holey crap! its clean
@@EmmaRitson makes a big difference. Took a while to clean up using acetone.
I didn't get a chance to watch them as they came out sorry dude, Merry Christmas!
@@RSPYT no worries. The playlist is there for anyone that wants to go back and check them out. I have updated the tiles to contain the content for those that want to pick and choose.
Shame they stopped making them 😲
You made it! Well done. I need to clear my benches, unfortunately I've got so many "in progress" projects that it'll take me to next Christmas to tidy them. Merry Christmas T&B 🎄
@@ollysworkshop thanks. It was a mission. It was fun but haven't decided if it was worth it yet. Hope to see you put out advent 2025 and show us all how it is done.
Tidy! Happy Xmas 🙂
@@irvb9881 thanks Irving. You too.
OMG you said my name! merry Christmas and a happy new year to you too ❤
@@Peter_Nottle thanks. You too. 🙂
Merry Christmas!! It’s been so much fun to watch your videos this year! I look forward to seeing what you have in store for 2025!! x
@@ajourneytolove ❤️
I’d like to have a clear bench, but I’d need another bench to put all the clutter on 🤦🏼♂️
@@modellingmark I agree. Not sure mine will stay clear for long. I need to tidy the rest of the workshop now.
This is brilliant! You could make a whole set of farmyard animals or even a zoo. The possibilities are endless! 😅
This brings back memories of you as a young boy playing for hours with your clicker boat. Had to get you several new ones as you burnt them out. Happy days. x
I've not seen these either!
@@irvb9881 they are not as common as I thought then.
I’ve not seen one of these before. They are very fun. Do you think there would be any difference in run time, speed etc if the water was warm vs cold? See you tomorrow!! x
@@ajourneytolove I would think cold water works better.
@ have you tried using warm water?
@@ajourneytolove I have not. Something we can play around with.
well, that was out f left field. not seen those before.
@@Peter_Nottle oh really. Thought they were fairly common hence skipped the explanation on how they work as it would be boring.
@@tandb always interested in what makes things work
@@Peter_Nottle expansion of water when it boils and then contracting again as the liquid moves out of the flame. Very similar to the Stirling engines really.
@@tandb ever thought of modifying/improving it?
@Peter_Nottle yes.
That's a fun little thing. You should have welded a little pile of nuts to put next to him 💩
He’s so adorable! I think you should call him Scrappy! See you tomorrow!! x
NUTS! you did it, well done
@@Peter_Nottle 🙂
@@tandb 🙃
i have no complaints... 😲
Good save with the JB weld! I would have been thinking about how to machine away the error, but that would probably have had it's own issues.
@@ollysworkshop I think you are correct. There is enough spare material to bring down all of the machined surfaces to bring those holes into spec. Anything below that point is just engine base. Potentially flywheel clearance would become an issue easily resolved with a cut out in a wooden mounting base for the engine.
That JB weld is a versatile tool, isn’t it? Nice fix!! See you tomorrow! x
@@ajourneytolove a must for every home.
The engine is coming along nicely. I have a casting kit like that, but is to scared to build it yet. Nice save. Good work
@@RustyInventions-wz6ir I started with the Stuart models oscillating kit. The kit and the spares are cheap enough to feel like messing up is an option. Keep trying parts until they work. I learned a lot from that which has given me the confidence to try this kit. Have a think about low lost options for practicing each skill you need for your kit. Learn by doing is my theory and you learn even more by the mistakes. It helps to have a decent online community to help hence I am on Emma's spare room machine shop discord channel.
Nice save! Exactly how I would have done it!
@@modellingmark Thanks. It worked better than I expected. Now to finish the model and see if I can actually get it to run.
The steps on the displacer cylinder are likely for cooling (as well as styling). There needs to be a temperature difference between each end. Looks like the flame licks the aluminium, it may work even better if the flame just licks the end of the glass tube. As you have a motor attached, it would be interesting to see if you end up with a cold and a hot end of the displacer if you power the motor.
@@ollysworkshop I had not considered the extra area for cooling. Even the piston side gets very hot fairly quickly despite the two areas being separated by the tube. Will have to experiment and see if I can optimise it further.
seems you have caught the "bug" good luck with that 😁
I’m obviously not a machinist, so this question may be quite obvious to you and others, but could this kind of set up be used to power something that actually moves? See you tomorrow! x
Potentially.
Was it invented by someone ( Mr Sterling ? ). It may not be very powerful but fun to watch. Interesting video.
I've got one of those. I broke it when I wanted to see how fast it would go, so put it on top my log burner. It ran really quickly, until the foam piston and perspex cylinder melted!
@@ollysworkshop yeh looks a bit melty. Maybe a chamber added on top full of ice water and hot water under would be faster. Maybe a video idea for the next advent series.
Very nice work. I have just finished my engine like that a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoyed building it. Looking good.
@@RustyInventions-wz6ir I really hope I can get them all working without too much adjustment.
it's powered by the temperature difference, ie. ΔT = T2 - T1
Indeed. I think ice to ambient would be about 26 and ambient to hot water would be about 80 roughly. Although it was not directly touching the hot water I imagine the steam is a great method of heat transfer.
@@tandb try ice to blowtorch😄😁🤣😂
Nice little engine. It was interesting to see how it works and seems to run for a very long time. See you tomorrow! x
hmmm... 🤔 not the most powerful engine 🤷♂
If i replaced the foam displacer with an aluminum one and replaced the hot water with a blow torch it might be a different story.
@@tandb i doubt it, they were never a tourquey engine
@@Peter_Nottle indeed but Stirling engines can drive light weight accessories.
@@tandb give me a thumping V8 or electric engine any day
okay. keyboard replaced, rewatching, now i will comment....
Hi, that's a fun little gadget, one was to get a bit more driving force for the ice would be to add salt and crush the ice to depress the freezing point
Indeed. I didn't want salt on my model so I added water as an attempt to make more surface area contact.
considered anodizing them?
I did but I am not set up for that yet. Currently the options are paint or bare metal.
That project is coming along quite nicely! See you tomorrow! x
ruclips.net/video/uST7iJgC_gs/видео.html&pp=ygUSY2xpY2tzcHJpbmcgYmx1aW5n
That's a neat idea, I'll have to try that. I also don't feel very comfortable drilling and modifying things, but sometimes it's a necessary evil, fitting a DRO for instance.
@@ollysworkshop I do have a DRO to fit at some point. I am considering gluing the brackets on. Shouldn't be in a position where it will fall into the chuck so I don't see the harm in trying it.
I did find that interesting! It’s a brilliant solution. I hope to see the improvement that you spoke of in an upcoming video! See you tomorrow! x
stick to it mate 😉❤👍
I'll be interested to see you get this one working. Doesn't look too complicated, so should be fun 👍
@@ollysworkshop yeh I will get it sorted.
Display model… I bet your wife loves that. 👀😳😂 See you tomorrow!! x
cant fix it? "I'ts a display model" 😜
It will be fixed in the new year. I thought another episode of this engine in the series would be pushing it a bit.

dag nab it, now you're just taunting me 🤦♂
@@Peter_Nottle me? Never. 🙂
@@tandb 🤨
Multistory carparks are the best!
What a brilliant thing to do! As for batch manufacturing? I'm making Lady Stephanie, and I'm getting fed up with making the 6 columns!!
@@modellingmark I don't mind so much on the lathe. But multiple set ups on the milling machine with multiple tooling changes really starts to drag.
masochist, is a word that comes to mind 🤔
I have to agree!😂 Half way now T&B, are you still enjoying it?
@@ollysworkshop yes all good fun. Not easy trying to be entertaining. Still a few ideas short for the series and now I am sick. Hope you will be doing advent 2025 as missing your videos this year.
