AL is not for everyone especially for those that grew up in very large cities, NE or West Coast states. AL is made up of many small towns and 4 larger cities. It is for those that are very family oriented with schools, community and church being the center of their lives. It is a red state, conservative and laid back. If your comfort zone is a big city lifestyle, AL is not for you. I have seen people come and go over the years, the ones that stay are usually from small towns, other Southern states or the Midwest. I have lived here my entire life, 68 years, grew up and lived in a large city, now live in a small town, not far from Wetumpka.

EJI's National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Legacy Museum and Freedom Sculpture Park are drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. They, along with the Whitewater Park, are what's relevant and sparking the economic development today.

I was born in Wetumpka hospital in 1969 & grew up in Slapout (near the Church filmed in Big Fish movie). My ancestors & my friends ancestors were among the earliest settlers in the area. I have SO MANY memories in this area but a couple favorite ones were going in the top level of the old courthouse daily with my Daddy(RIP) when the Sheriff’s Department was located up there (he was a Deputy) & after heading to Little Sam’s Cafe (near Frios) & Western Auto (across from the old Chicken Shack beside Coaches Corner). I remember going in the First National Bank on the corner & every other store front in “downtown” area. I also grew up listening to stories about Wetumpka from my 92 year old Mother, she said after long weeks of working the fields with her sharecropper family they would all get a Quarter (for field work) head to the Fain Theater & sit there all day watching the same movie over & over because the building was nice & cool (not sure if the building had ac or what lol). are many beautiful areas in & surrounding Wetumpka. Proud to call Sweet Home Alabama /Wetumpka my home.🤩

I noticed that you did not make your video very lengthy which is awesome, because people (these days) do have short attention spans. (LOL) Also, another pro (in my opinion). For those those history buffs out there. Montgomery, is a historic and civil rights city. With a lot of museums and tours that can be taken in the city's downtown that will commensurate the two. Also, the city has historic colleges like Huntingdon College and Alabama State University with is a HCBU that also has several sporting events as well.

This is nice, sir. As a 17 year resident I wanted to add perspective, and have responded to a few comments below. Like any city, we do have some struggles with crime and drugs at times, and waves in the economy always hit the South later than the East and West Coasts, so we tend to have economic struggles and recoveries that don't completely align with other areas. But, I think, our city is a hidden gem, especially for smart creative young people, families and singles, to come and connect and make the city blossom. I mean those who want to be involved, and bring people together, and build things, not just be passive consumers or remote impersonal real estate investors. Come and *live* here. You can find the silver lining in things that others dismiss - even the climate, for example, allows me to garden almost year round (tomatoes in December, folks!) Taxes are incredibly low: mine for my older home and quarter-acre lot, were less than $800 this year. This means homes are affordable for many people who otherwise couldn't dream of it (including me). We are the capital city of the state, and the county seat, with ready access to elected officials - and exciting opportunities to become involved in state or local government if you like, hopefully keeping respect for the affordability and natural beauty we enjoy, seeking ways to preserve that. There are industries that can help us all, which just need leaders to move here. Green energy hasn't yet taken off as some of us would like, but I think it is coming, especially with Meta's construction of a solar farm for its data center, and the push of several activist groups. Please, come and be part of the positive growth!

Yes, we have a Magnet School program within the public school system with some outstanding successes - the Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) high school was ranked number 13 in the nation one year. Actress Octavia Spencer graduated from Johnson-Abernathy-Graetz high school (known as Jefferson Davis high school at the time). We have a lot of strong private schools routinely sending graduates to Ivy League and other top universities across the nation and overseas. There are several church-based schools in the area. Homeschooling (often under the umbrella of a church) is also popular, and there are homeschool family groups offering support, guidance and opportunities for your young students to have a social circle and extracurricular activities. There are dual-enrollment programs for advanced high school students who may wish to take college courses. Trenholm State Community College on the south side of town offers certifications and degrees in business, health sciences, culinary arts, HVAC, semiconductor manufacturing, and much more. Local 4-year colleges and universities with a long history here include Alabama State University (ASU); Auburn University Montgomery (AUM); Troy University Montgomery; Faulkner University; and Huntingdon College. All of them contribute to the community in ways beyond just educating their own students, too - for example AUM has for some years provided space for the local USGS offices (Federal Dept of the Interior), and Troy operates the Rosa Parks Museum downtown, with visitors from across the globe.

I lived in Montgomery a life ago... my then husband and I did not like the public schools for our two girls, but thank goodness for the magnet schools. I went to AUM while there, loved it, loved it, loved it! I did my practicum in Prattville high school: LOVED IT! But overall we weren't happy and decided to move to Panama City: BIG MISTAKE! Compared to Montgomery, Panama City has little to nothing to give, unless you are into the bar scene and love the beach, but even that becomes off limits to the residents during spring break. I am still working at a local high school, but I am seriously considering selling and moving back to the Montgomery area after retirement, next year. I think Prattville sounds very pretty. • @diepiriye

Thanks for this. My grandparents fled Wetumpka with the great migration in the 1940's as terrorism against and lack of opportunities for Blacks is well documented. My grandfather was a sharecropper and that history is long lost, whereas my grandmother was from an Austin-Cain land-owning family and subsequently her kids moved back south in the 00's. We've recently uncovered a cemetery that included pre-Civil War family graves, i.e. graves from enslaved ancestors. I am so curious to get to know more about Black history in the area, as well as our connection to the white families, the Austins and the Cain family in Holtville, so please share any resources.

I think it depends who you ask, where in the city you live, and what sorts of connections you build with neighbors. I will say, economic waves tend to hit the South later than the East and West coasts, so we are feeling economic pressures still (end of 2024) that are starting to ease elsewhere in the country. But that can work to your advantage if you are home shopping. And recently I've seen a lot of new businesses, a renewal in attendance at our colleges and universities post-COVID, and a lot of other positive growth. As a single person, I was able to purchase an older but solid home and pay it off in 10 years - even while living elsewhere some years for work, and having to pay rent on top of my mortgage. It is my first home, and I love it. Home ownership as a single person was something I never dreamed of, while growing up kind of poor. I live here full time now, and we have built a good neighborhood here, a variety of ages and backgrounds. I save a ton on commuting costs, and I can even walk / bike to the nearest post office, bank, grocery, and pharmacy - the people there greet me by name. I have a huge yard where I can garden, which I love - that hot moist climate also allows nearly year-round gardening. I'll have tomatoes in December. And all this is possible for me, because it was an "undervalued asset" like Mr. Warren Buffet seems to spot and jump on. It's all about looking for the potential and developing it. I would like to see more young people get in the door like I did, and build up our city even more. If I could afford to, I'd buy a second house and rent to young friends, cheap, so they could save up and make it permanent - a way to pay it forward. Our city has been popular as a retiree city in the past but I think there is huge potential for younger people, families and singles, to come and make their mark.

Why the mayor is so horrible? Also I am not condoning it, but Montgomery like every other city unless you live out in the sticks have some issues with crime. Recently, they started a police task force.

I lived there all my life, and we never heard a word about this alleged crater. Sounds like a PR hype to me.
