I'm annoyed that it's taken me 3 years to discover this piece of work. It has at its core a major flaw, it's about an hour too short. Beautifully done mate. I've been a Weller fan since 1978. I was hugely into the Jam and was bereft when Paul called it quits when they were at the top [which was the point of course]. But when Inroducing and then Cafe Bleu came along I understood. I never had a problem with the transition. This is great stuff thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Well done! Agree they are massively underrated. And that Confessions is a terrific album. Nothing matches the supreme excellence of Our Favorite Shop / Internationalists (US release name). In the US Paul Weller didn't have the baggage of the Jam to weigh down perceptions of TSC, but the social commentary is almost never understood in the states (see "Born in the USA") - we deny we have class distinctions. Still, the cool kids all loved Cafe Bleu and most got off the train after Favorite Shop. TSC wasn't playing by the same rules in the mid-80s, so it was hard to fit them into an MTV category. My fave songs: Homebreakers, Come to Milton Keynes, Lodgers, Paris Match, Changing of the Guard, but at least half their songs are can't-stop-until--hear-the-end-of-this. Tip for another band that didn't fit into categories, but was brilliant over a long extended period: Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

Their commercials used to say "Probably the Best Lager in the World" as there was a law in the UK where companies were not allowed to say that their product is the BEST, because there is no way to prove it and would lead to false advertising. I was at that show. A few years before I became a rock hack, I travelled from Scotland with my buddy Alex Fergusson (future founder member of Psychic TV) because we were fans of all four musicians. I have to say the production on the record is poor, perhaps because it was rushed out only weeks after the gig. There's a bootleg of outtakes, but as it's an audience recording the sound is dire. Still - a legendary event. Ayers, Cale, Nico, Eno - dubbed ACNE by the music press! Btw I'm wearing a t-shirt with the cover image as a type this.

Yeah, that's the thing, right? The Jam's last album was moving in that direction. It wasn't so much the music that changed when he jumped ship to The Style Council, but rather the attitude of an audience that didn't want to embrace change of any kind-even if it was largely in name only at first.

The Beatles will always best the greatest band of all time and this is why, When they toured the U.S no one had ever played in a stadium before they actually played the music through the PA system that created a whole new Business of making bigger amps and speakers so people could here the Beatles, when touring America's south Racial segregation was alive and well the Beatles refused to play to a segregated audience, the promoters had no choice but to change that, the Beatles played to mixed audience it was the start to the end of Racial segregation they actually helped change the fabric of society in America + The record "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band" was completely different to anything that has ever been recorded before even Mick Jager and Keith Richards who where trying to be completely different to the Beatles in everyway said they played it over and over again because it was like nothing they had ever heard before {psychedelic} and everybody else was the same it changed Music for EVER. So get in check with reality.

    • @BestFriendsGang

Insane 360 no scope, here. The Beatles, four white men from England, kicked off the idea of ending racial segregation in America. Sorry, Dr. King. Sorry, Rosa Parks, but you got to the party late. The Fab Four invented psychedelic music. Arthur Lee and Love? Jefferson Airplane? Pink Floyd? The Grateful Dead? Never heard of em. The Beatles are the reason large amps and speakers exist. Jim Marshall? Pete Townshend? Clapton? Not even part of the story. These are killer facts about The Beatles that can't be disputed. Thanks, Phil. My reality has been forever changed.

Gone but not forgotten. I first heard of The Style Council in 1984 in both FM and AM radio, the peak of their popularity in my land is around 1985 to 1987. Because of the multitude of other British bands that also made the 1980s such a goldmine for brilliant pop music, I forgot about TSC for a while and went to work and finished my college. Five years after college thats when the CD became affordable and I finally took my first TSC CD, Singular Adventures. That reawakened my nostalgia and a deep, profound admiration for the group and their music. I obtained the box set (Complete Adventures), two DVD concerts, the TSC on Film DVD, the Paul Weller/Jam 3-disk retrospective, the videography DVD, and three albums. Time is always short for me to play and enjoy these "relics" but I'm glad I took them before these materials go out of print. Style Council is very well-regarded in my land, The Philippines, unfortunate that Weller has not continued the band and its unique sound after the last album was frozen. Could've been so well ahead of their time, or they've lost heart to soldier on when record companies began to signed on nihilist, scumbag acts like Nirvana, etcetera.....

Interesting perspective. You might also consider that you could be more passionate about The Jam in reflection and project this onto the group. I'm sure there are those who would argue the opposite-that Paul was more passionate about his work in TSC, but again it's likely a case of believing what you want to in order to justify your preference. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, so long as you're aware of your own bias.

Came back to see this video and sorted by new, and wow, thats a lot of bitter haters. Probably one of those people that cried like hell when the Jam broke up and has never recovered ever since. Personally I think breakup of the Jam was a necessary evil and very much inevitable. If it had not broken up it would have been described as a zombie band, so the breakup would have cemented its legacy. Horrible words, how about this: get off while they were still peaking. Nobody knows if it would have ended like the Rolling Stones, but given the tension between the three during the gift it was bound to happen anyway. Best case scenario they would just replace one of the members. Anyway it's probably the best band in the world. The promotional adverts that advertised the band's albums used that slogan to echo out Carlsberg.
