TJB to 80s solo then lost touch. Route 101 a few yrs later has a similar emotional effect
Can't quite agree with the comparison to Route 101, he's not there yet. This album is somewhat of a weird departure from the old TJB but still holds on to most of the same song structure/arrangement. It feels lost, like Herb was trying to find his way in the new world of Contemporary Jazz but refused to let go. It's the next album with Hugh Masekela that he gets fully pushed into the late 70s. And then of course we all know what happened with the LP Rise.
Hidden gem. Just put this on a Christmas mix!
I have this on an 8-track and it's in beautiful stereo.
Which tape is this on? From the album, or one of the hits compilations?
I think it was "Herb Alpert's Greatest Hits", on an 8-track cartridge. I'd have to look, I think I still have it somewhere. Was one of those "get a dozen tapes for a penny" RCA record club deals in 1976.@@AMCorner
I don't understand why A&M (herb was part owner) would record this mid-60's tune in monaural when stereo records had well been established in the late 50's. BTW, A&M had an extraordinary recording studio, their masters were some of the best. 45 RPM records were basically designed for AM radio stations so they were always mono except for the 1959 to 1961 experiment by Bell Canto, but it failed to catch on. Stereo 45's came back in 1968 for most popular labels except for Arista, Bell, and London, which remained mono until 1975. Here are some statistics for songs making the Billboard top 40 (of the Hot 100). The following percentages are the commercial 45s that appeared in stereo each year. 1975: 95.6% 1974: 93.8% 1973: 74.8% 1972: 51.9% 1971: 35.7% 1970: 26.9% 1969: 19.1% 1968: 3.1%@@AMCorner
Herb and Jerry Moss didn’t buy the A&M lot until 1966. Mexican Shuffle was recorded in 1964 at Gold Star Studios. It was typical to release both mono and stereo versions of LPs at that time since a lot of the public didn’t have stereo equipment back then. As I understand it the stereo mix of the song was lost or misplaced at the time. No one really knows for sure what happened. But the mono mix ended up on the LP.
