Bobwhite Quail | Sounds and Calls of Chicks and Juveniles
The Bobwhite Quail in this video were brooded outdoors. They started outside between 2 days old and 10 days old as our quail hatching wasn't consistent and chicks hatched for over a week. These are Northern Bobwhite Quail and are native to our area so we wanted them acclimated to the outdoors as soon as possible to promote a higher wild survival rate.
This video follows the quail until they're about six weeks old. For the heatsource and shelter for the first few weeks of life, we used an old doghouse igloo propped up on the sides to allow the quail chicks to run freely underneath. A heat lamp was secured inside and turned off around five weeks of age.
Woodchips were added to the brooder f...

Thanks for watching this video. Turn on Captions for more information. I need to build a home that's affordable, non-toxic, and natural. Soooo, I neeeeed more how to guides in putting quail together! Certainly when there's more than.lne male and at least 2 more dominant hens and a flighty one (males hate chaos so it seems, so flighty hens disturb the peace and seem to make m agressive). Can I eventually house my couples together? I have one well established couple, one working on their bond and one I'm gonna try to set up It would be nice to at least have their forage space mixed. I keep them separated right now.

    We hatched 3 eggs together, so had 1 male & two females for about eight weeks. One of our female recently got away, and we haven't Bern able to find her. Ever since, our boy is restless in their home, going back and forth, and he's calling like this, but constantly. Do you think it's because he misses the other female?

      Hi! I use moveable/mobile coops and move the coop once the area is manured. In this setup for winter, I add green material and dry wood chips and clean out in the spring. Adding green material and wood chips aids in the decomposition of the manure and allows the birds to have a cleaner environment. Hope that helps!

      @suzannemortimer9752 2 года назад

      What I really wanted to know was can you move the coop with the quail inside, without any escaping or getting stressed?

    • @americanprovidedgettingbac6208
      @americanprovidedgettingbac6208 2 года назад

      @@suzannemortimer9752 Yes! Move very slowly and the quail will move from the edge being pulled forward. It always helps to have a helper shoo them away from the back that is scooting. I do not lift the coop too high either. Good luck! :D

      @@ArtByKarenEHaley I've got sand down, was thinking about making false garden beds along the edges and putting some sod down. They like to eat the earwig bugs out of the sand and dirt. I'll stack up some of the yard trimmings, that's genius. I gave one of my lone males a patch of it today and he's been digging around all day looking for bugs.

    Very nice video...I just wanted to know...Can we eat eggs of white quails.? And do white quails lay similar spotted eggs as normal spotted Japanese quails do?

    • @americanprovidedgettingbac6208
      @americanprovidedgettingbac6208 2 года назад

      Yes, you can eat the eggs. The gene that can make quails lay blue eggs are usually with the white quail but just because they are white, doesn't mean they will lay blue eggs. From my understanding, the white quail are just a color variation of the Cotornix. Hope that helps!

      From my experience, the females only sound when they're stressed. I'm sure there are more reasons but that's the only one I've noticed.

    • @mood4motion

      It looks like his leg was broken. The knee joint on one of his legs is swollen and at a different angle. You can see it right around 2:48. Leg injuries or deformities aren't unusual in quail. Their legs are very fragile especially as chicks.
