Steam returns to the steep grades / SRV Glen Waverly Steam Shuttles
the 7/7/2024 saw Steam return to the Glen Waverly line since 2013, this being in the form of K190 and K183 top and tailing the train between Glen Waverly and Darling stations.
the day would prove not so smooth sailing as, after a issue with K183 the train would run late for the morning shuttles with an anticipation to be on time for the afternoon runs. This was not to be as other issues came up during servicing that prevented their planned on-time running.
All six shuttles still went ahead despite the late running through out the day.

I have just realised I saw this train several kms south of Maroopna on the arvo of Sat 7th of June coming back from visiting Mum on her birthday. Or did I? 🤔

I have ridden this on my pushbike on the road which follows the track. The grade is a lot less onerous AFTER bank box than before it. So unless it is a cumulative effect like clinkering of the fire it wasn't the grade alone that caused problems. If you look at the speed at Gillet's lane Ingliston you will see what I mean. The WORST of the Ingliston bank is behind the train by the time it reaches Ironbark Gully.

Compared to the old EMD's the new "SSR" class are very quiet, always nice to see clean and shiny locomotives, for some reason the second loco was at idle and not powering like the lead, it was still at idle in your second passing too. Great collection, you sure get around. Nice to see the "90" class too, unique to the Hunter coal working. 😉
