Opposition to Musk's Vegas Loop misses the point entirely: NYC subway expansion costs $4 billion per mile. The entire 2.2 mile Vegas Loop cost $48.7 million to build. For every $1 spent per mile on the Vegas Loop, about $181 was spent per mile on the NYC subway expansion. If a NYC-style subway was built in Vegas, $50 million would fund 66 feet. Now, a subway and the Loop are entirely different things -- and that's the point. The Loop is a quick, cheap experiment to justify further investment in public transportation. It doesn't need to handle the load of an entire city. Btw, NYC's Second Avenue subway took 97 years from concept to the opening of the first phase. It cost $4.45 billion for 1.8 miles. It's unlikely the entire line will ever be finished due to exploding costs. Meanwhile, the Loop has already been approved for a 65 mile expansion.

When an extra million people arrive for a convention all the infrastructure, including the monorail get overwhelmed. Taxi lines can be 45 minutes. I was just there for CES and it was a madhouse. They already have a monorail system. During conventions, capacity gets maxed out. I was just there during CES and we would wait >30 minutes for the monorail (which goes from the Convention Center all the way to the MGM). The Taxi line at the casinos was often 45 minutes long. They need more infrastructure to handle the flood of people that come to town during conventions. The roads are packed. Traffic is terrible. The Super Bowl a few weeks after CES was also a madhouse. Business is booming in LV and this "experiment" adds an option. It's a test...and so far it's awesome so they are building more tunnels to more casinos and the airport...and it's being paid for by the casinos. Experimentation is a good thing. @@archimetropolis Las Vegas is a small city with wild temporary fluctuations in population due to casinos, conventions and sporting events. The Monorail goes from the Convention Center nearly to the end of the strip. MGM => Paris => Caesars => Harrah’s => Concentration Center => Westfate => Sahara I’m not opposed to expansion, but Taxis, Uber and the Tunnels (Loop) all help by increasing passenger volume. Options are good….and the first tunnel from the Convention Center to Resorts World has been highly successful. Future loop tunnels to the airport, downtown, Allegiant stadium, Fremont street and UNLV will be fantastic additions. The only tunnel using tax payer dollars is the one to the airport.

Imagine how many people they could move if they used trains instead of cars

Las Vegas already has a train. I was there recently during CES and it has way too crowded to get on the monorail. And lines for a Taxi were 45 minutes. These tunnels, funded by the casinos (not government) give LV additional capacity. It's awesome and mostly privately funded.

Now imagine them moving and then stopping and then moving and then stopping at every station even though only a small number of them are interested in going to any particular station. Trains have to have a lot of seats because passengers are going to be spending a lot of time there.

That pesky woke mass transportation and it's ability to move 100s of people efficiently is causing a helluva stir.
