Good afternoon Brothers, I am a committed listener and enjoy your leadership podcast very much! A thought on some things shared in this episode: while discussing the formation of his new lodge, one guest explained that he couldn't create culture around the name "Huntington". He shared that he (essentially) took the lifeblood from various lodges (in the form of brothers who had good ideas, embraced the notion of change, and were known workers). He added that brothers used to joke about leaving and "starting their own thing". I don't understand why they weren't able to change the culture from the inside? What prevented those brothers from working just as diligently to effect culture by embracing those same ideas that they took to their lodge UD? I'm sure there were some people resistant to change but no worthwhile endeavor is easy. Were they simply too severely outnumbered? I heard him say that when he got push back concerning some of his ideas certain others had to walk him back from the ledge, he intimated he'd contemplated quitting. It never feels good when our ideas and efforts are not embraced or well-received, but I also know that walking away is not what's in everyone's best interest - it's like the kid at recess who takes his ball and goes home because he wasn't picked first for the team. I shudder to think of the condition of Prince Hall Masonry in America if brothers would leave The Lodges they'd committed to because their ideas and efforts were not received, or if they didn't move in a fashion that they thought they should, or if there was internal strife in their lodge. These are things to work through, not flee from. It was telling, the final question about what one might change if they went back to the east in their lodges. The brother commented that he would do something to strengthen and bring back unity, and the face of trial that Unity is what might have kept him add Huntington or whichever Lodge instead of breaking off. There was a time when people couldn't get what they wanted in the lodges they belonged to and they splintered off to form entire sects of freemasonry such as International and four-letter lodges. Splintering off is never the answer in my opinion. Lastly, I extend condolences to you, your jurisdiction, and most importantly the family of your dearly departed brother Kareem.
