The Longest Day is not a fair comparison as, not only was filmed in a different way and time period, it also covered a much wider scope of the battle. Saving Private Ryan is much more comparable to the movie 1917. All three are fantastic movies in their own ways.

Great discussion...I always appreciate hearing the perspective of folks from places outside the US talking about this movie. Some of the things you gents talked about got me thinking about a few things to comment... I definitely commend you for mentioning the fact that the US Army Rangers rode to shore in British landing craft, but I actually fault Spielberg more than you folks specifically for his erasure of those British sailors on the landing craft. You talked about leaving out British troops, and I tend to agree that you let Hollywood be Hollywood in not showing any of the troops on the other beaches, but to me leaving out the British sailors who actually drove those Rangers to shore is too far, AFAIAC. Spielberg's excuse has always been that putting British sailors in would have been inaccurate to the real boats that he could get, which were of course LCVPs that would have been operated by Americans, but I still think that Spielberg was wrong to do that. To me, it is better to honor those British boat crews by putting them in, than it is to be trapped by history into leaving out their participation. Also, just to be clear...the US in WW2 would never send a mission out to find a single soldier like that...not if they did not even know if he was alive or where he was. If he had been captured and the US knew where he was, they would have perhaps considered a rescue mission, but not in these circumstances where there was no way to know where he was or if he was even alive. You mentioned Dale Dye's role as the officer speaking out AGAINST the mission to get Ryan, and he was speaking the reality of how the Army would handle it...and did in the case of the 4th Niland brother. And you folks talked about whether Miller was an "ideal" commander and about that attack on the machine gun, but if we were talking about real life...it was a huge mistake by Miller to attack that machine gun, and almost surely a violation of his orders. If he was really ordered by General George Marshall to go and get Ryan, then his orders would have been to make that his priority...even over winning the war...and his job would have been to avoid side missions that could prevent him from saving Private Ryan. Not to mention the fact that using his medic on the attack like that is also a violation of the rules of war...a minor war crime...and another HUGE red flag of his poor decision making. If Miller had lived and Ryan NOT been saved, Captain Miller would have been court martialed for violating his orders. You folks touched upon a lot of the other things that I normally comment when other folks ask me about SPR, so I really appreciated the discussion overall. I agree with you folks that the movie has some amazing accurate moments, as well as an overall high level of realism, the only thing that I would add is that the movie is also full of a lot of things that are wrong...and that Spielberg clearly never lets the real history prevent him from telling the fictionalized story he wants to tell.

That's surely one of the most thorough comments on RUclips, thanks for taking the time to write it and going into more of the detail on some of the points we brought up! I agree with your point about the decision on taking the MG nest, and it’s a great point you raise about Miller’s use of the medic in the attack - I’d never thought about it like that. This is actually the one scene in the movie I think about the most. I’m not sure exactly what Spielberg is trying to say with it. Perhaps about the irrationality of war, as I mentioned in the episode. All movies are some blend of realism and style and I think this has to be one of the greatest meshes of those two things of any movie made. Thanks again for your insights! Glad you enjoyed it! Ros.

The improved graphics?!? Are all of you serious?!? There is beauty in the original graphics, not to mention the 3 most horrible graphical changes they have done... 1. The hp bar on the units are so bright and bulky, the original ones are thinner and smoother, way more better! 2. Most of the occlusion of objects and buildings get overlapped by units on the corner, making the visuals absolutely unrealistic! 3. The collapsing building graphics are, yes more realistic, but the solidity and obstacle of the falling building is absolutely inconsistent, while a gate, or a castle is still collapsing, where most of the building is still intact, the units that have destroyed that building are able to passing through it, absolutely horrible and unsustainable to see, the remastered edition is just a waste of money, The Conquerors, 2001 is the best and most stable version to play still today!!!
