12-12-8-8-8 Offset Doghouse (Charleston, SC)

Five section signal, with separate 12-12 inch (300-300 mm) indications for the arrows, and a 8-8-8 inch (200-200-200 mm) configuration for the circular indications in Charleston, SC at the intersection of Meeting and Calhoun Sts.
I believe new shared signal PPLTs in the area now use normal 12-inch indications for all of the indications.

(2023) FYA Right Turn Signal - Yellow trap? FYA LPI - Weymouth, MA
I can understand needing a stop for dual left turn lanes, but I still do not understand why Maryland prohibits flashing yellow arrow throughout the state.
The intersection farther down in this video also has FRA (time of day based) PPLTs, which replaced a shared doghouse setup in the late 2010s. I think DE allows them in their State MUTCD, but like NJ, it's rarely used if at all.
This is not a standard Maryland DOT practice. Only certain places (Baltimore County and Baltimore City) use this setup.
Interesting to know, I've only been within Baltimore County and the City of Baltimore (basketball games at UMBC and Towson) in all of my Maryland visits so far, so wasn't aware of this.
Good stuff! This setup really should be the norm for B4 partial cloverleafs.
Especially in this case where visibility is good, it allows for simple two phase operation here. Not sure how many more examples of these exist in the State of Maryland asides from the two I know of.
Yep, I know that intersection all too well! Sometimes it's a little annoying with the pedestrian phase occurring every cycle, compared to a few other intersections here having that phase triggered by a pushbutton.
Neat!
There used to be another one with a similar configuration in Merrimack on the western terminus of Industrial Dr, but when NHDOT retro-reflectived the intersection, they replaced the minor street signals with ones typically used for split phasing.
I do like the variable No Turn on Red restriction. Great camera quality too!
Thanks! I'm also going to have to do a 1080p60 test too with my previous camera, which was a Sony ILCE-6000 I've been using for years to see which one has the better quality. As for the variable NTOR, I'm not sure if I heard anything about this installation as I kinda saw this by surprise passing by. That whole intersection is timed very poorly on the Alewife Brook Pkwy side, so hoping they actually do something about this bottleneck as part of the Alewife Sta rehabilitation as well as make it better for peds and cyclists navigationally.
Is the controller a large controller on a foundation or mounted on one of the signal poles?
I think the controller and cabinet is pedestal mounted
Looks like it was a regular operating signal at one point, and possibly still can be used as a regular signal.
What are your thoughts on lead/lag of FYA? Good or bad?
I like lead/lag on FYA - one's coming to my hometown later this year (as part of a traffic signal replacement project), will be interested to see how drivers react to the new setup!
Totally awesome traffic lights
Update 2024-07-29: Project Plans of the Intersection, dated 1987, go to page 7 for the original phasing - mdotapps.maine.gov/VaultPlans/6097_m-1510(2)_m-1532(1)_m-1540(2)_f-038-1(31)_f-038-1(30).pdf
Why are people going through the red?
My guess is because people don't see the signal, especially since it's mostly flashing green at rest unless a pedestrian presses the button. People also run the older red+yellow signals as well too, though both are starting to be phased out with more modern signals.
Very cool!
Sure indeed, though most of these are starting to be phased out in favour of modern signal phasing. I actually caught this one by surprised on an unrelated visit a few weeks ago, so I had to actually see it in person when I had the time!
As of 2024-07-11, No Turn on Red signs have been installed on both Boylston St and Dartmouth Street approaches by the City of Boston. ibb.co/6nXc7T6 ibb.co/pnr4jKW
Legally, Maine actually restricts right turn on red arrow. So even without the sign, it would still be a violation.
THEY CAN BE UNTOUCHABLE? cant do this with the buttons here back in vegas, probably..
Weird...usually the flash is used for the phase right before the stop signal appears, and it should be used on the stop template instead of the walk template
Yeah I was surprised when I saw that when taking a look at this signal. This is a 30+ year old controller so I’m not sure what features it was programmed with. I think this signal may be slated for removal in the long run with the upcoming downtown revitalisation.
Sad to see that Sanford is becoming modernized. There was a time when life was simpler.
13 of the 14 signals in Sanford are currently being replaced by MaineDOT as part of replacing 210 signals statewide for their BUILD GRANT… some of the controllers I’m told are upwards of thirty years old at this point. This signal in this video is not being replaced by the DOT project.
Me too thanks.
I was hoping I'd eventually see a video about the traffic signals at this intersection on RUclips. Nice job!
Interesting they did not go with a "HAWK"-style hybrid beacon, like outside the Presidents Place high-rise (that was the first such hybrid beacon setup I ever used).
Now that's kinda odd 0:03
Wow, I do not like that at all, haha! Should *at least* have a “Left Turn Signal” sign below it. But obviously, they need to use arrow indications!
Yeah I think this might have been a contractor mistake of putting the wrong signal and/or lenses in. IIRC, should just be a simple fix of replacing the lenses or LED modules. The old signal had all left turn arrows BTW.
That has to be one of the last remaining red-light Barlo strobes in NH! Wow
I want to say there are very few around the Nashua, Manchester or Concord areas too, but I’m not entirely sure. Manchester or Nashua might be a better bet since a few of their signals look older, Concord has replaced a lot of signals with new equipment last time I went in 2022.
I live in Manchester and have yet to see one here. Within the past 5-6 years, it seems like they’ve cleaned up the remaining ancient equipment. I’ve never seen it active to confirm, but I suspect the fire station on Mast Road in Goffstown has one though. It has an obvious ring of separate LEDs around the red
@@hawktheengineer actually if i recall correctly, there’s a similar configuration with the left turn signal being all circular in Hudson at Derry Rd, Library St and Highland St, with a 3M signal on SB Derry Rd. Runs independently with its own phase… going to have to tape that soon next time I’m in Nashua.
@@hawktheengineer At least in Dover/Portsmouth so far, there’s been a push to upgrade the signal controllers to the latest ATC standard (on non-NHDOT maintained signals) which also includes replacing other equipment and putting those yellow retro reflective strips on the signal backplates too.
@@FwyDriver It’s been a while since I’ve been down in the Hudson area, but I do recall seeing what you described. Hopefully still alive and well.
That tick sound?
I was trying to put my tripod in a good position to capture as much as possible, and unfortunately it ended up so close to the APS button…
Needs NTOR. I’ll reach out and see if any can be installed
I put a 311 request too a few days ago before I posted this too, hopefully the signs get installed soon!
No Turn on Red signs have been installed on both approaches, see pinned comment
Nice setup! Wish it was still a flashing green though! 🙂
I've seen cars make a right on red when it said "No turn on red!".
Why Do We Need Right Turn Singal Arrows In Right Side Driving Countries Like The United States 🇺🇸 China 🇨🇳 And Canada 🇨🇦 Right Turn Signals Should Be Used For Left Side Driving Countries Like Australia 🇦🇺 New Zealand 🇳🇿 And Japan 🇯🇵
To restrict right turn movements when necessary independent of the through movement.
The Green and Yellow are both incandescent.
I just noticed that the Pedestrian signals do not have countdowns. It's just the Hand and the Man
That's a Doghouse signal
Doghouse it is! It was just unusual that it was operating as a seperate signal in fully protected mode rather than in protected-permissive mode (shared or Dallas phased).
yep, I call these "Protected Doghouses".
The intersection was also cool because there is a worded pedestrian signal in the Cross street
There was one in Tom's river, Except it was an 8 inch signal.
One problem is that the walk signal is dead and the numbers are not working. Another problem is that the northbound crossing shows the number 99 for the entire phase and goes to 0 once DW expires.
Flashing yellow has always meant caution, but never before did it mean yield. For example, a classic four-way intersection might have a flashing yellow ball for traffic on the primary road, combined with a flashing red ball for the cross traffic. The new flashing yellow arrows are not intuitive. Knowing the old rules, a driver might infer they should use caution turning left, but not that they need to yield to conflicting traffic. Of course, the real meaning of the flashing yellow arrow is no different than a solid green ball, a status which has been around since signals were introduced and which comes with the meaning of yield when turning left built-in. I realize the new flashing yellow arrows are intended to emphasize that, but I really think they will cause more problems than they solve.
Studies show the opposite of what you believe
Wrong. Flashing yellow always meant proceed with caution, but does not require a stop.
@ Proceed with caution, no requirement to stop - but never a requirement to yield - until now.
@@ElmerCat Left turn on flashing yellow ball is required to yield to oncoming traffic, so flashing yellow left arrow is the same.
Yikes
Yeah, this isn't good. Especially with the actual yellow trap this is causing. It's ironic because the FYA is supposed to eliminate that. A lead lag setup could work here but with protected only movements due to the geometry of this intersection.
The FYA only eliminates yellow trap if they are installed and phased correctly. Since the opposing traffic is a single lane approach, a W25-1/2 sign or a(n) FYA 5-section signal with the correct overlaps should be installed on that approach. Split phasing will also work as well, though I'm not too familiar with how this intersection performs in the rush hours. Fully protected lead lag may not work given that the other approach is only a single lane as well.
@@FwyDriver yeah that makes a lot of sense. A 5 section FYA seems to make sense!
Cool!
I really don’t like that! Maybe some double lefts can work okay with permissive phasing, but there just seems to be too much going on here for it to be safe. Especially with oncoming drivers trying to make left-turns in between cars waiting for gaps at the dual left.
Yeah, I was suprised to see an actual double permissive left turn close to where I live (especially in MA), as 99% of the time those kind of movements are set to fully protected or split phased. The opposing traffic is yellow trapped however, opposing signals are just circular green. At least there is little to no pedestrian conflict here as it's exclusive ped. But yeah, too many things happening with a wide intersection to make it safe.
@@FwyDriverDo they at least have a “Oncoming Traffic May Have Extended Green” sign for the yellow-trapped approach? If not, that’s a MUTCD violation.
I was looking at this intersection on street view, and it looks like it used to run split phase. Does the oncoming “circular green” approach have a dedicated left-turn lane? If it does, they could run it “lead/lag” as @TheTrafficTech suggested.
So, I went back to look at this intersection yesterday for a second time just to look at some other attributes. The oncoming traffic is a single lane approach and no, it does not have a W25-1/2 sign on the yellow trapped approach. Exclusive pedestiran phase as well.
I filmed this last year! Such an odd setup!
I thought I recongised that intersection en route to Peabody/Salem the other day! It was the fact the left turn signal were all circular that caught me off guard initially.
Nice ! Is it NTOR ?
I assume this is temporary. I bet it’s meant to be a FYA signal for some strange conflict reason
Since the approach is listed as a “straight” and not a “right” movement, I’d assume it’s automatically one even with no NTOR sign. Since the old “right” turn signals were both a doghouse and an inline-5, I’d assume there may be a phase where the FYA would flash in the future.
@@FwyDriver but I can’t tell, is that sign hidden by the nearside signal a NTOR ?
There are two R3-5 (Left Turn Only) signs and one R3-5a (Straight Only) signs on the mast arm.
@@FwyDriverdisappointing
can you PLEEEEASE film the APS there? I DID NOT EVER IN MY LIFE HEARD A 38 SECOND COUNTDOWN BEFORE and Its to far away from my house
Unfortunately, I'm even farther away from this location - I only taped this signal since I was down in Woodbridge for basketball games at the time (Rutgers and NJIT). My apologies!
WTF??!! YOU LIVE IN NY OR SMTH?
Maryland SHA had the audacity to ban flashing yellow arrow in the state just because they pioneered the flashing red arrow with Delaware. I find no engineering basis for that.
Intersting how their FRAs permissive phase (overlap) is not tied to the opposing thru green like FYA to prevent yellow trap, though I only saw three at the time of this video (this one, one near either Baltimore or UMBC, and another one near BWI). I'm not familiar with how FRA works though I'd imagine modern installations would be similar to FYA and their overlaps.
Yes, the first two are yellow traps. It should clear from FYA to red arrow before a green right turn overlap. Trotter is OK though.
