We Built a Wildlife Observation Tower On Our Food Plots!
Have you heard about a thing called "fence"? In my country, that's what we use. And we never have problems with deer or any other creatures, either. With moles, sometimes. They tend to get over (under) fences. But that's the most.
Most gardeners are missing the boat. Consider using discarded upright Freezers or refrigerators for a raised bed. They are just the right size for weeding and harvesting at waist height, making them ideal for wheelchair access or seniors, or those with back problems. One or a dozen, it 's up to you. It took me two weeks on Craigslist to get an even dozen boxes, and that was being picky. No stainless steel, or black refrigerators, no side-by-sides, only white boxes. They come insulated, and the type of soil they have is up to you. No more gophers, moles, rabbits, either! Just remove and discard the doors and shelves, fill and plant. Water with a garden hose, or plumb them with an irrigation system from below. Ideal for an apartment with a small patio, or a big yard. No more bending to weed! Best of all, they're free, and you keep them out of the landfill! Details to your questions if you like. Upcycle those landfill white elephants!
Great video. Can you post a link the drill attachment to make the holes. I want something efficient and not use something dull that cool lead to injury or wasted time.
Cherry tomatoes are on sale this week in my area so I was thinking about canning some sauce for later
Start a worm Farm to make your own compost. I hear the worm poop (castings) is great for plants. You could probably even turn one of those big metal containers into a worm farm.! Lots of awesome tips on RUclips on how to get a worm farm going.
I just got a tank like this from my job for free. I just need to install drainage thanks!
Have made 3x now ❤
Making today ❤❤
Thats a really misleading title since it will do no such thing and kill or injure countless other beneficial bugs and birds in the process..Way to bait everyone in to doing the same thing..You should be ashamed of yourself..
How does it freeze?
That doesn't work
Thanks dude. Was very helpful
Love it gonna try it looks great
Do you guys go to Thistle Downs racetrack?
Heard a few on other videos saying these have the smell that attacks the beetle so it can bring them from your whole neighborhood to YOUR garden
does pyritthren kill them?
I curse at the pests in my garden with a little accent, too! 😂 Gosh, I hope these traps help! I am sooooo tired of retreating with neem oil and every other organic potion I’ve tried!
I just learned never to put the traps by your plants! It brings them in to your garden.
omg i just found this video and i loved it!! gonna try it tomorrow
Dang it that's the best advice I heard all day these deers are killing my purple Hull peas bro
Just wondering if you got ants in your bed from the fallen lumber?
Drain plug is enough don’t drill into bottom.
❤
I used these traps and just like others have said I caught a few beetles, a few bees, and a ton of houseflies and gnats. My cucumbers remained infested with the beetles. I even tried fashioning the sticky traps into duplicate blossoms by cutting the sticky paper and making cones to resemble the blossoms and I had the same result. I tried the yellow cups with various soap, water, and vinegar concoctions listed online and it had little effect. Neem oil didn’t work for me and neither did diatomaceous earth. I’m in the Northeast Ohio area and had good success with cucumbers my first few years but the last few have just been devastating. I’ve replaced the soil in these areas and I will try one more time. To date I’m simply not aware of an organic/non toxic method for dealing with these pests. Most every garden center I went to recommended seven-dust. That will probably be the product I try this year.
Nematode's work
Nematodes need to be a specific type for these beetles : Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (or HB)
Have you tried growing burpless varieties? They produce far less cucurbitacin, the chemical that attracts the beetles. It makes the plants tougher for the beetles to locate, though once they do, they’ll attack it like they would any other cucurbits. But if you grow them in an area that’s currently free of beetles, they’ll be far less likely to end up with them.
@@SynthOSpherethen if you have marigolds nearby, won’t they inhibit the nematodes
@@lburrsshinyhunts2253 I don't know, but I would doubt it. Nematodes don't eat plants or roots, they eat other insects eggs and larvas. So they might not be sensitive to whatever makes the marigold repulsive to some insects (flavonoïds, auxines or such). If uncertain, you could try a section that doesn't have marigold and test it.
for those reading, you can get free mulch from your city compost to fill
And you will have no idea what that compost is composed of. I'm not even talking about organic here. Think about plants killed with herbicides or diseased plants that could infect your garden. Many plant diseases are not killed off by composting.
really a stock tank , twice as much as anything else its size, its metal so pulls heat into roots and doesn't let moisture out, the sun is brutal on these things try touching one in Utah summer at 105 degrees, even the horse4 water heats up.
Colder areas and short seasons, it would be good.
Did the bees get trapped?
Did you get good enough drainage? I see that you drilled a bunch of holes but then it is sitting right on the ground, so aren’t the holes being clogged up right away? I replaced the plug in mine with a boiler valve that I can open up. Then I filled the bottom with large stones and a screen in front of the drain so water will come out through the drains after filtering through the large stones. Honestly don’t know if my method will be good or not so I’m curious how your drainage works out.
May I ask where you purchased your tanks?
They have them at Tractir supply. I just purchased some off of fb marketplace.
Very nice project. Exactly what I want to do here in west Michigan.
I thought about using stock tanks for planters, but was afraid that once I drilled holes for drainage I was just asking for rusting to start. Won't that be an issue?
Thanks for this video... mixing soil in your truck bed had me in stitches. That's using your "engine"-uity! Quick suggestion: next time you're mixing a lot of soil like you did, either line your truck bed with a large tarp, or mix the soil on a tarp on the ground. We always use that method at our landscape jobs. Easier cleanup and pretty much no wasted resources or added cleanup time. Would love to see a follow up vid on how these galvanized tanks are holding up over the years, especially using the Hugelkultur method; did the sides buckle at all? and what about soil moisture levels? Thanks!
I would’ve used one of the other stock tanks to mix it
😊
I have been using three stock tanks for years. I just took out the drain plug. No drilling of holes, no cement blocks. Just two feet of organic material so that roots can go deep. I didn't fill it to the very top so that when it rains it does not splash dirt everywhere. I add soil every spring as required. A huge difference from ground gardening. Easy on my back. I also use two whiskey barrel halves that drain okay on their own. I recently started using an old fibreglass canoe with a long horizontal crack near the top. Works well and looks neat in the garden. I got my tree guy to source four large stumps which I put around the canoe. I put flower pots on the stumps. Having an extended growing season this year, no frost as of Oct 1.
Where do you live? Any problem with root rot from it being galvanized?
I appreciate the info but the music has to go. I keep muting it and then miss what you say.
Must b me expensive though 😢
Delcious, I might suggest sppeding up the actual process on the video
Would saw dust be a good filler? How many years do they last before starting to rust out?
I’ve read fresh saw dust/shaving robs the soil of nutrients.
"Make sure to wear gloves and eye protection"....then proceeds to scatter bits of toe cutting shards all over the yard :D
that was my first thought
That looks extremely easy and extremely delicious. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I'm glad you got the little b***ards. 😂
I bought these and it just caught gnats! Not a single Cucumber beetle. And those weren't cheap either. 😢
excellent right to the point subbed and liked thank you
So if you're using the yellow sticky traps yo catch beetles, would they then not also catch bees?? I'm just worried that I try the same thing, and it catches the beetles (which is what I want) but then it also works so well that it catches bees (which I don't want to happen).
There destroying my flowers
Two things that have worked successfully: 1. Irish Spring soap 2. Shotgun
I have a lot of those sticky things for my indoor plants I was tempted to put them outside , but I was worried about the bees 🐝 😢 I want to bees but not wasps and these little fu****s.
Appreciate this! Been ruminating on getting one or of a few of these for a few years, and after viewing the go time feels more imminent :) Gracias
I’ve never had these before😳 it’s almost (almost) as bad as squash bugs. !$$??!!
only thing that works for me is spraying them with seven when first notice them.
