What size is the square? Is it 6x6
A lot of precious time lost on inspecting, endless turning, gesturing, figuring out what to say how to say it and what you're going to do and how you're going to do it. Maybe try to have all that figured out before you shoot the video.
Excellent detailing dude.
The door should open outward, not "inward how (you) wanted it" - because battering rams against directional hinges is a standard self-defense for Keeps and castles. If it opens inward you make life easy for invaders and difficult for your chariots to stampede outwards. Realism 1. The cable-ties idea is brilliant! Thank you.
Is that Castle Naerytar on your cutting board?
No. If it resembles it, it's by pure coincidence.
Ahh I see the difference now. It was just funny that it looked like it because I am working on a Naerytar model right now. Must be all I see lol
Damn :-( you stopped making videos it seems Awesome tutorials thanks mate
The materials such as the tools ensures the quality of the finished piece, "fow show"
Thanks for the vid! Im the artist friend in my friend group and ive wanted to make dungeon tiles for our dungeons and dragons game. I have searched for a week and not known what foam to buy. Thanks for all the help!
You're welcome.
Love tea light applications.
Did you remove the paper from the foamcore before marking it ?
GmaxTube yes I removed the paper before marking the lines on the tiles.
Thanks for your reply! How did you do that ? I've tried soaking the plate in water but it bended.
And the paper didnt come off very well , may be I should use soap or some other way
GmaxTube I have only used foam core board from a dollar store and usually the paper peels off with a little effort. If you bought the foam core from another store the glue holding the paper on is stronger and doesn't peel off as easily.
I just did a spike pit trap, and man, now I regret having used toothpicks instead of skewers... Awesome result!
this is EXACTLY the idea I had for building my dungeons. I wanted tiles and walls, all interchangable to go along with my D&D wrath of ashardalon. the craftsmanship looks so good! well done.
Thank you very much.
? What game is this
Daniel OG LOC Lister It's not for any particular game. It's just a dungeon trap for a dungeon corridor.
Cool idea!
8:40 that screen effect really freaked me out. I thought I was hallucinating. Great video.
Infinite Bladez Thank you.
Good tutorial for tiles! :D
You have a factory in your house! :D
Warped Clips I need some goblins or imps to run it.
Super vid! :D
Thank you!
Nice vid!
Thank you very much.
Very good video!Good work!
Thank you very much.
I had come away with virtually the same idea using single corrugated cardboard and the foam core with 4 inch squares. For the walls I copied Black Magic's pillars with the stacked foam core and brick detail, but that takes way to long. Looking forward to your wall tutorial.
Shawn Blair Thanks for the feedback. Once I get the flooring videos done, I will begin working on the walls and provide different options for the tiles.
Nice results....looking forward to seeing where you take it...Jim
Thank you for the feedback. Many tutorials are on the way.
Sweet stuff and glad to see you back with POWER!
World of MONSTERS Thank you, my friend. Getting back into the zone.
to help thin the paints, I would suggest airbrush paint reducer, you can get a bottle for around 5 bucks at any hobby lobby, and it works with any acrylic paints. It just thins it out, and is clear so it won't effect the colors.
James Heit Thanks for the advice.
i have the stronghold builder's guide too
Yes, I bought it years ago before I even got into crafting for research into role-playing and such.
he's back!
Yes!
Good to see an update. Best of 2017 to you! Minecraft was alright, I'm waiting until they release such a game with everything at a higher par.
It's been too long. Best to you as well in 2017. The blocky feel of the game is something to get over yet I find it challenging to work with as a creative tool and game. I just wish it had a guideline story to follow along with the objectives you can achieve. I am not sure if I will play the story mode Minecraft or not.
Right, even in story mode there isn't really any guidance or.. story for that matter
Yep, and a minecraft village is a disaster from an artistic as well as a functional point of view, however, villages are generated by a program, which does not think or reason as we do. It would be nice if the villagers had side quests as well as a trading function.
Have you played any of the Elder Scrolls games?
World of MONSTERS No, however, I recently acquired a copy of Skyrim for Christmas. The only challenge is finding time to play it.
As a general rule, I am always more interested in instructional "how to" vids than I am in vids that just zoom around a view of something someone did. Not that I am *un*interested, but I don't sit around thinking, "Gee, what has Kev, or Wyloch, or Garrett, or Scotty been up to this last week/month?"
When I build things it is usually an experiment and if I feel there is a need for a tutorial, then I happily do a tutorial on a particular part of a project or the whole thing.
Very cool. If you ever go to Disneyland you will see a set of Snow White and the 7 Dwarves statues near the castle. If you look closely you will see they are all the same size. The park set them up using force perspective to make Snow White look taller. Cool vid bro.
Nice work . I'm enjoying you channel
Thank you. Glad to hear it.
Nice movie. However you should take instructions from woodprix website if you want to learn how to make it easily.
Thank you.
FANTASTIC WORK KEV!
Thank you!
Looks good all together i like the red door. So are you going to show a picture of it being used for gaming?
Thank you. I really liked how the doors turned out. Unfortunately, I am no currently gaming in a group, so in gaming pictures won't be possible. I though use this for articles or tutorials online with my website. Along with my facebook page and website I will have work in progress photos of how it came together. I am thinking of doing some gaming strategy videos in the future and this build will be a great backdrop.
i live in such a location that gaming groups are hard to come by. I can find magic players and such but my preferred games such as 15mm war games are hard to find but i still make terrain i have a tub full some good some meh. making it for 15mm is challenging because i don't get many opportunities for reference. But i enjoy terrain videos that give me ideas. thanks for the videos.
Thank you for watching. I always appreciate feedback.
What a great way to end the project, with some really cool doors! Using the zip ties for effect was ingenious, as was your choice of color! However, l still think you have one more difficult decision to make. What project to start next. :) Whatever it is, l'm looking forward to it.
Thank you. The zip ties were a gamble and from the feedback I received, it paid off. I felt the door color had to reflect the theme of the build and stand out as well. I did like how the doors turned out and they have more depth and style than my previous stronghold. If I do doors for an elvish structure in the future, they will have to be fancier in comparison. Glad you are looking forward to what is next. I am either going to do something with some figurines or something dungeon related. Thanks again.
Epic! The scale of this project is superb, and your attention to detail is incredible.
Thank you. I barely fit the keep on the foam core board. The theme of this build challenged me to incorporate even more detail than the last stronghold I built.
It's worth it. Great build!
Bill Allan Thank you!
Love the red doors Kev. I'll have to do that on a future build.
Thank you. I thought brown doors would have been lost in the overall look and I wanted to make them stand out a little. At first I tried a more true red color and realized it was too bright in contrast.
I think this piece is coming together nicely. One thing l noticed when we got a "top down" view was that the cobblestone floor looks pretty uniform in color. You might consider putting a colored wash over some of the stones to give them a little variation as well. Solid colors might make things pop a bit too much, but some red, orange, or even green washes over a few stones here or there, that would allow the darker stone color to show through, might create some interesting breaks. Painting a demonic summoning circle in the middle of the courtyard might also cause a bit of a stir when the pc's walk in as well! 😉
Thank you for the feedback. Some things do not become obvious until after more details are added. That is one reason I wanted to break up the uniform color between the runners and tower roofs and add another shade to stand out. Now that you mentioned it, the details of the courtyard have been kind of lost in the two colors. I actually thought of adding some other colors to make the stones stand out more in the courtyard and you just confirmed it. The summoning circle is a great idea, although I was thinking of making some removable pieces that I can swap out. One separate build I thought of adding was a small graveyard within the courtyard. Thanks again for the suggestions.
I'm not sure if l missed it, but what were the "slabs" made out of?
By the way they look, I'm guessing the scraps from doing the floors.
You are right.
The slabs were made from scrap pieces of foam core that were cut from the roofs and runners.
Its really coming together. I keep imagining chains at various locations hanging from the walls and a couple rope piles. Well done and be blessed in all your adventures! Frederick
Thank you. I am not sure if I will Incorporate chains and ropes in the build. Thank you for the suggestion and feedback.
Fantastic, haven't had much time to watch but the progression is awesome and I especially like the touch of the spikes.
Thank you. I keep getting ideas for more detailing from other RUclips channels. The architecture from LOTR and the Hobbit have inspired me to do more as well. The spikes seemed to me, like a cake topper as well as something to make the keep look more menacing.
Stronghold Crafter Kev Well they certainly did that, keep it up :)
The texture on the walls is amazing! I also love the attention to detail on the tower turrets.
Thank you. It's amazing how expanded polystyrene resemble stone when it is detailed and painted. I never thought I would place so much detail on the towers and walls. This project has forced me to think outside the box, compared to my first stronghold build. And there is quite more detail yet to do and that will be shared in the next video, when the time is right.
I think the skulls are much easier to see. Looking good.
Thank you. I took the suggestion of making them metallic instead of stone and I'm happy how they turned out.
Your stonework looks great. I consider your project to be among the best looking crafted castles I've seen so far in crafting vids.
Thank you. I really appreciate the compliment. I am still learning new techniques with this project and I'm glad some of the changes I have done work.
When copper is exposed to the elements, over time it it oxidizes and gets these green discolorations that form on it called patina. Basically it just makes the metal look a little more worn and weathered rather than brand new.
Thanks.
I think its looking great. Very ominous. As mentioned by BMC, l would consider painting the skulls in a metalic, copper would be my choice and then add a patina to it to age them. I would also consider adding moss to the exterior to further give it an aged appearance, as well as give you a little color contrast to break up all the brown. Weather streaking on the stone might work as well as an option to give it's look a little more doom and gloom. All in all l think you've done a pretty spectacular job with it and l've enjoyed following your progress. I look forward to seeing this to its conclusion!
Thank you. I was going for a dark theme with this build. I agree, metallic would better enhance the look of the skulls. Could you explain what a patina is? I actually thought of adding dead thorn-like vines growing up the sides of the structure to help break up the brown. I have never done weather streaking, however, I am thinking of adding another highlighting color. Thanks again for the feedback.
Looks pretty cool to me are going to highlight the skulls maybe paint gems in the eyes?
Thank you. I wanted to take a break from the usual gray stone look. I thought of highlighting the skulls, since they do tend to blend in a bit, however, I don't think gems in the eyes is going to add to theme I am going for. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hey Kev, great progress! I feel your pain on the accidental blunder, seems to happen a lot when doing buildings, especially when trying to make pieces removable. Anyway, don't think it's too bad. I would probably cut the top of those stone build outs at an angle to allow the walls to move closer, and I think it will look intentional since some of your top stone pieces already have an angle cut. As for the paint, I definitely think you need to do a lighter shade dry brush. There is a lot of detail still lost in the darkness, personally I'd probably do two stages of lightening...but it's a big piece so I get not wanting too, but dry brush is always fast. The one thing that really popped into my head though is that those skulls are so much smoother than the stone I don't think they really quite look like carved stone, to me they read as iron sculptures/decorations and I think it would be cool to really run with that idea by giving them all a coat of gun metal or some other metallic craft paint, then a very subtle dry brush of a lighter shade on the raised edges. Congrats on getting this thing to this stage!
Thanks a lot for the feedback. There is always that struggle with a new build to get to the next stage and you miss that little detail that throws everything off when it fits together. I totally agree with angle cutting the tops of the stone build outs. Thanks to my hot wire tools from the Hot Wire Foam Factory, it was an easy fix and does not look so bad with some touch up paint. Ok, the burnt umber on the black base is dark and in natural lighting it looks more like a rust color. I agree that one more lighter shade will help highlight more detail, however, I have to be careful not to go too light. Yes, dry brushing is the way to go with this. I wasn't sure about the skulls at first with the paint, so I assumed they were stone. My thought was they were added later, when the keep was taken over by the wizard. They tend to blend in too much and metallic may be the way to go as you suggested. Wrought iron will stand out and not shine, yet copper would shine a little and give some contrast. Thanks again, Overtime at the job site is a killer for crafting time and I do my best to provide updates on my twitter account, my facebook page as well as Dm Scotty's page and the Terrainiacs page as well.
Great video!! i subs to your lovely channel!**
Thank you very much. Glad to have you.
Hi! cool video! Like))
cable ties are a brilliant hinge mechanism
+TheDMGinfo Thank you. It just worked for its purpose and it kept me from having to ground the door to the base. I don't know if hot glue will be strong enough to hold the zip tie to polystyrene or cardboard though. I used Loctite Power Grab for the adhesive to mount the hinges to the foam.
You could carve some channels into the walls around the door so the doors open wider
TheDMGinfo Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into it.
