    I gave this video a thumbs down as a way to constructively debate the ideas discussed in this video. I disagree with the premise of this video because the narrator of this video states that a teacher of jazz improvisation or comlosition does not necessarily need to be a t least a trained expert in teaching jazz in order to teach jazz. I disagree in order to teach jazz; onr should be qualified to do so. I have unfortunately noticed a trend over the past two decades through many dissertations and you tibe videoes on jazz piano pedagogy that promote this questionable premise. It woukd be analogous to a pilot learning how to fly from an unlucesened pilot thst is really not qualified to teach a cadet at a pilot training school. I do like the universal teaching methodology for all subjects (nit just jazz) called the scaffolding teaching methodology however the example used in this vudeo was not a good one. In the 1970's 80's Jazz oedagogy was better premised wherevy one would assume a classical piano teacher with no jazz training to accept the fact thhat if a student wants to learn jazz then the classical teacher would refercthe student to a aualified jazz teacher. Today we see this trend move in the opposite direction whete the average classical piano teacher mistskingly wastes a student's time and momey on giving jazz lessons withiut being wualified to do so. The end result is that the students then falsely believes they are learning how to play jazz and worse never really lnow what jazz is. For example, , in the 70's and 80's and 90's the historical genres throughout jazz hustory itself were viewed as all related like the brakches on a tree-the tree of Jazz as in the way Duke Ellington described however today's jazz pedagoidues at typic university level teachbthe opppsite which is thst Jazz music is hard to define conprising a variety of genres that come and go all not related like the branches of a tree are related to a common trunk.

      To teach jazz effectively, teachers need to be able to play jazz themselves AND also know how to teach. If either of those things is missing, then it's likely to be ineffective or fail. Thanks for your very detailed thoughts. However, I'm confused: I made the video and have re-watched it quite a few times, and I just can't see where you heard me say that "a teacher of jazz improvisation or comlosition does not necessarily need to be a t least a trained expert in teaching jazz"? I don't say that, and that is definitely not "the premise of this video". The video goes through four important teaching techniques: modelling, scaffolding, semantic waves, and a realtisitc teaching/learning cycle. It's a video about teaching techniques aimed at people teaching jazz, many of whom have not had the opportunity for training in pedagogy. I DO acknowledge in the video that sometimes band teachers or others might find themselves in a situation where they are asked to teach something like an instrument they don't play. Instrumental teachers in small rural communities might be an example. But I suggest some ways around that. It's not ideal, but it can be the reality of teaching for some people. One of the workarounds I suggest is for the teacher to learn ahead of the student what they are trying to teach. Your critique of my example of scaffolding has nothing to do with what's in the video. The example I use is exactly what the technique of scaffolding means in education. What you say about classically trained piano teachers referring jazz students to experts has nothing at all to do with what scaffolding is. If anything, that's related to modelling and expertise. The explanation of scaffolding is at 3:44 in the video. Thans for watching and taking time to comment!

    This is really a story about context - jazz students, teachers, and players need the right musical tools for the job at hand. It also debunks one of the galaxies-worth of jazz myths often used to make a point, but based on something fabricated in the retelling.

    This video deals with Realistic Feedback, Planning, and Pacing. Feedback, especially, is so important and often poorly handled in jazz teaching for spurious, albeit possibly well-meaning, reasons. In an area where "success" or "improvement" aren't usually obvious to students, helpful feedback from a teacher is vital. To avoid doing this, verges on abusive and dishonest. For example, a tennis player knows immediately whether or not their serve lands accurately where they aimed. Even without teacher intervention, that feedback is obvious and helpful. But in jazz, how can someone not already steped in the music know whether a line or solo they just played was effective, in style, in time, or whatever? It needs an expert eye/ear to see/hear. Planning and good pacing are just fundamentals of good teaching. Here's a great recent video by RUclips channel @Veritasium on the steps needed for expertise, beyond the "10,000" hours thing. It includes the importance of feedback, plus lots more: ruclips.net/video/5eW6Eagr9XA/видео.htmlsi=rioYRtpp498qHD2J

    When you want to play any chord, do you play the diminished arpeggio half step below the chord before getting to the chord? Pls i need more clarity on this cause I'm confused.

    • @TeachingJazz
      @TeachingJazz Месяц назад

      You can do that, but that's not really what this video is specifically about. Here it is more that 1. the V in a II-V is often altered 2. One very common alteration is 7(b9) , eg F7(b9) 3. If you play a 7(b9) arpeggio but omit the root note, you are left with a dim7 arpeggio. 4. This is useful, sounds good, helpful to know, and a very common sound However, as you suggest, people often do lead into any chord with a dim7 a half step below. In a way, it is the same thing as I outline in the video and definitely is a sound you hear.
