I Raced the 2024 Olympic Peloton... sort of

Could I make it in time?

I'm sure some of the foreign guys have no idea what we're saying on audio during group races 🤣My best tactic up the Alp is to find a power I can keep even for the duration. When I first started doing it the first few segments would be at 250w and by segment 10 they were going down fast. I know if I go above 220 early on, even though I feel good, I won't be able to maintain it so I'm fixated on that constant 220 number and keeping it even. Cheers for sharing

    Plays? Isn’t it just a fitness thing, I don’t think it’s a game. I mean there are powerups and stuff but that’s about the extent of it, and from what I’ve heard using those is fairly strategic for the top racers…

    • @AdamRussellCycling
      @AdamRussellCycling 5 месяцев назад

      I'd definitely classify it as a game, although you're right that it is first and foremost a fitness app, that doesn't mean that it can't be gamified and be 2 things. Power ups, experience points, gear unlocks, currency, levelling up, progression, challenges, achievements, and seasonal content are just some things that zwift shares with 'traditional' games

  • @aaronpower8741
    @aaronpower8741 5 месяцев назад

    Nice to see a professionals opinion of the game design. I've been on Zwift for years. My son is a more traditional gamer and he is always criticising the relatively low-res graphics. For me, the graphics are good enough to be immersive, while not requiring a high-end gaming rig to be playable. As for the elevation profile - it works OK for significant hills, but for relatively flat courses it gives you no useful information for a short incline. Agreed. But even worse from my point of view is that the profile is dependent on the section of road you are on, not the course you are doing. A given section of road could be shared between multiple courses, but when you are point "X", the profile is always the same, regardless of chosen course. For example, if you ride through the desert town and up the following hill, the profile will assume you are going up the KOM, regardless if you have picked the Titan's Grove course, or Downtown. It is only when the bike turns off that route that the elevation profile will update. I could be wrong, but I suspect the game designers made some sort of fundamental design decision in the early days and now it's difficult to change. But it is one thing that I find really annoying. If I'm riding Titan's Grove, I'd like to see the whole ride profile from the very start. Having said that, I do about 200km a week on Zwift, so it's not enough to turn me off the game 😄 Thanks for your video.

    • @AdamRussellCycling
      @AdamRussellCycling 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your comment! I agree that the graphics aren't much but personally graphics have never been that important to me. Breath of the Wild is the best game I've played in 20 years and that's basically running on an android tablet! The elevation profile won't be an insignificant thing to change I wouldn't have thought, but equally I'd be surprised if it's really that much work to decouple it from existing systems (like how it applies to all routes on the road, rather than the route selected). Hopefully there's an update at some point that makes it usable!

    Save your drops. Do not buy everything as you go. Your garage gets cluttered with no way to sort it. Bike choice only really matter when riding solo. The Felt AR at level 21 is one of the fastest bikes in the game. The Madone is another good one at level 20 in game unlock. The ENVE 7.8 wheels are great wheels. The biggest part of Zwift "bike" speed is the draft. Don't get hung up on buying stuff. It just gets messy in the garage.

    You can get a good elevation profile but it requires an add on program called Sauce. It allows you to customize the UI and gives you many in race analytics for you any of the riders around you.

    Ramp test is a awful way to test your FTP. It’s always inflated and in my opinion it’s not a figure I can sustain for 40 mins let alone a hour. 20 min FTP test is a lot more accurate imo

      I've only very recently started riding with power, but I plan on doing a 20 min test as I get more used to pacing efforts to a target wattage. I think for beginners the ramp test is very good to quickly get even just a rough indicator of FTP though

      @@AdamRussellCycling I’ve been using power for a few years now and having a accurate power zone reading is really important. Unfortunately many and including myself think that a ramp test reading is exaggerated. But don’t take my word for it, in a weeks time or so take a FTP test and see for yourself. But even a ramp test is better than nothing so all good

      FTP is a false metric it is nice to know but not really proving anything- HR and power to workout drift is a much better metric

      No problem, let me know if you want anymore pointers? Are you just testing as a benchmark or you have an event in mind? Or just to smash your mates

    Nice work! I just got 243 on the 20 minute test (at 71kg). Maybe I'll try the ramp test next week... with a hangover too?... 🤣

      Pretty sure a hangover gives you bonus watts, or maybe it was reduces watts... I dunno, I'm not a sports scientist😅

  • @jonnyt8154

    You should wear a HR strap to as HR is important to consider as well as watts. If in a future test you can see any improvement even if your power is the same

    • @AdamRussellCycling

      I have an HR strap now, bought one after doing this ramp test so will be able to track that in future too!

      How would a change in heart rate show any change in fitness in a maximal test?

    • @jonnyt8154
      @jonnyt8154 5 месяцев назад

      By using a HR monitor then you can see if you are fitter and more efficient at a given power and if it has improved A maximum test over 1 minute ramps does really show you anything as at the top it is more about will power and you can push further than you really could riding. If you use HR you can see what the % of your max HR you hit Example You hit 330 watts in the test You max HR is 190 At 330w you only hit 160HR Meaning you can work out what training you need to hit the zone 5 you didn’t hit

    Smart to select the everest challenge right away. That's how you eventually get the Tron bike. Zwift has a great community and is very unique for a game. Once you ride more, the map will become much more familliar. As for bikes to save for, Zwift Insider has done a lot of testing on in game bikes to show the best bikes at each level, so definitely give them a google search. Overall though, the gains are marginal once you get to about level 17. Then it becomes more about tactics if you decide to get into the racing scene. Hope you enjoy learning the ropes!

    Tron, or Zwift concept bike, cannot be purchased with drops. You have to complete the Everest Challenge and then keep climbing more to hit the additional goal. It takes months of climbing to complete it as you have to climb a total of 50,000m which is 164,042ft. Also, look up the keyboard shortcuts as they are very useful. If you hit H, it hides to HUD. If you hit G, it brings up a graph of your last 10 minutes of power/heartrate at the bottom of the screen. Arrow keys for turning at intersections/turning around and spacebar to use the powerup. Number keys to change the camera angle. Zwift Insider is the best place for good info on Zwift.
