What Was Ashnard's Deal? | Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Mormons don't worship Jesus Christ. They worship themselves and make Jesus equal to themselves.
I'm up on my FE7 lore but this video was definitely not a waste of time, on the contrary I kinda forgot about Bramimond and Kishuna yet never really connected their link to Nergal until now. All these years I've never realized Nergal wasn't just a tragic figure who lost his wife and then himself to pursue power in bitterness but he was really another dark scholar who failed compared to another of his peer who succeeded. The only reason why was because Nergal could never give up his identity and emotions. He was a talented man who lacked something elementary and his life ends while an actual dark scholar who succeeded his work only shortly after he died, such grand irony.
Dammit, now I need to watch it again.
I never cared for this movie As a six year old I found it to be boring and then as a teenager/twenty year old I found it somewhat lazy. The movie shapes its own setting through the most commonly known events of the US in the later half of the 20th century. I figured if I, personally, could cite these events the movie must have as limited knowledge of history as my own. I know the appeal is that it provides a very simple and basic vision of the 60s, 70s, and 80s so that folks of all ages can understand and follow but that was my perspective in my youth. As a thirty something year old, I don’t quite what to make of it: I guess you could call it Oscar bait which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a hopeful movie I suppose; it has good intentions despite its potential ignorance
Oh, the title cut off. I thought it was “Spoiler free anal”
Loved the series great tv if y’all this check zero zero zero same director…
I know I'm a bit late but when i started watching Merlin at age 11 i loved the show and sided with Merlin but rewatching it at age 17 i realized there was a lot of wasted potential. What they could have done was set up something better for the ending of the series to be more impactful and bittersweet or they could have just changed the ending, not colocating with the Arthurian legends, since they were not following much of the original stories. They could have just made morgana evil for some time and brought her back with her redemption arc and gave us a new villain to be dealt with(Like the Disir from Merlin season 6: Kingdom come.) but i am just disappointed and i am reading fanfics that are a lot better
Keeping it real Gomorrah got way too cartoonish and over the top in the last 2 seasons especially. The first season is the best. Followed by season 2. The quality of the show goes down woth each season release actually. Although always entertaining, even through the final season, the docudrama element only really pertains to the early seasons. It gets outlandish especially because one character in particular has major plot armor. The writers were too afraid to kill off their golden boy and it hurt the story. Still, i think its great. I was a fan of Gamorrah the film and im a fan of the show, flaws and all.
This sums it up pretty good. After season 2 the golden boy turns into a totally new character. This is not the guy who did the horrible things we saw in season one.
Italys answer to Breaking Bad. Horrible description. It has way more in common with The Wire than it does woth Breaking Bad. I like Breaking Bad but noooooo!
He also has the most badass theme for a boss I’ve heard in ages,
pretentious trash, lol
This is why I generally have a hard time empathizing with 'deep' anime villains, they go full world destruction over something normal people maybe get one unpaid day off work for.
Have you considered Sonia is really hot and a guy leading a gang of assassin's might be pretty easy to sway?
🎉
He wanted to kill dragons, because he would get even more quintessence from them. It's explained by the story, actually. Nergal was always seeking greater power, first he would have humans kill each other in a great war, then harvest their quintessence, with that quintessence, he would summon dragons, which he would then harvest for even greater amounts of the quintessence. Why didn't he simply kill Nils and Ninian? Because it wouldn't be enough. He wanted to kill dragons in mass to truely become almighty. A few dragons wouldn't suffice. I find it a bit confusing that people think that the story is full of holes when the story actually explains most of them quite well.
I think what really gets me is that Merlin being so obsessed with Arthur and scared of rejection that he enables his own genocide COULD be a really compelling tragedy. His character arc does work really well as a morally grey anti-hero, but the show tries so hard to frame him as the good guy. Especially the ending, acting like Merlin actually did succeed in his destiny and achieve equal rights when he absolutely does not.
Gomorrah is basically what David Chase would loved to got on Commendatore episode.
The Music sets the tone its dark yet beautiful. The filming is very good often on the move in a car looking out the windows of the streets of Naples. I watched the movie and now each episode and the movie offshoot. Now I watching season 5 I could go back to season 1 and start again. The Brothers of Gennaro and Ciro are great character to watch there development. This is an excellent commentary, on a brilliant dark series.

Great video! I've actually always thought Nergal was interesting and had good screen presence. But this made me like him more and realize the game had more interesting things to say even if they weren't super eloquent with it
Nergals story was told fine? -he wants the quintessence of dragons -he used to be a good man in search of knowledge -he fell in love and had children -tragedy strikes -he turns to dark magic in his grief and loses himself
Thanks for your interesting content! Great serie about the Banda della Magliana. Also because it's shows the historical context quite well: the Years of Lead in Italy.
Correct subtitles please.
ALSO, I love Ninian’s prayer at ~14:08
Funny, I was just thinking how I would adjust the FE7 story to make Nergal more sympathetic/clarify his motives, and stumbled on this. Similar thoughts, I was considering Bramimond as maybe his personal hero but the foil idea is more complete
2:37 I disagree. I think there's more than enough hints throughout the game to figure out that his philosophy is "the strongest rules the weak through fear and uses them to his benefit". I have 2 more things to say, which funnily enough aren't even related to Ashnard himself lol. There's a lot of text but I promise this is interesting. First I'm completely confused as to why you mentionned that the game is intended for children near the end of the video. I don't even know where to start with why I think this is wrong. I know you said "but the writing can appeal to all ages" after, but even still I think you underestimate the game and its target audience. The game is very much targeted to teenagers and adults alike, yes. But I'd'd argue the writing is specifically targeting adults without question. I first played path of radiance around halfway through when I was 15 and I liked the story, but when I played it 2 years later I enjoyed the story so so much more. I understood what was going on better (granted maybe this one also has to do with my level of english not being quite as good when I was 15 since it's my 2nd language), understood much more implications, loved the world building, the character building, everything. And today I appreciate it even more than I did when I was 17. It's one of my favorite stories of all time easily (if we include radiant dawn as part of the same story). I've heard many stories of people who tried path of radiance as kids and got bored very fast and dropped it, only to try it again much later in life and rank it as one of their favorite games ever. You can argue the gba fe games for example have a level of writing more suited to children, or perharps even targeted to them a bit, while still being suitable for any adult, but I can't help but completely disagree that Tellius is anywhere close to that. Heck even when I played it when I was 15 I did have a small feeling that the story was intended for a target audience a little bit older than me with how fleshed how the world was, the politics, how serious the story was and also because it had a LOT more dialogue than any other game I had played up to this point. A child won't be interested in the story as much and could easily get bored with how long dialogue scenes can last due to short attention spans. My 2nd thing is about this bit at 1:40 about the laguz allegory not really working. I heavily disagree. The way you talk about it makes it seem like the game humanizes the beorc oppressing the laguz because they're different. Like the game would say it's understandable to be suspicious or fearful of the laguz. But the game goes out of its way to say the complete opposite. Ike believes that it's NOT okay to be fearful or suspicious of the laguz even if they are that different. So in that sense, I'd say it reinforces the message so much more. The game says even if there was a type of human who had powers we didn't possess in our world we should still treat them as one of our own and treat them the same. The main issue here is that you treat the laguz as a different species from humans. While it is only revealed in radiant dawn (even though you can easily figure it out yourself with path of radiance), the laguz and beorc have the same ancestors. But even then that's not even really relevant either. The point of the game is that if a species is as intelligent as us, is self-aware, feels complex emotions, can communicate with precise languege, has a complex society (so overall just an advanced species about on the same level as humans in our real world), you should consider them your kin, no matter what. Even if the laguz were aliens that settled on Tellius 200 years before the events of the game the message would still be the same and Ike would have the same views without question. Yes, IRL racial differences are socially constructed (aside from skin color, but that's a very insignificant difference in people). They come from differences in culture, history, fear, doubt, etc. In Tellius it is more understandable how the beorc and laguz ended up hating each other, yes. But it's still the same result. Prejudice. And the story of the game is working towards ending that prejudice, just like we do in real life. In no way does the writing imply that the prejudice against the other is justified so it's ok if the prejudice stays. And you do need specific culture differences if you want to make a successful alegory. Africans have a very different mindset and culture from say europeans. It led to culture clashes when they interacted in history. Sure, the differences between laguz and beorc are much greater, but you need to have those differences that aren't superficial. It's strongly implied in path of radiance that the laguz really aren't as brilliant as the beorc when it comes to creating tools. Whether this is because laguz lack the capacity to think creatively and ingeniously or because they simply didn't developp their knowledge in this field due to lack of interest is up to interpretation, though. Mordecai also says that in Gallia the most common language is sign language. They can communicate without words, simply with growls and movements, similar to animals would. BUT the major difference here is their communications with one another are as simplistic as animals. An animal lacks the intelligence to communicate in complex ways likke we humans do, so you can't just teach them a sign language where each sign corresponds to a word for example. The laguz, however can. Mordecai learns the international tongue and while his matter of speech is very simplistic and may imply that he's not that smart, this isn't the case when you look deep into it. His thoughts are as complex as any other character in the game, the only reason it might not appear that way is because of the language barrier. The laguz have a very different political structure as well. One that is much more simple, but arguably might be more effective than the overcomplicated beorc one. They believe the strongest should rule, but unlike ashnard, they believe the one who does end up ruling needs to not rule through threats and fear. If they fail to do so they're well aware that it will not be hard for him to be overthrown. This is mentionned in a base conversation between Lucia and Lethe in chapter 2-2 of radiant dawn. Those differences in political structure are really not that different from the ones of europeans and indigenous societies around 1600s. Indigenous people had elections for crying out loud. Although they didn't choose based on who was the strongest, but rather who they thought was more wise and who communicated their ideas the best. So the culture differences between laguz and beorc aren't *THAT* far from how they have been between different societies in history. Note that prejudice first comes from differences in culture and then those differences in culture are associated with skin color. I'm just saying this here to explain why I was talking about cultural differences. In both games Ike makes a point about using the term "people" to include both laguz and beorc. So in that way, the way Ike uses the world "people" to describe both branches of the Zunanma together is the same as how we use "human" to describe a human of any race or skin color IRL. So it's really not a case of comparing prejudice and oppression of a different species to real world oppression of a different race of humans. In both games, the story glorifies the mindset that laguz and beorc are the same: people. In the tower of guidance, there's a base conversation between Micaiah and Sothe. Ike accidently interrupts it and starts talking to Micaiah. Micaiah says she and Soren are both branded (which granted isn't the same as laguz, but given that the branded also face opression, just treat it as a third race), to which Ike responds "don't use that word. You and Soren are both people. Just liike me and everyone else" Micaiah then replies with "people. You’re just like Yune. You call both laguz and beorcs people" Ike responds "Why should I care about the color of your hair, eyes, and skin? Or your ears, wings, or tail? No matter how long you live or what powers you possess, we’re the same. At the end of the day, we’re all people". Here Ike specifically says the differences between him and someone who has a tail or wings are the same as someone who's a different skin color from him. They shouldn't be treated differently, because at the end of the day, they are the same and deserve to be treated as such. They're both highly intelligent, emotionally intelligent, self-aware creatures that can think rationally and make counscious decisions and can communicate between themselves. Did I write too much about this? Yes I did.
I hate people who say 'Hots different...' Vafancullo
I also think the music was its own character
Given Ninian and Nils limited precognition (and status as children being guarded by a group that pretends to have morals) I don't think it's impossible that they could escape and stow away on a Black Fang ship. The kids don't recognize Nergal as their father due to having been away from him for nearly a millennia. That and he's acting completely different to how they remember him. If you look at Canas's support conversations we learn that his brothers also studied dark magic... and were consumed by it, becoming completely empty husks. It seems there is a balance that must be struck, give up too much and you become soulless, give up the wrong things and you become like Nergal, completely lost. Give up exactly the right amount and you become like Bramimond, and can perform miracles. It's also somewhat up in the air as to when Nergal took the final step and sacrificed so much as to become an insane monster. He definitely wasn't when he met Athos and found Arcadia. He also wasn't when he first made Kishuna, which is after he was driven out from Arcadia. He might even have done it to heal the wounds Elbert gave him. Kishuna appears angry in the Genesis chapter but sorrowful in The Value of Life. Maybe Nergal turned him out between the two? I've also heard it hypothesized that Aenir looked like Limstella, or rather that Limstella (and Sonia) were Nergal subconsciously trying to recreate her appearance. I really like Nergal as a villain and have never really understood why others think he's stupid or incompetent or whatever. He's decently clever and quite effective. He's just out of his depth dealing with Athos and Bramimond.
Omg! I didn’t even know you had a video on Forrest Gump. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary. I too believe the movie tries to say everything and nothing all at once. What bothered me the most was how the women of the movie were just going through motions. The men seem to have agency and goals while the plot happens around Jenny and Bubbas mom even Forrest’s mom.
My favorite example is Mr. Beast recreating it in real life. Squid game was made to be a big fat middle finger to people like Jimmy and he just shrugs it off and proceeds to do exactly what the show is telling him not to do. Its not an instruction guide for a cool game show, its a criticism of the exploitation of the poor by the upper class.
If i had a nickel for everytime a human fe antagonist fucked a dragon and went crazy I'd have 2 nickles but its weird it happened twice
The funny thing is: no, you did not give me a new insight on Nergal. I already knew he was a once good person and a family man who lost himself in the pursuit of power and thought it was relatively obvious with fe8 making that motif even more obvious. But you did give me a new perspective on FE7's story and how it weaves its themes into the story and helped me appreciate my favourite fe even more. This was a great watch and I'd gladly watch more fire emblem content by you. Was mildly disappointed to find this isn't a fe channel (i did watch your Ashnard video and dug that to)
I think "fat ugly neckbeard" being a popular feminist insult for so long automatically led to "body positivistity" starting at a disadvantage and making it obvious it was only for woman and whatever genders tumblr considered close enough
The greatest piece of entertainment I've ever seen. A masterpiece
One of the most egregious problems with the "I can't kill Uther" schtick is that often defending Uther requires Merlin to directly kill other people. So he can't allow a plot to kill a genocidal maniac, because that would be murder and therefore bad. But he CAN directly murder the victims trying to free themselves from oppression.
Erhm what the sigma
It's nothing like BB!! BB is n̈ot in the same league
I like BB but wtf is that description? Not even close to being similar.
The music in my opinion is what helped make this show so fricking good
Gomorra change my life forever, everything now is pure BS when I compare with Gomorra. Some episodes traumatize me because feels so real that is like all other shows are now a black and white comedy. I miss the show soo much
Someone brought up the argument that this show was targeted at British kids in order to brainwash them to despise anarchy and remain 100% loyal to the British crown and used this video as a reference. I can believe it even if I possibly articulated it wrong, making the whole thing sound like a drunken ramble.
Wow... I'm glad I never read Kingdom Come. This video was both painful and cathartic tbh. I watch Merlin because of Morgana tbh and I've noticed...almost all Arthurian content are kind of like this. Like you said, Arthurian content is nothing more than... monarchist propaganda but damn really Kingdom Come is...like that? Oh god.
I liked the video, but i didn’t liked the 3 spoilers there 16:51!!!!
Tragic Vokda by Mokadelic is a triumph of film music that will live forever.
"whatever this is" that's a fucking microcosm of how much of a shitty-ass story Three Houses is and why it's attempts to have it's cake and eat it too failed absolutely _Miserably, GOD_ I hate that they made Edelgard an antagonist and assumed the player would want to side with the lady whom the literal _FIRST_ thing they're told of them is "Watch Out For Lady Rhea." Just leave the continent, I swear. I'm not happy with Verdant Wind because Rhea's let off the hook, I'm not happy with Crimson Flower because... well because they made a villain route out of what _REALLY_ shouldn't have been, I won't even TOUCH Silver Snow because that'd require avoiding forming a bond with Edelgard which is just doomed to failure for several reasons, and I'm not inclined to finish Azure Moon because _Bleh,_ and I don't think I'd enjoy the endgame anyway, where's my Hanneman route he's the only person with any sort of sensible idea on how to fix this galactic shitfuck of a continent and I don't think he even knows it. The story is a big reason I don't want to play that game anymore.
It's the directing, camera work, lighting and editing that's great. Characters are good. Plots are Good. Dialogue is good. But it's the way that the director bring the viewer into the action that's great. IMHO
"I miss my wife Eliwood. I miss her a lot."
Even the soundtrack hits you in a different way, when a song start you know something is about to happen and probally is gonna be bloody.
Bramimond was already one of my top 5 favorite character in fire emblem. Your insights and analysis on him just… amazing. Probably my favorite now.
