Clickless Bliss - The $70 Mechanical Pencil | Uni Kuru Toga Dive
Although this pencil didn't score exceptionally in my standard scoring sheet, most higher-end pencils tend to focus on one or two very specific problems to solve in their design. Because of that, it's hard to stick with a standardized scoring criteria that accurately compares pencils from $1 to $100.
Obviously, this pencil is objectively better than any $5 or $10 pencil and is meant for long writing sessions in which the tedious process of ungripping, dispensing lead, and regripping the pencils gets tiresome. I'm a big fan of the mechanism inside and it's my go-to for textbook note-taking. At the moment, it's definitely too expensive for the one or two unique features it sells, I'd defini...

    The prices on eBay are obscene for this pencil. You can find a Pilot 74 pencil for around this price point. Once this pencil is under $20 then its value proposition will be more favorable. I wish they came out with an all metal version plus a knurled grip. Rubber grips just fall apart after time or look nasty.

    Hi, I really liked the video! And I have a question. Between the rotring 500 and the graphgear 500 (0.5mm) which one would you recommend for the price, the durability and the worth of the mechanical pencil? I would like to use it for drawing, not for writing.

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 22 дня назад

      Thank you for your kind words! It’s a little hard to compare the GraphGear 500 to the Rotring 500, since the GraphGear is about half the price. If you meant the GraphGear 100 (which is about the same price as the rotring you mentioned), please let me know! For the price, I think that the Rotring 500 is the better choice. It’s super versatile and I doubt it will ever break with regular use. Also, the brass clutch is one of the best on the market and it continually gives you reliable lead increments, as well as holds the lead very snugly. (If we’re comparing to the GraphGear 1000, I would go with the GraphGear, though. This is because I find it a lot more comfortable and its all-metal body keeps me from worrying about dropping it.)

    I use one of these with Pentel super High-polymer2B lead for writing. Very few lead snaps. The 2B lead is a bit soft and creates a darker line, but it is also more prone to smudges over a harder lead.

    Hey, I just wanted to say thank you so much for these videos. My brain has been obsessively researching mechanical pencils to find the perfect one for me, and your excellent reviews have been a lifesaver. I have a few ideas I'd love to see you cover: 1. A video overview of an entire pencil lineup, such as all the Dr. Grips or Alpha-Gels. 2. A best pencils list. With your deep understanding and experience with mechanical pencils, I'd love to see which pencils you think are the best and which ones you personally use. 3. You could compile all your ratings in a spreadsheet so, at the end of the video, we could see where each pencil fits on the list. Or, even better, a publicly visible spreadsheet with all your ratings and short descriptions attached to each rating. (I know this is a huge ask.) Thanks again for the videos, people like you are what makes the internet so great. ❤

      Thank you so much for all of the suggestions! This actually came just in time, since I’ve been wanting to start making videos again but I’m bewildered about where to start. I already have a spreadsheet I use to compare pencils, but I need to update it before releasing it. I absolutely love the idea of a best pencils/entire lineup video, and I’m thinking of experimenting with a tier list system for the lineup videos. I’m so glad you found my videos helpful, and I’ll 100% give you a shout-out if any of your ideas are used :D

    Is this pencil or uni kuru toga roulette better?

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 2 месяца назад

      It all depends on what you’re looking for; the 1000 is great for people who plan on taking it everywhere. As long as you remember to retract the tip before carrying it places and treat the mechanisms well, you could easily make it last 5+ years. The Uni Kuru Toga is definitely more fragile. It’s for people who want a nice, entry-level mechanical pencil for a smooth writing experience. I have to admit that the spinning mechanism is sort of a gimmick, but it can definitely be reliable if treated with care. If you’re planning on taking this one around the world and back, then I’d 100% suggest a non-plastic model. The Uni Kuru Toga Roulette offers this, as well as the Uni Kuru Toga Advance. I hope I cleared this up for you, and let me know if you have any more questions!

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 2 месяца назад

      If your lead indicator is stiff, I have one question: Did it come like that? If it did come like that, then it’s almost certainly due to NicPro’s quality control (or lack thereof). This means that the only way you can fix it is by continuously twisting it in hopes that the brittle plastic underneath grinds down. I’m not even 100% sure that that will work, as NicPro has dodgy manufacturing processes. If it didn’t come like that, I’d like to know what you think you did for it to become stiff. With that information, I’ll try to give you more advice. Thanks for the question! Please let me know if the information above helps :)

    I bought the Tikky set during sale for 35 Php from Lazada (which is half a dollar) and I loved it. But I feel like they could've done better with the grip and the conical tip. The rubber grip easily gets damaged when you scratch it, it's too small and it feels too hard for my taste.. If the Tikky III is supposed to be a reincarnation of the previous generations, they coulda at least stylize the cone of the tip, making it look a bit more similar to the older ones but afterall the pencil is made in China so there's probably some limitations. Also maybe its just me but the width of the fixed sleeve is too wide that retracting the lead isn't as smooth like in those p205s.. maybe its just me, I dont own the older Tikkies

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 2 месяца назад

      Wow, I’m glad you found such a good price for it! I completely agree about the grip hardness and durability. They definitely could’ve done more with both. I haven’t experienced any problems with the fixed sleeve like you mentioned, but it’s definitely good to know. I hear and agree with your complaints, but there’s only so much we can ask for from a budget pencil. Personally, I think Rotring could’ve done a lot more with the grip and cone, but again, the overall product is pretty good as is. Thanks so much for the comment and insights and I hope to see more comments of yours in the future! :D

    Unfortunately I caved in and bought this pencil above $150... twice. :( Loved your review; and I agree with all the points. It was not worth above $40. The auto knock function wouldn't be able to catch up to how fast the lead was wearing out at times and that made me disappointed with how much I paid for it. Was expecting a flawless experience writing. It's my go to and really fun to write with for note taking because it's auto sharpening is consistent. The colors don't really matter that much once you get one IRL, (I got Twilight Orange & Moonlight Blue) so please to anyone buying just choose the most affordable to try it out. Also I was wondering if you were interested in expanding into traditional pencils like the Mitsubishi Hi Uni (HB, B, 2B) or Mitsubishi 9800 series. And perhaps 2.0 mm lead holders?

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 6 месяцев назад

      Wow! More than $150 twice is crazy haha; I’m glad you still get good use out of them though! I’m glad you enjoyed my review and agreed with a lot of the points. It’s super disappointing that Uni hasn’t optimized that auto-knock function and still has the gall to charge so much for it. The Dive is also my go-to pencil, and (even though it’s super overpriced) it’s still a very nice pencil to write with. As with most products, the colors don’t matter that much, but look cool. I totally agree with your point that *no one* should be paying more than MSRP for this pencil, especially for something as negligible as a special color. I enjoy wooden pencils as a side hobby, and have a decent amount of Blackwings and Mitsubishi 9800s. Nevertheless, I enjoy mechanical pencils quite a bit more and will probably stick with reviewing them until I run out of pencils. Then, it’s very likely that I’ll shift toward wooden pencil-based content. Thank you so much for your insightful comment! I always look forward to seeing your feedback and personal experiences with the pencils I review and hope to keep hearing from you! :D

      Thanks for the input! It’s good to hear that these are reliable if you take good care of them. I wasn’t very confident in the pencil’s quality during the review, but I’ve been using it occasionally since the review and it’s holding up fine :)

    Hello all! After some helpful feedback, I’ve decided that this review isn’t fair. I have one already-filmed video coming up next week, but after its publication, the reviewing criteria sheet will see some substantial changes. I’ve realized that it’s not fair towards more expensive mechanical pencils, especially graphing and drafting pencils, and is mainly geared towards cheaper pencils. Some possible solutions to this include overhauling the standardized pencil sheet completely OR making an entirely new sheet for graphing and drafting pencils. If there are any other ideas for how to solve this issue, I’d really like to hear them, and thanks to everyone for the feedback! I’m going to keep this video posted since I still believe it has valuable information about the pencil, but pin this comment so that viewers know of it’s faults. Have an amazing day everyone! :)

    You are wrong, the crown jewel rotring has is the rotring 800 plus which I have and love for school going between my iPad for notes and graphing. It feels like your reviews heavily are biased for non graphing and cheap pencils. The eraser of this pencil has to be small in order to erase precise things. That is why all other graphing pencils also have little erasers, its not a bad thing. Also not having a retractable tip is a good thing due to not having tip wiggle like the graphgear 500

      @RevieWrite 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for leaving a comment! I agree completely; although the review does go over a lot of valuable information about the pencil, the reviewing sheet definitely needs some work so that more expensive pencils (e.g, graphing and drafting pencils) are fully recognized. This channel is always a work in progress and again, thank you for sharing your opinion on my review. If you have any further advice I’d love to hear it, and you can expect many upcoming changes to my reviewing sheet to accommodate for graphing pencils.

    Love your reviews ... except this one. Here goes my two cents on the subject. imho it should get at least a 8/10 if not a 9/10. And the only thing that would make a dent on the amazing Rotring 500 is indeed a steep price. But Top Quality does have a price. Oh and the feel of that pencil is beyond comparison better then the Pentel graphgear ... anyone using the Rotring 500 would never get back to any other pencil ...

    • @RevieWrite
      @RevieWrite 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for the criticism! It’s important to get several perspectives about a pencil for a solid review. I can’t refute that the Rotring 500 doesn’t have a way above industry standard level of quality control and overall build quality because it really does. I also agree with you that a lot of the Rotring 500’s strengths were overlooked in my reviewing sheet, which is a pretty big issue. The only issue with tweaking the reviewing sheet is that my reviews lose their continuity (in that it’s harder to compare one pencil I reviewed to another, since they’re not made using the same standards), but I’ll try my best to edit it to be fair to more expensive pencils. Again, thanks so much for the criticism and if you have any further suggestions I’d love to hear them out!

      @@RevieWrite Thanks for your comment and prompt reply. Also please take into consideration in your reviews that almost all mechanical pencils will have a poor "eraserbility" since apart from say the classic Pentel Twist and some odd pencil out there (one BIC that you also reviewed in 9mm size) most have very poor erasers. Actually they are not meant to have good solid erasers since space is scarse ... A clear example is drafting professional Pencils like the Rotrings and the Pentel Graphgear line and practically all drafting pencil. They are meant to be used with normal regular standalone pencil erasers. So the eraser is actually an afterthought when they are designing those wonderful writing tools. I know ...I know ... I would Love also to have the Perfect Pencil, big decent eraser and amazing writing feeling. But, has they say in engineering: " The Optimum is the enemy of the Good " ... 😀

      Hi! Thanks for sharing :D Throughout the entire review sheet, the grip category is definitely one of the most opinionated and I'm glad to get an outside opinion! I'm just not a fan of how hard it is and the material is a bit slippery for my liking, but if you enjoy it, all power to you! It's nice to get a variety of perspectives, and hopefully this helps show that everyone's grip preference is different :)

    Hello from Russia! NicPro is NOT a Japanese Stationery company. Actually, it's just american manufacturer with OEM-ODM production in China (THEY JUST BOUGHT THESE PENCILS FROM ALIBABA AND SELLING AS JAPANESE FIRM, WHAT THE HECK?). If you want to know, they wanted to use this trick (calling themselves a foreign company) in America, but alas, it doesn't work. It works only for ignorant people. And such a marketing trick works where? That's right in Russia - we have BrauBerg, Berlingo, ErichKrause, Hatber. Since they do not know that it is Russian - they pressed on our brains that they are Germans. What Germans? Even a fake address of a German office or somewhere else doesn't work for me. They are just customers, they don't do the development themselves. - They just order products, and convince you to put their "labels" on them. Many of their products suck. but some products are made more or less the same, like I have Berlingo SuperSoft colored pencils (competitor to Maped Color Peps, and they cost almost the same). That's why I use ONLY Pilot, Penac (the quality is not bad. But it is known as a good OEM-ODM for Pentel, Uni, Pilot, Tombow and others), Uni-Ball. On rare occasions - I am trusted by some normal Chinese ones like Deli.

      @RevieWrite 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the insight! I didn't make it clear in the video, but I maintain that NicPro are probably Chinese-made pencils with fancy-ish marketing. I don't know this for fact (please don't sue me NicPro), but the production quality and incessant typos on their Amazon website are definitely pointing to non-Japanese production. It's very interesting how some companies feign their true origins, and there might be some detective work that needs to be done 🕵️ Nevertheless, I try to keep the mood on my channel light and friendly, so I probably won't be doing any research of my own into this. Sticking to well-known companies like Pilot and Uni is a great strategy to ensure you're getting what you pay for, and thanks again for commenting! Have a wonderful day :)

In my opinion, the optimal pencil contains *everything* you could realistically need during a writing session, which includes a high quality, long-lasting eraser. Nevertheless, I’m glad you were able to get the most out of your pencil and thank you for leaving a comment! :)
