Center vs Border: battle for the internet age
As a kid I never liked mirrodin (OG) blocks. The aesthetics and mechanics werent made for me I think. Returning to it though, seeing phyrexia emerge from mirridins corpse was devastating and fascinating. Too bad they couldnt write Phyrexia as it should be.
That's part of what I loved about Scars of Mirrodin block. The treatment of Phyrexians in Phyrexia: All Will Be One and March of the Machine was unfortunately underwhelming
@@conflux2300 I feel you. Innistrad was my favorite plane and it devolved into... Halloween fair? The latest sets had vampires using rose petals and red bats instead of blood. Sanitization unfortunatelly killed most of my interest in mtg.
Yeah, the last few sets have not been very memorable. I'm cautously optimistic that this will improve a little, but we'll see. How did you find my video btw?
@@conflux2300 It made me appreciate OG mirrodin more. I've seen the whole series (where you compare callbacks) and this one. Some of those videos feel like almost an eulogy combining the music and the flavor text of the cards - you can see a world dying (and this I think newer magic will also not be able to properly duplicate for a while). Id probably be interested in seeing you compare OG new phyrexia with the newer phyrexians.
Not modern wtf
This was when I started to play the game a bit more seriously. Also spending a good amount of my first summer job wages on booster packs :D
Fun times :D it was a good time to get into Magic
Stuff like this, this is what made me love magic. This is what makes people into lore junkies. The art, the lore, the world building, the aesthetic, I love all of Mirrodin, as well as the New Phyrexia of the Scars block. I don't know why the art of modern magic feels so sanitized, almost like it's too clean. I have a few ideas, but I don't know anything for sure. But, I do know we will probably never see stuff like this again. Art this beautiful and unique, a sorry this coherent, lore this crisp. Shame I only got started somewhere between tarkir and ixalan, since I missed out on the glory days.
Yeah, Scars was great too. Much better than March of the Machine and Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Unfortunately a lot of recent sets feel a little bland and soulless. Bloomburrow was good, but many of the others are very disposable
@@conflux2300 Honestly. Worldbuilding is reduced to what hats the same characters are wearing. I didn't like planeswalkers as a card very much, but omenpaths are terrible for story variety. They can just reuse the same characters over and over now, and then ai generate some art to come up with a few characters to fill in the gaps. Speaking of, it's not just the current phyrexian designs, most of the art these days just feels... off, somehow. Almost like a lot of it has the same fake, plastic feeling that a lot of AI artwork has. The only modern artist I really care for now is ole Seb, specially since they fired my favorite artist, since his artwork actually feels like proper art.
Yeah, I'm hoping we get some grittier, more engaging sets soon. I have cautious optimism for Tarkir: Dragonstorm and, later, the return to Lorwyn
@@seandowney2338modern companies have no use for real talent. ❤ Seb.
Seb is the GOAT! 🐐
Greatest sets... the flavor of Mirrodin and Scars block is just so awesome
Agreed. Scars was a banger and really lived up to the original
song?
Aether - Density & Time
Great job
Thank you! And thanks for watching
I think magic golden age started with Mirridon. The set itself was powerful, card selection was top notch, and the art was a blend of the old magic look but with the modern design without being over the top. Magic design was great up to the events Khans of Tarkir. Every since the loss of block design and the push for more universe beyond, magic will never the same again.
Well put. I largely agree.
I'm not sure I agree. Mirrodin infamously almost broke the game with its extreme power level, which yes from today's perspective maybe isn't actually that bad but that says more about today's MTG than it does about Mirrodin. I'm sure the question really comes down to when a player got into the game. I started during the Mercadian Masques block, so to me everything from Urza's Saga to right around Onslaught block would be the golden age (with a special shout-out to Time Spiral block as well), and everything after feels like "new school" Magic.
Time Spiral was so great. I've seen few IPs reference themselves, play with their own history, and do a nostalgia trip so effectively
when the power creep is self aware
Lmao
Plus most of the illustrations are soulless at best
Thanks for collecting all these! I find them fun too especially when it isn’t as direct of a reference feels like knowledge of the game is rewarded by getting more out of a name or artwork!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found some value in it. Yeah, one thing I love about Magic is how it has in-jokes and references itself. It rewards people who have stuck with the game for a long time.
I love the references
Me too! They're fun
Thank you

Do we know what materials did he use?
He would sketch landscapes, then translate those sketches into carved woodblock designs
He first made sketches on paper, then had the sketches translated onto carved woodblock designs

You can see where Studio Ghible gets it's visual influences. Lovely.
Absolutely!
I need to watch this movie. 9:15 I'm not sure if its a little dose evil but rather disagreeableness. rather be truthful and stand your ground at the risk of hurting feelings and relationships, then lie and compromise to keep the peace. Great video, bro.
This whole thing is done by AI. Whoever created this video didn't read the book. Just try googleLM guys, it's free
I encountered Yuval Noah Harari's writing before he became an internationally known figure. It was a magazine article during a time when Ray Kurzweil's concept of the singularity was relatively novel. Even then, Harari seemed to me to be recycling ideas found in technical media, making bold statements without a deep understanding of the issues, and sometimes taking ownership of these ideas. Over the years, I have read and listened to more of his work, and this initial impression has not changed; on the contrary, it has been reinforced.
I've heard similar critiques. Some people say he's more of a good popularizer of ideas than an originator of them
Hey you're a fellow South African! Nice one boet - I'm also a fan 😊

I love the 7th Edition artworks! But only after I separated Serra Angel from the rest of the set. 7th Edition Serra Angel is horrible. On a technical level it's a pretty good artwork, but on an aesthetic level she looks really ugly. Also, she doesn't feel like Serra Angel. For the longest time I had associated 7 Edition with ugly art because of Serra Angel alone. As soon as I left Serra out of the picture and looked at the rest of the cards, I finally see the great artwork in 7ED. Idk, Serra Angel was such a huge fan favorite that she somehow wrapped the perception of the whole set around her.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of that Serra Angel either. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Are you a fellow Saffa? We need more saffa YTers dissecting the arts and history, I'm in the process of throwing my hat into the ring as well.

Why do people say that Ken killed the waiter? The waiter steered the car off the road. Ken had nothing to do with the car going off the road. It would have been better for the two if they hit the deer instead. It also wasn’t Ken’s fault that he didn’t have the lung capacity to free the waiter from the underwater car.
They say he killed the waiter because he knowingly manipulated a guy in his early twenties to sell and consume drugs. Most people say that the waiter's erratic steering of the car was heavily influenced by the drugs he did in an earlier scene. Also, he wouldn't have been jn the car in the first place if Kendall didn't ask him to so....
@@xavier-michaelmuli165I understand your reasoning, but you can kinda blame a lot of people with that logic, you could say the waiter wouldn’t have died if it weren’t for Tom and Shiv having their wedding there.
I love Japan & Japanese art and culture, Ukiiyo-e art, the Arts & Crafts movement, etc. Also love this period in history, arts, architecture, decor, happenings, music and thought very much. This art is deeply favorite for me!! I got to briefly meet one of my modern favorites, Yoshiko Yamamoto. This will be one of my favorite videos of all time! Thank you!
Thank you so much! That means a lot
7th edition is still my favorite set to this day. It's not only because I started with 7th, it is just legitimately still one of the best sets for both art and flavor text. The story is simple, sure, but there can be beauty in simplicity.
Hard agree!
These are gorgeous. I see a lot of similarities between Kawase and Maxfield Parrish in the use of light in early morning and twilight, and the tone palette. Don't know who influenced who, though (or even if they did, though it seems very likely each was aware of the other's work). They were contemporaries; perhaps it was mutual. I have some Parrishs and one Kawase; I'll have to get more Kawase now.
Interesting parallel between the two of them! Thanks for commenting
