Highlights of Mourning Doves from Eggs to Fledgling Chicks
Просмотров 213 тыс.2 года назад
Highlights (from many hours of video) of a pair of mourning doves as they raise their chicks and send them off. See the parents raise a brood of chicks (squabs) and encourage them to leave the nest. During the first 14 days, both parents take turns sitting on the two eggs, with almost constant occupation of the nest. And then during the next 14 days, both parents will feed the squabs by bringin...
Watch mourning dove nesting and the chicks get their first feeding

Here is a close up view of mourning doves in the wild and how they interact to incubate and then raise a brood of chicks. I believe that the mourning doves do communicate with each other as they take turns incubating the eggs and then feeding the nestlings. This video covers the first 15 days from when the second egg is laid to when they hatch and get their first feeding from both the mom and d...

Watch House (Purple) Finch chicks hatch, grow up and escape disaster!
Просмотров 206 тыс.4 года назад
So this is the last of a series of videos of the House Finch birds. I put together key moments during the 5 weeks when the House Finches make a nest, lay the eggs, and raise the six chicks until they are able to fly away on their own. This is almost all new footage (not a repeat of my previous videos) of the birds and chicks. You'll see the mother House Finch prepare the nest, lay the first egg...
House Finch Chicks Outgrowing the Nest (Day 10)
Просмотров 3284 года назад
All six chicks are growing up and seem to be eating constantly. The mom and dad House Finch parents are frantically taking turns making food runs from dawn to dusk. The chicks now range in age from 10 to 6 days old and seem to be as big as their parents! And now the mom doesn't even fit on the nest with the chicks!
House Finch Chicks Have Hatched (Day 6)

Yaay, all the eggs have hatched! Oh no, now there are 6 more mouths to feed! Watch this video of the House Finch parents trying to keep up with their growing brood! The feeding schedule has been arduous with the House Finch birds feeding the chicks about twice an hour from dawn to dusk. The mother will tend to stay with the chicks but both the male and female will go out and bring back food for...
Day 3 for House Finch chicks

A fourth House Finch bird hatches and competes for food I've been watching two House Finch birds diligently make a nest and then lay 6 eggs. The female bird has been patiently incubating the eggs for the last two weeks and three days ago the first two chicks hatched. During the next two days, two more chicks were hatched with the fourth one just hours ago. Take a look for those who are interested!
First meal for two House Finch chicks that just hatched - Gary's Backyard video

Two newborn House Finches are eating for the first time. Watch the red-colored male feed the female house finch who in turn will feed the chicks. Even though the chicks cannot see yet, they know that the food is there and eat up! This is day 1 for the two House Finch chicks. I took the picture of the eggs the day before and since it had been 14 days since the first egg was laid, I knew that the...
Que. Linda. Familia. 😂😂😂
I had a family of mourning doves nest in a small evergreen tree next to the front door this past summer, it was cute watching them grow up 💖🕊🕊 I miss them, but I hope the nest gets reused again next year! I still get plenty of doves in my backyard as I have a feeder, and I'm pretty sure one of the juveniles that came from the nest still visits frequently 😊
Thanks for this video! I was riveted the entire time. For the past couple of months I've been feeding doves that come to my window sill and it's fascinating to watch them. I have a question that I'm hoping you could answer -- I've seen some young doves feeding, and whenever there's an older adult around, the young ones make peeping sounds and flutter their wings. Does this mean something? And sometimes the older adults try to chase them away from the food, but that could just be territorial behavior, I don't know if they're related.
Hi Gary. Thank you so much for this informative video. I am helping to rehabilitate a lost dove and this content helped me assess the stages of his/her development. You have lifelong fan in me.😊
Aww thank you so much for your comment - glad that it has been helpful!
Wow great video. Love my doves wish i could see their nest!
what camera or equipment did you use to capture this? I have a nest and its too late to add a camera but I use a tripod and shoot as close as I can and have gotten some good images- would love to have a running video of this all transpiring...
I just used a simple security camera - nothing fancy
I love this video. The 2nd next my pair had had one baby that didn’t seem ready to go. I watched as the two would hop out of the nest, then fly a short distance, but quickly came back. The next day only one was left. I tried talking to the lone baby and said I know you can do it. I was worried maybe he couldn’t but I knew he had flown before. Apparently I scared him a bit and he took off to a nearby trailer, then to the roof, and now who knows…I’m sure he's one of the 30 that come for morning feedings I provide.
How do u feed your doves?
@@jeffrey4505 There’s a stucco wall between my property and the next. It has 20” squares every 10”. I go out and pour some food on about 5 of them. They flit around until they’ve scarred it all down. It’s amazing how fast they are. I’m going to try putting water out in a shallow Tupperware dish at the same time. There’s no water around unless they fly to the lake. That’s a 15-20 minute car drive.
@@KrisD007 I want to do that. Is birdseed expensive? I’m afraid of attracting mosquitos!!
@@jeffrey4505 Yesterday I saw a 20lb bag of wild birdseed at Ace Hardware for $10. It’s a special deal because when I went it was $15. Mosquitoes are awful. We don’t have any that I notice unless we go down by the lake in the evening. I’m in Arizona.
I love this video. I rarely get to see the chicks that have been in 3 nestlings now. I’d love to set up a camera but it’s so hot here, not sure it would well or I could find a way to attach it while they are gone. What camera do you use? Thank you very much.
I just used a security camera
I just had a family of Doves in a nest outside of our window. I just loved watching their moves and growth each day. I hope they come back for a 3rd or more brood to watch! Thank you for this video!
Umetnost😍😍😍❤
Interesting fact!! Post fledge mom & dad continues feeding fledglings for 2-3 weeks. My backyard has been the training grounds for many generations of house finches as well as house sparrows. They are attentive parents. The fledglings will follow the parents mimicking their behaviors and when they are in want of a meal they open their mouths and do this little “shake/wiggle” with their body or wings it’s absolutely precious. I have some ornamental trees planted in whiskey barrels that they hide/play/learn to wipe their beaks etc.. it’s truly the best thing to watch! Now they are not fed by parents but they are “juveniles”.. they are at my window feeders but mom & dad still keep a watchful eye… they will watch from the tree or the pergola and if things get out of hand or if I make a sudden move in the window that appears as a threat to them (as it should- and not done on purpose), they do what they do and the kids fly just above to the roof.. I can see them peek over the gutter 😂… When you retire- watch birds… set up your backyard for the birds and open your curtains!!!
@sonjam4606 Thanks for that information!
Thank you for this video, I have a cam on one currently but it’s not the best angle. When the eggs first started hatching the mom startled when my husband opened the front door early in the morning (the nest is high up on my porch) when she took off a newly hatched baby must have been stuck to her and fell to the cement below. I gently scooped it up and placed it back in the nest, it was moving its mouth open slowly but I don’t know if it made it or not. There were 5 eggs initially and I can only count 4 baby’s, it’s day 11.
Ohh sorry to hear that!
I just found a nest under my porch . One baby was hatched today and 3 more eggs waiting to hatch
So they are probably getting ready to leave the nest soon!
❤❤
I have a nest in the top corner of my porch. Today, I noticed that a baby (not sure how old but def stretching wings but not yet able to fly), and I'm not sure if it fell out of the nest or what to do. There is one in the nest that seems to be a bit bigger than the one on the porch. There has been a parent every day in the nest except today but have been close. Do I leave the baby on the porch (it found a safe spot under a table on my porch) and has been cuddled up there since I noticed it out of the nest. Do I leave it or put it back in the nest?
Sorry I haven't responded earlier but hopefully the little one recovered and was able to fly away. I know that first outing can be precarious until they can fly confidently.
@garysbackyard2517 is ok both were gone the next day, and now we have a new mourning dove in the nest now
@@melaniephillips8556 I’ve been told by rehabbers to wear gloves if I need to put a baby back in the nest. They also say the parents will make sure they are fed, it’s just a matter of being safe on the ground. I love my nesters!
@@deadengine I just left it be and it was good
Great video! These are House Finches. Purple Finches are a completely different bird.
Thanks for the info!
I love this so much!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
These finches have just nested on my porch lamp and we don’t have the heart to take it down. Looks like it’s going to be a mess to clean it up with all the poop by the end of your video! Maybe we will try hanging a flower basket as some others have done.
We just had a couple start making a nest in our living room behind our bar on the shelf, one of them stays on a tall lamp, and the other one is behind there in the nest. They’re making they go back-and-forth all day. They’re so beautiful and their routine and communications they have with each other we decided to let it be, I’ve just now been researching to see how long it takes for the eggs to hatch our houses very clean so this is out of the ordinary to have birds just flying around in it but it’s part of nature and it’s beautiful
Wow that is amazing - you are getting an upfront and peraonal view of their life! I’m surprised that they stay in the same room with you!

Wow, thanks for the comment!
2 days ago, there was a mourning dove in my garage (Day 13 size). It was flying all around the garage, but not getting out. Initially, I thought it was a big bird and let her out. But she had a small flight and sitting in my front yard, couldn't fly higher. Then googled and found it is baby and immediately went and took her back inside. Baby is not eating by herself, so I need to boil grains and grind them and fed her. Not sure what to do now. To leave her outback or to grow her until she is big and change it to an adult color.
Hopefully the baby dove survived! Sorry I don't have experience with taking care of baby birds!

What happened? I’m in a Facebook group about mourning doves but this video is the best.
This is so cute! I have a couple with their babies outside my window on the fire escape.. I couldnt help it and had to touch them when they were alone🥹 Theyre about 9-10 days but Idk how theyll learn to fly here theres no trees or bushes just fire escapes and the garage😕
So did they all fly away yet?
Did the parents come back after you touched them?
@@garysbackyard2517 Sorry I just saw your comment and YES! The mom and dad taught them how to fly from fire stairs to fire stairs until they flew away🥰
@@deadengine Yea they did! Theyre very dedicated and start to leave their babies alone little by little so they can start getting used to be by themselves I think.
Excelente video.
Gracias!

Sometimes I just wonder if they ever meet or reunite somewhere after they all leave the nest.
I bet they do; there was a mourning dove hanging around the old nest recently!
I have over 30 that visit me in the morning after I put out food. I swear if I had feeders, it would all be gone in a day. It’s so hot here, I’m sire it’s hard for them to find any. Especially water. I’m trying to figure out how to get a little water for them but it’s over 115 here for the summer. I could keep putting ice cubes in it
@@KrisD007 Have you tried finding a way you could shade the water? So it's not in direct sun?

I have a family of 10-12 house finches who live in my garage. The only predators that can get them are humans. The garage door is cracked enough so they can leave if they choose to. Every night however, as soon as the sun starts to set, however many birds flew out of the garage during the day returns to the garage in the evening. I don't know if they will mate and lay their eggs in the garage come spring, but I am stocking up on terracotta pots and straw/nesting material for them so I'm crossing my fingers. That way, the parents won't have to worry about predators.
Hey that's great - if you remember let me know how that works out!
This is beautiful. I didn't know the male was so involved with taking care of the babies.
Thank you for watching!
A literal "The Birds and the Bees," story, without the bees. Nature in action. And yes, that was a Scrub Jay.
Thanks for watching!
My budgie has made friends with the house finches who visit the feeder outside her window. She has learned a version of their call and utters a sharp whistle to call them over when she hears them down the street at their house. I hope they don’t go away and leave her bereft!
How interesting and smart bird too!

We had one for about 4 months. Rescued her from sidewalk and couldn’t find the nest or parents. Hand fed her until she could feed herself and we let her fly around the house. She was so smart and followed us everywhere. Then one day she decided to escape and flew out the door and was gone. We miss her, but we know we saved her life. Hope to see her again sometime.
Oh that is such a nice story! Maybe she'll come back and raise a brood of her own!
