Norwegian bass-baryton Bjørn Mathias Tollefsen (15) performs Angel's "La serenata" by Braga
15 year old Norwegian bass-baryton Bjørn Mathias Tollefsen delivered this emotional version of Angel's "La serenata" by Gaetano Braga on an intimate concert in the "Kronen gård" traditional guest house in Sandnes, Norway on January 27th 2024, leaving the women in the audience in tears and swept off their feet. Violin and piano on playback by Augustinas and Skirmante Monteilhet.
This is the touching story about a little girl who hears an angel sing to her, and is as moving and beautiful as it was when Braga composed it nearly 200 years ago. 🤎

      Thank you Sir for your interest and thank you for asking. This time this was a bit difficult to do so, as the music was by playback only, which we recorded in a studio some months earlier. Only Bjørn Mathias was there this time, but the violin tunes were played previously by Augustinas. They will however continue their music cooperation also after the summer holidays, so I am sure that we can accommodate this request at some other time. I'll make sure to ask about the hat too. 🙂

Yes, this was performed inside an old church with stone walls, and as such, the accustics could be a bit much to hear some of the details in his voice production. But performing inside a church has its own characteristics and moods. Mathias ! Congratulations on such a successful performance. You gave a very nice concert - recital. You look great. Your singing is captivating and touching. You have huge potential. Keep shaping it, because as it continues to grow, it will become more and more pure and beautiful in color. You are in a great register - scale, this is a great advantage for you. Your voice already captivates with its beautiful deep timbre, it is clear and well articulated. You capture the mood and character of the song perfectly. You reach for a diverse repertoire😍👏👍🎶🎤🎼🎹 . Music is a strict field. Many musicians were scientists - physicists, mathematicians, astronauts... Because music comprehensively develops human abilities, personality and sensitivity. We understand what is hidden in the work and its strict structure, we understand the intentions of the Creators. So the adventure with music is great, regardless of which path we choose in the future... - but we can reconcile one with the other... Despite the work we put in, we still have more time than others, because we achieve our goal easier and faster... Mathias! Performing for the elder is an important musical mission, as they are normally facing many challenging days filled with both deteriorating health and lonelyness, and on this particular care centre, many of the patients were struggling with dementia challenges. And perhaps particularly on days of celebrations like this one. ❤ You are very right, and this is a fascinating topic, for there is reasearch now verifying that practising and studying music develops cognitive skills and intelligent capacity, especially in early age. I see the same in Mathias, who is also doing very well at school. So now science can actually explain why many musicians also suceed in many other intelligence demanding professions. 🙂

    Mathias ! Another applause for your courage :) 👏👍 It's good that you are trying to take the piano path. This is welcomed by everyone . However, remember to develop proper piano playing habits from the beginning. It is then difficult to get rid of the wrong ones, it may be very difficult or even impossible. First: - Seatings. We sit in a chair - not very deep, with our buttocks tucked into it. We sit on a chair, not with the whole butt, but up to the hip joints. The chair moves back so that your knees are at the level of the front strip of the piano keyboard. The pianist then has the freedom to move left and right and reaches for the lowest and highest keys of the keyboard. Relaxed , not stiff. Secondly: - placing your hands on the keyboard. Casual... as if they were thrown at the keyboard with their hands outstretched. Then the hand and fingers lie naturally, freely, slightly rounded and touch the keys with their fingertips. Third: Practice patiently so that your fingers hit the keys from above like hammers, also slightly rounded - the fingertips, especially the fourth and fifth fingers, attack the key slightly rounded - and not sideways and straight!!! Just like with you, because you won't be able to unlearn it later. Then the pianist will never achieve the right technique and a properly selected, catchy sound. The posture should be relaxed, upright, without excessive bending over the keyboard. This silhouette is characteristic of every pianist, from the youngest to the oldest. It's a bit troublesome at first, but we quickly get used to it and develop this habit permanently, forever, and we see how convenient and valuable it is. ROY started just like you , but he followed these tips and now he is a great pianist - not just a vocalist. Examples : ruclips.net/video/mnDAZ8i0A8U/видео.html - incorrect ruclips.net/video/KL0dGP6p7qk/видео.html - incorrect ruclips.net/video/KQXT8BaL5q4/видео.html - good As a singer, you should try piano playing technique. " FORTEPIAN " is a must-have for every musician. But we learn correctly, without hitting the side side , the straight fifth finger, because over time it will even get distorted and deformed half, and this cannot be repaired... :D :D :) Mathias :) don't take it literally , I don't want you to get discouraged, because I appreciate your willingness and commitment. Regards and good luck 😃❤👏🎼🎹🎶🎤🐯🐬 .... , Piotr . Finally, he gives examples of proper posture and playing by pianists - links: 1. ruclips.net/video/6ZtypnrzCN0/видео.html 2. ruclips.net/video/2UOS4fEi7rg/видео.html 3. ruclips.net/video/0anbEY3XOzg/видео.html 4. ruclips.net/video/Ybq6Ea79nZ4/видео.html

      Thank you for all the good advise Piotr, highly appreciated and very useful indeed. Mathias will look at this. Although, piano is merely a side instrument, something fun to do alongside all the technical vocal training, and he does not have the time to practice this as much as his piano teacher thinks he should. But you are certainly correct of course, it is important to get the technical basis right regardless, in order to master this wonderful instrument better. 🙂

    • @japiat1520
      @japiat1520 3 месяца назад

      Mathias ! 😃 I would really like you not to think that these were words of criticism - absolutely not! You have mastered this instrument well, but you make mistakes that you need to work on. For convenience, I use Google Translate and I have noticed that it slightly changes the meaning of the statement, or even vice versa. You have to guess what I mean :D, just like in the previous one... Mathias, I wanted to show you - tell you how to sit properly at the piano. The piano itself requires it and doesn't like it any other way. Respect him if that's what he wants :D. We sit on the edge of the chair, not with our entire butt, but somewhere up to our hip joints. You will feel it yourself, because it is most convenient. Then your entire torso can move freely left, right, from the lowest to the highest notes and you are not stiff. Sitting with your entire ass on a chair, with your knees deep under the keyboard - this is a sight that disqualifies a pianist. This way you can only play in taverns and... The knees are slightly apart and are at the level of the piano keyboard bar. I'm surprised that no one noticed it and didn't let you do it... no offense :) please... And the second thing is the correct positioning of your hand on the keyboard. just normally - directly above the keyboard. We do not bend our arms with the fifth finger straight when pressing a key, because it is easier for you... We keep our hand normally straight above the keyboard and only the fifth, slightly rounded finger presses the key on the a pillow and works. You are already an adult, it's not a problem... I especially see it in your left hand when you accompany: - one two three, - one two three, - one two three, - this ONCE is terrible - because you twist your hand when hitting with fifth straight finger sideways, not with a pillow :(. Please don't be discouraged. It's great! It's great that you play the piano, avoid mistakes because it's hard to get rid of them. You don't have to be a pianist, just practice for yourself half an hour a day. As a singer with a beautiful voice, the ability to play the piano will come in handy - it's something more, it adds prestige. I'm sorry that I'm writing about it so extensively, but I care about you because you are very ambitious and hard-working and I want you to know how things should be... You are an adult, you understand everything best ❤🎶🎤🎼🎹👍👏, best regards and good luck... Piotr

    We once had a journalist here in Australia called Wilfred Thomas who was a bass barytone and decided to study opera in England in the days before aeroplane flights and when you had to stop at Suez in Egypt and if you had enough time you could visit the famous ancient sites. This is when the famous tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun had been discovered in the Valley of the Kings -he actually sang the invocation to Isis and Osiris from the "Magic Flute" in the very tomb of Tutankhamun. Must have been amazing.

      Thank you so much Bill. The lower range takes a lot of practice, and does also provide the base for the higher range as well. Hopefully, and expectedly, the voice will be even more powerful when he grows older, especially in the lower range. 🙂

      @@sveintollefsen1448 In his lower bass Bjørn sounds a bit strained. Is it possible to "elevate" (my term, sorry) that a bit. He has a powerful bass.

      @@keltus_warrior6491 Thank you for very good comments. We agree, the lower bass interval is still "weak" and struggling to get through the orchestra. It takes a lot of technical training to perfectionate this, which he is working on every day, but in addition to that, this is also actually a consequence of the fact that he is not fully grown yet. As he gets older, this will also help "unstraining" his voice. ☺

    Greetings, I am from Mauritius island, studying in Opera Germany in a music conservatoire; Hochschule für Musik. Last year I was in the opera The Magic Flute, and played the role Sarastra. I must say that at your age, I was not capable of doing what you did. Today, I am quite pleased with my work. With time, one learns and improves. I am sure you will grow up into a wonderful singer as well. My advise is to make reference to old classical singers. (Avoid the modern ones. Please be careful) Some of the singers I would recommend to you are; Ezio Pinza (for technique - watch his vibrato for O isis und Osiris), Marcel Journet (for placement), and Boris Christoff (for style/interpretation). Wish you all the best.

      Dear Avishing, thank you so very much for your kind comments and very good advise. Mathias's song teacher, also a former professional Bel Canto opera singer, agrees very much to the names you suggested, and Mathias will be studying them carefully. Thank you again. PS. We looked at your Sarastro performance from last year, it was fantastic! (although this was the first time we hear this in the French language). 😍👏👏

    Mathias 😍, you reach for a very ambitious repertoire, your national composer Grig. He is an outstanding composer, also called the Chopin of the North. "Songs" is his favorite cykl . You performed this song wonderfully. An increasingly beautiful voice, more and more colorful, deep and mature. Pure in terms of intonation, articulation and emission. The voice is well supported and mounted on the resonators and the cage on the diaphragm. Perfect diction. As usual, he was very nice with a radiant smile and loved music and singing. Bravo, congratulations and thank you for the work you put into it and for your perseverance👏💯🎶🎤🎼🎹👏❤🐯🐬. Best regards to You and your Dad......Piotr
