Particle image velocimetry of a free swimming shrimp
In this video, I am showing the flow produced by a free-swimming Marsh grass shrimp (Palaemon vulgaris) during metachronal locomotion. Using bright-field particle image velocimetry (PIV), I am studying the flow produced around individual beating legs. To do so, I seed the water with microscopic particles that I can then use to compute fluid flow velocity fields. Using this data, I can then compute vorticity to highlight the presence of flow features such as vortices or shear layers forming along the bending pleopods. Using organismal studies, I provide a new framework to characterize the fundamental principles of metachronal swimming and contribute to the development of a unifying theory ...

Close up study of shrimp metachronal swimming

In this video, I am showing how shrimp utilize coordinated motions of their legs (pleopods) to produce thrust and reduce drag. Using bright-field particle image velocimetry (PIV), I am studying the flow produced around the metachronally beating legs to investigate the benefits of pleopod bending and coalescence in drag reduction. To do so, I seed the water with microscopic particles that I can ...
Studying shrimp metachronal swimming

In this video, I am showing how a free-swimming Marsh grass shrimp (Palaemon vulgaris) moves forward using metachronal locomotion. Metachronal swimming is characterized by the sequential beating of closely spaced flexible swimming legs (pleopods), phase-shifted in time. The pleopods bend nearly horizontally during the recovery stroke to enhance efficiency and reduce drag. Bending also enables t...
Fish hydrodynamics using 2D PIV

This short video pretty much summarizes all my PhD projects. Through my research, I aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of how marine organisms interact with their fluid environments for use in bio-inspired applications. I use experimental techniques integrating the study of energetics, biomechanics, and hydrodynamics to approach questions in functional morphology and fluid dynamics tha...
Heart dissection (and cardiovascular physiology)

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! In this video I am performing another dissection to thoroughly examine the external and internal anatomy of a sheep heart. The sheep heart is a good substitute to the human heart in the sense that overall, they are both structurally and functionally about the same. Additionally, using the VR headset that we usually use in our lab to provide ...

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! In this video I am performing another dissection to thoroughly examine the external and internal anatomy of a cow eye. The cow eye is a good substitute to the human eye in the sense that overall, they are both structurally and functionally about the same. I also go over some of the histology of the retina and using the dessection itself, I g...

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! This video demonstrates the reaction between carbon dioxide (exhaled) and water in the aim to explain some the mechanisms taking place in the body during respiration. This simple demonstration is an introduction to the carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer that allows the body to maintain a relatively stable and safe pH. This video is for educati...
Kidney dissection and the process of urine production

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! This video shows the dissection of a pig kidney and describes some of the physiological processes of urine production. This video is for educational use purposes only. I am not a trained health professional and I am not teaching how to perform such protocol outside a classroom through this video. This video is simply a way to show Human A&P ...

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! This video describes the protocol that we carry in this lab at USF to run a urinalysis experiment to understand what urine is and to explore the urinary system. This video is for educational use purposes only. I am not a trained health professional and I am not teaching how to perform such protocol outside a classroom through this video. Thi...
Fat emulsification by bile

Welcome back to the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! This video describes the protocol that we carry in this lab at USF to investigate how bile plays an important role in lipid digestion by emulsifying fat before it is digested by pancreatic lipase. This video is for educational use purposes only. I am not a trained health professional and I am not teaching how to perform such protocol outside...

Welcome back into the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab! This video describes the protocol that we carry in this lab at USF to detect the presence of a specific antigen. Although some protocols may do things a bit differently, here we use the protocol and the tools provided in the Bio-Rad ELISA Immuno explorer kit.
